this is my first episode of this and an INSTANT watch for sammy, and i loved what he had to say about pinkwashing! i feel like those Big L Liberals forget that solidarity isn't transactional - for me, as a queer disabled white woman, i don't give a shit if that place's government hates me while they're actively being bombed out of existence. let's make sure the country still exists and THEN we can worry about the politics in that place. also those Big L Liberals forget that you can still be hate crimed here in the US for being queer. like... if you wanna play that game, we can play that game. anyway, great episode, i'm a big fan of all y'all, very much enjoyed this!

What most neoliberals don’t understand is intersectionality. There is homophobia in black communities but it would be absurd to bring that up when the topic is police brutality and that Black Lives Matter. Palestinian queers aren’t distinguished by Israel when they are ruthlessly subjugated, beaten, and bombed.

38:15 is a very valid point though and I don't feel it's that insane to point that out. It's not about telling LGBT folks how to feel or about trying to control the narrative by dividing the liberals. It's just about stating a very real fact about the way these people will be treated if they were protesting from within instead of outside the borders of palestine. They genuinely wouldn't have a voice in the same way they do in the US if they were in Palestine and it's worthwhile to point that out imo. Ps on a slightly related note, these nations are in a war so ofcourse people and kids (I'm fucking sorry that's how war works but that's the way it is) are gonna die. If Palestine was on the winning side and Israeli children were getting slaughtered in droves do you genuinely think Hamas would be as concerned about the innocent unlived lives that were lost?
@Djinnerator7 ай бұрын
I agree with some of your points, but I don't think the argument about if the positions were switched, Palestine wouldn't care about Israel's children. That kind of argument is what people use to justify their seemingly malicious choices. Wow that is a valid question, especially in the context of war, it's something that can lead to a huge array of ramifications that the answer to the hypothetical is unknown, because we don't have evidence of that. Now if there was plenty of evidence of Palestine bombing places where children gathered or places like hospitals, then yeah, that could be a question where its answer would rightfully affect choices people make.

With all due respect, a gay person in Gaza is much less likely to die to a hate crime than they are to an Israeli bomb or IDF soldier. There are parts of America that hate gay people too, I promise we wouldn’t want them bombed indiscriminately and their people mass murdered either
@alizard92287 ай бұрын
It's not a war, it's a genocide. I'm a white queer American and I've been pro-Palestine for a long time and there are queer people IN PALESTINE trying to change things. Those queer people are not going to be able to do it if they're dead. You people forget that queer people are also being murdered EVERY DAY IN PALESTINE BY ISRAEL statistically speaking, given that at least 1 in ~10 people in any given locale is LGBT. You should take up this hobby called "reading". It may help you out here.
@nataliaalfonso26626 ай бұрын
Your comment seems super confused. Of course people don’t have the voice to dissent in Palestine. Bc Palestine ISNT FREE. It’s under belligerent occupation. Hence why people want a FREE PALESTINE. And when Jewish refugees were escaping slaughter by the Nazis, Palestinians DID care about them. About the women and children…. AND ALSO THE MEN. That’s why they harbored them. Only for those same people to turn around and try to annihilate the Palestinians. when people bring up the “go there and protest” argument in regards to Palestine they are CONFUSED. “Go live there then” is a REALLY GOOD ARGUMENT against some idiot from a multi-million dollar house in Park Slope claiming they love communism while refusing to even pick up a tab lmfao. Cuz like…. What’s stopping them from denouncing their American citizenship and moving to Cuba then? GO LIVE THERE THEN IF IT’S SO GREAT. But when people are saying that Gaza is an outdoor concentration camp and calling for all of Palestine to be free… They’re not saying ITS GOOD THERE LMFAO. HELLO?!!!?!?

Some bad takes here but specifically Sammy saying that all unrest in the Middle East goes back to Israel/Palestine is laughable. What a generalization of a vast and complex area of the world that has such internal strife in almost every country. Iranian revolution about israel? Syrian civil war about israel? Rise of taliban about israel? Another one is Russel saying the current Israel/Hamas war is analogous to the Iraq war. I understand not trusting the same talking heads- but the 1:1 is just not there.
@dratchsaaaam7 ай бұрын
Also the whole LGBTQ+ thing as well- when Sammy uses whataboutism to shoo away the murder of gay people. No one is trying to manipulate or force people to take a stance, but the whole point of conversations on politics is bringing up relevant points to sway others. The same way someone may bring up points of colonialism when speaking to someone Irish. When Sammy asks “why is this just coming up now” is silly too. 1) it’s been pointed out a lot. 2) Now is when being pro Palestine is becoming more mainstream so points that give that nuance or challenge that will be brought up.
@corvacopia7 ай бұрын
Didn’t he say it all connects to, not that it all goes back to? And yes, of course the Iranian Revolution was connected to Israel, Iran is Israel’s chief geopolitical enemy now and before the Iranian Revolution they were more neutral; with the Syrian civil war, also, Israel literally admitted in 2019 to having armed Syrian rebels. Afghanistan is not generally considered to be in the Middle East, just on the edge of it, but I am not aware of any Israeli involvement there, so I’ll give you that. It is not like the Israel-Palestine conflict is at the center of these things, no, but it is certainly a component of it. And what is the major difference with the Iraq War? There was a terrorist attack on the US and then in response the US launched a war that mass murdered people; unless, of course, your argument is that it is more analogous to the Afghanistan War, then fair enough, I think the media climate is closer to that of the Iraq war but the conflict itself might be closer to that of Afghanistan, given that Israel has failed and will continue to fail to “destroy Hamas” and is instead mass murdering people and destroying homes in what is increasingly looking like it may become a forever war, except that they already in the first couple months dropped more bombs and killed more people than the year of the most bombs being dropped in the entire War in Afghanistan, and that is an entire country, not a densely populated strip of land
@moldypizza7 ай бұрын
Use two brain cells lmao. Israel sprung forth at the whim of a western colonial power carving up a map. Western imperial powers fucked up the Middle East, some in ways connect to Israel some not. But it’s all in the same interest.
@dratchsaaaam7 ай бұрын
@@corvacopia if his main point was that conflicts in the region have some connection to israel in some way, then you can make that argument about anything and the point is pointless. Israel was not the cause of the Syrian civil war, israel was not the cause of the Iranian revolution. Are there practical differences for israel now that they’ve happened? Yes. But just like there are or sticks differences for China when something major happens in the US even if they’re not involved at all. The Iraq war is not analogous and the bomb dropping stat is irrelevant. 1) The U.S.’s reasons for going into Iraq were flimsy- putting blame where it did not belong and the argument for national security was minor as there were no WMDs. Hamas, flourishing in Gaza was clearly responsible for the horrendous attacks of October 7th and since and have vowed to keep trying. The national security risk is obvious as there is an organized terrorist organization on Israel’s border with rockets and more. The need to respond was obvious and the continued threat is obvious as well. The fact that the verified threat, source of the attack, border, and whole political history being different- it’s not a 1:1 at all and I still disagree with Russel’s assertion that there’s irony for someone to be anti Iraq war but understanding the goals of this one.
