And the Joker, the role didn't overtake batmans role in the movie but Ledgers portray of the Joker kind of took The Dark Knight to that gold standard. if Ledger didn't give that epic performance it probably wouldnt be that high but very close to the top non the less

Infinity War and TDK are two completely different movies Though both being well thought out. One is a Space adventure and one is a dark thriller with earth based rules and logic If he likes it its based on opinion. Both have great Villains (Joker's better) Both are revolutionary. Eh. That’s debatable. The Dark Knight rises was kind of a massive letdown. He also directed that overhyped piece of shit Dunkirk. Heath Ledger is the one who drove this movie. Films with a Light/Dark dichotomy are only as good as their antagonist, and TDK would not have been the same without him, and I’m sure that it wouldn’t have been as well received.

Cheers for the respect I put The Wolverine on there for three reasons # 1) My personal fondness for it (Especially in comparison to the Origin story) I actually liked Deadpool more as a film, but Deadpool unfortunately will be dated sooner than The Wolverine, with the Nagasaki scene - it makes it a period piece # 2) I put it above Predator 2 and Underworld because I LOVE Underworld as a WHOLE series - individual movies can be trying with lack of exposition, as a whole, like the entire series of Game of Thrones and Gravity Falls - the films united are brilliant more so than individual films - where as THE Wolverine was a single story arc with a PROVOCATIVE story ending # 3) the tone and setting - the uncut R rated version - the violence is intense but not gratuitous Actually now I think about it - X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST IS THE BETTER MOVIE! There are so much plotholes with this movies. 4 big ones. 1) Why did Batman take blame for Dent's/Two-Face's crimes? Obviously there is no clear evidence that Dent killed anyone or they couldn't blame Batman, so why not just leave Dent's death and death of 5 people he killed as unsolved murders? It wouldn't be the first unsolved crime in Gotham City. 2) Why would police give Joker a phone in prison (which he used to blow up that prison)? Joker's a terrorist, don't give him anything. 3) Why would people on 2 boats choose to not detonate? Since they cannot possibly know that Batman (or police) is coming to their rescue, there is no way to save other ship, either they will blow it up or Joker will. Since you cannot save other ship, why not destroy it to save your own ship? 500 dead people is better than 1000 (if those 500 couldn't be saved anyway). 4) Cops demanded Batman to surrender, so Joker would stop killing cops. When Dent surrendered as false Batman, they needed to transfer him to county jail. During that transfer, Joker killed more than 50 cops.

Answering your question which movie has topped "The Dark Knight". None. It IS the gold standard. It's elemental; it cannot be broken down any further by conventional means. And Ledger's portrayal will be studied by movie makers and actors for decades to come. Batman and Joker are two sides of the same coin. The trick was writing a story that would be compelling enough to see who was going to break first.

Not only did the antagonist obviously win, but we could even go to the extent saying The Joker was the protagonist. He exposed the corruption in Gotham, going after people like Harvey and Rachel, with their respective views on Gotham. Very rarely would he kill “innocents” mainly going after mob bosses. He should us that Batman’s moral code was convoluted, and that good like him could be corruptible, and he was right. By the end, Batman did “kill” those five cops that he took the blame off Two-Face. Even Gordon was technically corrupt according to contemporary society’s misconstrued moral code, because he worked with Batman, a vigilante, a criminal, a Dark Knight.

Actually, a friend of mine divulged this: the whole narrative is an upside-down to all other superhero movies. Bruce Wayne is an isolated billionaire, living in his castle, dark, reflective, alone. MyNameIsDrope The only movies you listed that are better than tdk are the godfather, godfather 2, and goodfellas. The departed was great, but not that great. The wolf of wall street is one of my favorite movies, but it's just 3 whole hours of partying, sex, and hardcore drug usage. It's a very fun movie, but that's about it. Taxi driver was great for it's time, but the subject matter is outdated. It's still a top 100 all time great imo. No country for old men is a masterpiece,but it does have pacing issues. Casino is also one of my favorites, but i felt it was just mid level Scorsese. It's not on the same level as goodfellas. I personally think that tdk is, though it's not better. I didn't really care much about silence of the lambs. I still need to see raging bull though. The dark knight is one of the greatest movies of all time, imo the best of the 21st century.

eh I feel like BB was more of a world-building film. It set the tone, established characters/setting, etc. And I'd say the connection the villain has to Bruce is pretty interesting, and the plot is well structured. However, TDK is so much better on a thematic level and the villain is so much more compelling because of the moral battles he has with Batman and Ledger's overall excellent performance. In this one, Nolan's established his universe, and now we can see what he does with it. And it absolutely delivers.

Heath Ledger was obviously amazing as the joker but there was so much more. The plot was dark, deep, complex, and made you think (including questioning morality and order). The directing and cinematography was unparalleled. The special AND practical effects-such as actually flipping over a semi-trailer-were incredible. And the way the entire ensemble cast came together was superb-and not only Oldman, Freeman, Caine, Bale, etc., but everyone from the side villains & gangsters, to the paranoid schizophrenic, the bank manager, heck even the sniveling accountant. Nolan is a genius. Just a truly exceptional film.

TDK reached people who don't give a ff about superheroes, but who were seduced to watch by the performance of Heath Ledger. He created a character so complete it just needed a beating heart to bring him to life. He could have told you what the joker ate for breakfast, what his favourite drink was and if he had corns on his feet. No wonder it feels like the Joker is still stumping around in that nurse's uniform. The only thing I can compare it to is Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter, but somehow more likeable.

Something about it just seems more grounded in reality. Like The Joker could be a real person committing these crimes. Batman has no real superpowers and his feats through the movie aren't ridiculous like in The Dark Knight Rises where he gets his back fixed and climbs a giant 100 ft wall. TDK is at the top of the list, the reasons? Everything, acting, story, characters, etc. Ledger's Joker was a slightly different take on previous renditions of the Joker, that made the movie somewhat of a psychological thriller as well. I also think the Tobey McGuire Spidey's were pretty good as well, especially the first two as I thought the story lines were really well put together. The original Ironman is just below TDK and the first TM Spidey flick IMHO. I like all of the X men movies I have seen, but I was never a huge fan of them.

I think Heath Ledger's death has cemented this movie as a high standard, not that it wasn't before, but because his last performance was soooo reinventive and amazing, it kind of makes our minds think "Wow, he went all in on this performance." Mask of The Phantasm. MOTP is a close second at least. It's a pure batman story, that shows him love, hurt, and at its deepest level is an emotional breakdown of the caped crusader. Doing all of this without showing his parents murder was something almost unheard of for a Batman movie. For once, showing that Batman is driven by pain, not by a fragile psyche like many other portrayals. I'm sure someone will tell me it doesn't count because it isn't live action, but it did a normal length run in theatres at release, thus I count it as a movie

In my opinion, the Dark Knight is the standard for superhero/comic book films. What Nolan did with that film, and what Bale/Ledger did with their characters were extremely special. The story telling in TDK was flawless, and I doubt any other comic book film, whether its Marvel or DC can beat it. Logan came the closest, but I still gotta say TDK is still #1.

To most Avengers is actually the standard. The Nolan trilogy isn't really a cbm triligoy but more of a crime saga. Most superhero movies fit into fantasy(BvS, Avengers movies) or Sci-fi(GotG). Although TDK is still the best, it lacks comic book themes

The Dark Knight is the gold standard imo for one very simple reason - it was incredibly good. I still remember how me and my friends were mindblown now 10 years ago when we left the theater, and then we discussed a movie and it's themes for next few days... And those were all serious conversations, not same fanboyish rubbishness. That's something never happened after that on that level. The closest superhero movie when it comes to it's philosophy imo is Watchman, it was almost on that level. I did enjoyed Avengers 1, Winter Soldier and Logan(especially) as well, but there is something special about Dark Knight, it will be very, very hard to surpass it. It is The Godfather of mine generation.

Heath Ledger is the main reason why the Dark Knight was such a masterpiece. You've got to have a great villain in order for a superhero movie has a chance to be successful. Ledgers version of the Joker was not just the best comic book villain, but he was the best villain I've ever seen on screen.

One reason the Dark Night was great was because it made you, the watcher, be kinda part of the movie. It felt like you were there making decisions and feeling the tension. The reason why none of the other movies topped it was because they made a "watch" film without you being a part of the movie.

Everything in the movie was spectacular and I would even say a masterpiece. But what I love about the Dark Knight is that they have encapsulated Batman vs Joker in the big screen so well that I love it! No big cgi monstrosity (That's Batman with the Justice League fighting something big), and no fistfight against Joker (That would be Batman fighting against Deathstroke). It was all a mind game with Joker. That's why I loved it when Joker said the line "Ace in the hole" in the movie it just felt so right.

Obviously there is no clear evidence that Dent killed anyone or they couldn't blame Batman, so why not just leave Dent's death and death of 5 people he killed as unsolved murders? It wouldn't be the first unsolved crime in Gotham City. 2) Why would police give Joker a phone in prison (which he used to blow up that prison)? Joker's a terrorist, don't give him anything. 3) Why would people on 2 boats choose to not detonate? Since they cannot possibly know that Batman (or police) is coming to their rescue, there is no way to save other ship, either they will blow it up or Joker will. Since you cannot save other ship, why not destroy it to save your own ship? 500 dead people is better than 1000 (if those 500 couldn't be saved anyway). 4) Cops demanded Batman to surrender, so Joker would stop killing cops. When Dent surrendered as false Batman, they needed to transfer him to county jail. During that transfer, Joker killed more than 50 cops.

There is no second nor third or fourth when it comes to comparisons to TDK. TDK is more than a superhero movie if it is even one at all. It's a movie with comicbook characters in it. It went above and beyond the genre. Therefore there really is no comparison at all.

TDK, Logan, V for Vendetta and Wachmen are the best movies. They are set in their own universes and act like stand alone movies. Wonder Woman was good The Winter Soldier were good, but nowhere near close to TDK and Logan especially. Logan is by far the best Mavel movie, it stands out compared to the average Disney/Marvel movies that are out their. GOTG, Avengers, Doctor Strange, ect. are NOT great movies, good fun and entertaining, but nothing more.

The Dark Knight is one of the few movies I can just keep watching over and over. I know all the parts, all the lines, nothing's really a surprise... but it's a hell of series of skits and sequences and scenes that are less about big explosions or fights or special effects, and more about how the characters and villains interact with each other. The script and acting are a blend that I honestly never get tired of. Everyone has a couple of movies they can watch forever, this one is mine. I really want to say that Heath Ledger did it for me because it really looked and felt like he took the role seriously. Sure, maybe every actor before and after him who played the Joker was a huge fan of the comics and the TV shows and the expanded universe, but every other Joker tries too hard to make the Joker... well, a joke, an exaggeration of what he represents. Ledger went somewhere the others have yet to show us. He invented a dark joker with an unforgettable laugh, a love for anarchy and witty, well, jokes. Lines weren't corny or groaners, he was unique. And frankly, I'm perfectly okay with this movie being untouchable for a while. A lot of work clearly went into it, and the script didnt try to be something it wasnt.
