Also It wasnt the angry mob who put him in the coffin, it was himself. In the show, Barnabus colins tell his freind or what left of his family to put himself in the coffin with chains and a cross has his nobility has a vampire.

That's now how they turn him into a vampire, in the original show (I have to watch some episode of the original), seeking revenge Angalic Sunmmon a bat from hell, were he got bitten by the bat, and turn into a vampire.
