What about the end being a heart beat as they're pounding the Tim Man's chest. And if you play the album again??? The begging is a heart beat to it still beating with the tin man and the another 30 minutes of coincidences and than a 3rd time through too. What about Glenda's arrival? @@DesignRhythm : Yeah, it's totally crazy to think that the most psychedelic, experimental, and performance art band of all time would do something crazy ingenious and subliminal, sort of inside joke to create an album that lines up so incredibly perfect to the first half of a legendary classic film is completely bonkers! Learning about the Echoes to 2001 would have been a great trial run a couple of years prior. Lining up other albums is seeing patterns in things, especially with only a handful of coincidences, but 65+ is hard to explain away. But like Nick Mason said, 'He always thought it was "The Sound of Music"'. Probably the GREASTEST non-denial quote I have ever read!

I have to say starting on the third lion’s roar, is the best version; if for nothing else than getting to hear Money so perfectly break the silence after the house crashes and Dorothy opens her door to Oz (it’s also the first time you see color in the film, which totally adds to the overall effect) and not to mention Oz is supposed to represent (among many other thing) be an allegory for capitalism as well and the fact that Money is the first song you hear when you “arrive” is a fairly amazing coincidence, to say the least ;)
@cbrown8814
@cbrown8814 Жыл бұрын
Coincidence or not, if you have it synced correctly, the ENTIRE Great Gig In The Sky track (IMO) easily provides the most compelling "evidence" for the argument that it was done on purpose. Random isolated lyrics and sounds here and there are one thing... but that entire song is spot on with the tornado scene. For me, the next most compelling coincidence is the transition into the very next track, Money. In the movie, as Dorothy exits her house into Munchkinland, the second she opens the door the cash register sounds and Money begins... this is also the point in the movie when original theater patrons viewed film in color for the very first time. On the vinyl copy of DSOTM, Great Gig closes Side 1, and Money begins Side 2. So the first half of the album is exactly the same time length as the initial black & white portion of the film. As soon as Dorothy opens the door, we get COLOR and the second side of the album resumes.... looking at the DSOTM album cover; a single beam of white light against a black background passes through the prism and becomes the color spectrum. If you can't do the math from here... 🤷‍♂️ sorry.

I have watched it a couple of times that way. And I was headed to the moon the first time I watched it. Usually that frame of mind will find things wrong or out of sync in a weird way. But it was such a compelling and comforting watch, that I was just completely blown away by it. There has to be something to it, whether they want to admit it or not. I don't know why they wouldn't, it makes the album and their work that much more genius and amazing. I think it's better than the original that way personally.

Only difference was we used vinyl instead of a CD and had to pause the VHS to flip the record lol. Edit: btw, he started it on the second roar, so that's how I've always done it. Someone in the 70's we're listening to Floyd while Oz was on TV with the volume down (kinda popular back then). People would get high and didn't feel like shutting off the TV, (no remote back then) . While they were high, they stared at the tv and realized it kinda synced up. Thus, the word got around. That's my thought, just coincidence.

What I find interesting about the Dark Side of Oz is the album cover shows the light turning into color just like Wizard of Oz being black and white and turns into color ushering in colored movies. Instead of making the first movie with color being all color they used it as a pretty cool gimmick.

I watched The Wizard of Oz synced up with Dark Side of the Moon for the first time just a few weeks ago here on KZbin. While I will admit there were some cool moments (Great Gig in the Sky while the house is caught up in the tornado), I don't think it's intentional. I think someone was high at a party where someone had music playing and the Wizard of Oz just so happened to be on at the same time.
@cdolan13

For me, Pink Floyd has always been a band that embraced the 'visualization of music', if you will. For instance, when they first started out with Syd Barrett they would show color slides of his artwork through the band and onto the wall behind them, which would bathe the band in varieties of colors during the show, which, as Syd took more drugs had the slides intentionally melted as they were shown to create a color-morphing effect. And now, we all know their concert shows with the round screen behind them are legendary. Not to mention when Dark Side of the Moon came out you couldn't be in a room with at least one person who hadn't taken a psychedelic drug while listening to the album, touting the fact they saw the most intense colors in their heads (experience descriptions varied). As @Modmary so succinctly stated in her comment below, their music can pair well with any movie. That being said, I am sure if you played any symphony from a classic composer that you could find where the music works well with any music, as well. After all, aren't music scores the classical music of our day? I, for one, don't care to mix mediums when listening to the music created by my favorite band. Playing the music while trying to find coincidences in a movie simply lessens the emotions the music creates when listening by itself. Bottom line, I am not one who has embraced The Dark Side Of The Rainbow conspiracy theory. Could they have done it on purpose? Sure, anything is possible. But, as you stated why wouldn't they admit to it? Unless they wanted it to be their own little inside joke? We'll never know...but what we do know is we do have one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

I remember “playing the game” when it first broke on the Internet 1.0. I was already a long-time Pink Floyd fan as a teenager (started listening to them at around five or so). It was definitely fun and works the best with just one play-through. One glaring flaw in the “more than coincidence, this is purposeful” theory is very simple. As cosmopolitan as they could be at times, Pink Floyd were very much an English band and The Wizard of Oz is very much an American cultural artefact. Furthermore, if it was purposefully designed, they could have done it better 😉. And finally, it was well documented as to how this album came about and no one ever uttered Oz. That said, this spontaneous synthesis does bring to light some interesting parallels between the works. Both were financially successful works that took advantage of some technological innovations. Both were informed by political issues, though Oz’s source novel was more about specific American politics from the 1890s (specifically about currency standard) whereas the album dealt with broader issues of modern living. Both have accumulated various legends and both have endured to be classics beyond its initial generation. So all in all … it’s all dark down in Emerald City 😁

To not mention Great Gig’s crescendos lining up perfectly with Dorothy’s frantic search for her family during the tornado 🌪️, then the drop off when she gets knocked out by the window falling in is a big miss. Then the long pause to Money starting when she opens the door to the colorful world of Oz? Glinda whispering in her ear as Waters sings “which is which (witch is witch) and who is who?” Literally every song has significant matches to the movie. My belief is they did it intentionally for themselves, not to publicize it, and when word got out they didn’t want to admit it.

This works with ANY album ANY film & ANY bong. Look up the phrase, "Confirmation Bias". Same reason fans of Nostradamus can read his vague quatrains and make connections as Post hoc rationalizations, which could falsely cause people to believe he could predict future events. Just because there's a correlation doesn't mean there is causation. This is also common in biblical interpretation. If one is beginning with the mindset that an omniscient deity inspired every word (even though it's been through so many translations and copies of copies and some of the later writings had the goal of fulfilling the previously written "prophecies"), then that person could falsely see correlation or causation where there is none. That's why learning about Skepticism, is so very important. (It should be a mandatory part of every curriculum). In the case of this video however, it's sometimes fun to let our brains wonder away temporarily.

How do the songs stop / start precisely with scenes in the film and relate to the content of the film? What are the odds DOTM flips to side 2 precisely when Wizard turns to color? It can't sync up for every single second because it had to repeat for the 2nd half of the film - that is what makes it even more astonishing. If u know Pink Floyd, they're not going to tell u all their secrets - they're artists. "There are no coincidences in life; only consequences."

The whole album has transitions to the next song. There is one transition in the album which is the most subtle and that's in the middle of the Album from "Great Gig in the sky" to "Money" and exactly there the movie goes from Black and White to Technicolor. Exactly like the album cover. That's in my opinion the biggest coincidence. Apart from the obvious stuff mentioned by everyone already and "somewhere over the RAINBOW".

I wonder now since such a theory for this album has existed for so long. If any artists since have made an album that syncs with a specific film and let it go unnoticed as a super Easter egg. Anyone could do it for any film and nobody may ever know. Like what is To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar syncs up with some random film like Forest Gump or ShawShank Redemption

I had to watch it again, and really whatever you think it is.... there's no way it's just confirmation bias .... it can be a phenomenal coincidence that you get 2 of the most iconic cultural products in the century and they sync almost perfectly . I say perfectly cause you can have 5 or 6 syncs when you try to match a random album with a random movie. But over a hundred syncing points within the Dark Side of OZ is something else. Anyway it is a great master piece , the twister scene and than the movie turning colored right when Money begins to play. It's really amazing, no matter how was done.

As someone who did this back in the 90’s (which was the first time I heard of it, the Usenet newsgroups at the time also recommended cueing up Animals to play right after DSOTM while letting the movie continue to play. Among the synchronicities with Animals, Dogs has this jaunty feel that matches the movie as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man are skipping down the Yellow Brick Road. The Cowardly Lion does his whole “Put ‘Em Up!” Routine while the flanged dogs are barking while Dogs is playing. the beginning of Sheep has an uncanny matchup so the flying monkees section that is every bit as good as any synchronicity in DSOTM.

I’ve heard the 2001/Echoes sync wasn’t an accident, but rather they were initially picked for the soundtrack. When Stanley Kubrick changed the score to established classical pieces, they kept what they had for their next album. Not sure how true that is, but it would make more sense than Dark Side and Wizard.

In the 80s and 90s it was not uncommon to channel-surf on cable TV, while the speakers played a CD or the radio. The amount and extent of synchronicity between completely random video and audio elements is unquantifiable... but often hilarious, sometimes bizarrely anomalous, and occasionally so synchronous as to seem impossible, or predestined by a higher intelligence. Combine this event with a couple of bong hits, and you've got a cultural phenomenon waiting to explode.

I love it when people try to argue that there are "too many synchronicities" for it to have happened by chance. Oh? According to whom? Is there some universally agreed-upon mathematical table showing the exact number of "synchronicities" required to prove that it couldn't just be coincidence?

It would be impossible for the band to have done it. I believe it's proof of something supernatural. What gives me that impression is how well the syncing is after the CD repeats. Perhaps supernatural abilities acquired by Syd? I like the mystery of it all.
@Charles2112pp
@Charles2112pp 8 ай бұрын
Why would it be impossible? Surely you’re aware that musicians regularly score movies. I trust them when they said it was a coincidence, but calling it impossible to write music to accompany a film just seems to be a completely uninformed statement.
@lordgoogoo539
@lordgoogoo539 8 ай бұрын
@@Charles2112pp but what I believe makes it supernatural is the number of connections to the movie after the album repeats. If you compose music to match part of a film understandable. But they would have piece together lyrics in such a way that one line matches an early part of the film then after the repeat lyrics arranged to perfectly match a later part of the movie. I wouldn't say impossible but that would force a songwriter to consider pieces of film that have a large gap between them chronologically and write music to match the separate pieces. For example the start of the album doesn't really match anything at the start of the film but on the 2nd playthrough you have the heartbeat and the sound of machinery as the tin man comes back to life. It's such a complicated scenario I have trouble explaining my thoughts in this comment! Lol However, since the obvious matching of Echoes to the end of 2001 space Odyssey is apparent, there is credibility to the belief that they were able to pull off the task of matching to wizard of Oz. If so, it's the greatest accomplishment in music history.

@lordgoogoo539 that was my sentiments about it. I would want to take credit for such a feat. As someone who has watched it a few time that way, it blew my mind how spot on and in accordance with the film the music is. That is the best way to watch it, IMO. Though I still like both independent of each other.

Kicking back with the headphones on and having to watch your little brother or sister and the only way to keep them occupied was throwing some wizard of Oz because they would stay glued to the TV for a couple. 4 hours .. meanwhile you've got you Walkman or something on with some Pink Floyd can you just got done smoking a big fat joint life is good with your bowl of Cocoa pebbles in front of the TV with everybody occupied...
