We used to get only 3 channels. NBC. CBS and if we were really lucky, on a good day we could get ABC. We had no cable--only an antenna. I remember watching when the tv would get fuzzy and turning that antenna control box dial I LOVED Dark Shadows !! I would run home everyday from the school bus to watch it. It still is scary, mainly because of the music and Barnabas Collins, of course.

My wife has a cousin that actually in real life (no pun intended) see ghosts and spirits. She could see echoes of the past as well like seeing a car drive through a cannon emplacement during the civil war. It was something she had to learn to compartmentalize in order to not go crazy. Her sister has the Dark Shadows theme song as the cell phone ringer for her. That particular music used to seriously creep me out as well.

57 years later, we can see that knock on Collinwood's door changed America's relationship to TV forever. Huge swaths of the population stopped the game, parked the bike, got home, put the baby in his pen and plopped themselves in front of the set. They made watching a TV show one of the pivotal events of their day as they stopped whatever they were doing and invited advertisers to pour targeted marketing into their heads. Even "I Love Lucy" didn't have the same affect, as fewer American homes owned TV sets and advertising was not yet overwhelmingly built around manipulating aspects of anthropolgy and psychology in the '50s.

When Barnabas strangles Willie, you can see that famous black onyx ring on the left hand, but if you look at the portrait of Barnabas at Collinwood the ring is on his right hand. During the course of the series that ring would continue to switch hands.
