Fun fact, unlike other souls like games, dark souls 2 actually has a respawn limit for enemies meaning if you kill every enemy on the way to a boss fight enough times they just stop coming eventually
@Marwington2 жыл бұрын
And if you want to continue farming or something, you can always either rise the bonfire level, or join the covenant that makes enemies respawn infinitely. This game is really underestimated, especially with how its coop works.

In general, DS2’s art direction is better than DS3’s in my opinion. Not on the boss department, but in everything else. DS2’s locations are incredibly memorable, while DS3’s are just bogged down to a grey mess. This is the one reason why I like DS2 more than DS3, because I was so thoroughly enthralled by its world, even though DS2’s bosses are leagues behind DS3’s.

Majula is my favorite hub out of the trilogy. Returning to the game, I always get such a sense of nostalgia first walking into Majula. Apart from looking beautiful, it has such a relaxing/melancholy vibe. Perfectly represents the decaying world of dark souls 2 with the occasional unique individuals holding on to a mission/purpose. I am not fully done with DS1, so I don't know if the same happens but love the NPCs coming to Majula little by little making it just a little less lonely.

The thing I love about this game is the customisability of the experience. All stats and substats make considerable changes on how the game plays (other than endurance with +1 stamina per level after 20, you want stamina regen instead but very end game 99 endurance can be funny with all stamina gear). You can get extremely close to elemental immunity if you get 1k resist towards an element, 100% elemental block shields too, you can have almost 4k hp with very strong physical resistance, You can be a strong omnicaster build using sorceries, miracles, hexes and pyromancies without super gimping your character's hp. You got poison builds that actually kill things with poison alone fast. You can play the game on cbt mode and start as bandit without putting any points in ADP. They designed it specifically for this because once you gain a single point of agility your i-frames increase by 0.1 seconds instead of the 0.033 of the usual on agility breakpoints. Ranged weapons are all extremely good and is at their strongest in the whole series in this game and many more. Almost all weapon types have something broken about them but yes rapier and mace and sometimes the greatsword are the most known ones. Most greathammers can pancake stunlock everything staggerable with the two handed R2. Lances with leo ring can get 1000-1300 damage per hit and they aren't even slow also since leo ring works for every attack hit during the entire attack animation of an enemy active damage hitbox or no it's really broken. Whips, while there isn't many old whip is great for just damage and spotted whip if you dual wield is the highest poison in the game. Greatswords are more 4fun but they have a lot of variety, most unique ones are bluemoon greatsword and moonlight greatsword where the former is a very strong non scaling low stat weapon and moonlight has huge range with 1 handed greatsword attacks while 2 handed becomes ultra greatsword for some reason. Also if you go enchanted infusion It literally becomes a physical damage weapon for some reason. But ye this comment went on long enough...

@Flamy Yea it's not even explained anywhere when you actually get the i-frame increase, it's all dataminers. They also could have made it so it's less effective for fast rolls so you wouldn't be gimped so hard if you decided to not level it as long as you stay light. Should have kept mid roll from DS1 as well, it's weird seeing 60-69.9% roll animation especially the latter.

Dark Souls 2 is a very good game geld back by its own gameplay. The story seems fantastic to me. I honestly could talk hours about it. I like the feeling I get by seeking answers in fallen kingdoms whilst trying to fight the undead curse.. Vendrick and Aldia making me question this world and the choices laying before me... The whole story with Vendrick being betrayed by his "dear 'Shandra"... Kinda reminds me of Game of Thrones. The atmosphere and the tone are perfect (Majula, finding Vendrick, some core NPC dialogue), most of the environments are good, (except Black Gulch, Shrine of Amana and the Undead Crypt, these can fuck off, so frustrating), maybe the map design isn't as clever and tightly wrapped as DS1, but it is a rich environment you can get lost in, and the DLC's are almost excellent. If you can get past the overall clunkiness of movement, hotboxes (yours and the enemies') and the fact that it is really outdated, you have an excellent game in your hands. Each game brings its own thing to the formula, so each of them stand out as their own game while feeling very familiar. Welcome to the party, you have so much to look forward to. Once you get through the modern FromSoft library, there's plenty left to check out. Iron Pineapple's channel can really help with finding or avoiding games, as he is all about covering every Souls-like he can find. Also, DS2 was co-directed by a guy that previously directed Monster Hunter games, and those are worth checking out. Not Souls-like, but there were a lot of comparisons back before the genre was really a thing. Moderately high difficulty, weighty and deliberate combat, and a high learning curve. That said, it's basically nothing but boss fights for 60-400 hours, there's no real exploration, and the RPG systems are gear/crafting based instead of Wizardry inspired.

Dark Souls 2 did some things actually better than DS1 and DS3. DS2 lets you Infuse nearly ANY weapon. Including boss weapons. Neither DS1 nor DS3 allow this. Got a cool fire sword from Smelter Demon? Well you could infuse it to be the Fire Smelter sword, which changes it from a physical/Fire weapon to just Fire weapon. You could do this with bows as well. Short bow to Fire Shortbow to compliment your Fire Arrows. DS1/DS3 didn't allow this either. I for the love of god don't know why DS3 didn't carry this level of freedom over. There so many more fun builds you can do when you can literally infuse nearly any weapon.

When you first find that giant dragon, or when you look up into the sky and see all of those drakes flying around, or the very start of the game when you exit the cave and see Majula. It's the best game for the visuals and sets in my opinion.

Dark souls 2 was my gateway into souls. I had played demons souls beforehand but never beat it nor got back into it, though I should since I'm blessed with a PS5. Dark souls 2 was the first I actually played through and multiple times. Thousands of hours. Hooked. And playing every other souls game- except demon souls, but -- including Bloodborne, with or without nostalgia goggles I still find DS2 to be the best. Even with thousands of hours in 1,3, and BB. However what I don't understand is how you can fight "the last giant" in DS2 and then find multiple giants in DS3.

I think one good thing in DS2 is that it had a fix for two big pvp problems. Poise monsters and backstab abuse. There was a ring for lowering someone’s poise, as well as the bone fist weapon. That thing was a fun weapon, and even better for poise breaking especially with that kick. And let’s not forget about the jester/turtle armors the preventer backstabbing. I get DS3 had the scale ring, but people will still abuse backstabs. Just a random little spiel about nothing, have a day good Sirs and Ma’ams.

Ds2 definitely had the best poise in the series, however backstabs i disagree with you, in ds3 they were pretty much refined to perfection, in ds2 there’s a lot of teleporting backstabs
@Lucas616162 жыл бұрын
@@minecraftmaster12245 I'm gonna have to argue with that ds3 "pretty much perfection" comment on backstabbing. As someone who spent a solid chunk of time just being obsessed with ds3 pvp, backstabbing is nowhere near perfection, its only slightly less of a problem than the other games. Hell, most ds3 pvp consists of parry and backstab fishing, and it only gets worse whenever you have to fight 2 or more people as an invader, which is absolutely gonna consist of a huge amount of your invasions in ds3. The hitboxes are mostly better, but its still just too easy to fulfill backstab criteria in ds3. At the very least, ds2 backstabs require closer proximity and take a little longer to actually go through, even if the hitboxes leave something to be desired.

I imagine so but there is another use for it that falls into what pen was doing but didn't do it optimally. The areas have limited respawns for monsters. Kill them enough times and they wont ever respawn again until the next new game. So if you want to keep farming the zone you'd have to use an ascetic. If you time it for after the areas boss then even more souls. But honestly, no one does this unless they really like farming that one zone.

I've been playing Scholar recently to platinum it and I think the problem is that when they were making the game they went down the list of the games mechanics and made each one just a bit harder (and in many cases more annoying). Longer commits to estus, item use, and fog walls that leave you vulnerable to getting canceled out; ADP with different timing of s and rolls; more enemies in every area; higher stamina use and unforgiving stamina recovery; etc. None of these are necessarily bad individually but they add up to a more tedious and annoying experience. I think it suffered from "dark souls hard" memes and they tried to make it hard for the sake of making it hard, rather than just make it unforgiving for people who don't adapt. If they just used the same underlying mechanics code from DS1 and then made the rest of the game the way it shipped people would have enjoyed it more compared to the others.
@trickydiagram52672 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer all of those changes you mentioned; it makes 2 a more methodical experience. Estus use being long makes PVP really interesting as you can easily interrupt the guy trying to chug in the midst of battle. Stamina recovery is fun since it encourages you to learn how to avoid attacks beyond just dodge and guarding since strafing is so powerful. ADP probably sounded like a good idea at first but I'll admit it's a bit of an arbitrary skill. And honestly; the people who say 1 are better I genuinely think are on nostalgia crack; that game doesn't even have omni-directional rolling on lock-on.
@SBRS472 жыл бұрын
@@trickydiagram5267 I agree with you about the cardinal directional rolling in DS1. "Hurr dur just roll when not locked on," would say people who miss the point. What the changes do is force you to play very conservative. Sometimes it makes it interesting but too often it just drags out encounters and forces you to just bow pull things from range. Then when you get to the end of the encounter and accidentally attack once too many and can't roll you get stunlocked and have to restart. Enough of this and you start to cheese the game with poison lmao. I think that the changes aren't necessarily bad. Obviously you enjoy them so some people like the game this way. However, I think it plays so much slower than the other games that it just naturally divides the playerbase. It really does have a lot of good shit in it. I think the environments are great, the massive amount of armors and weapons are great, and some of the lore is pretty cool. I just wish it was a bit closer in feel to the other games.
@trickydiagram52672 жыл бұрын
@@SBRS47 I guess you got a point; I like slow and methodical games so 2 resonates with me, for some people that's clearly not the case. And yeah I used poison cheesing sometimes; but it's fun watching that healthbar go down rapidly.
@benhillman83842 жыл бұрын
Imo it's not specifically that they made every element harder so much as that they attempted to iterate more mechanical depth with varying degrees of success. Even fundamental mechanics like the bonfire respawning enemies got altered in interesting ways with the finite amount of souls that can be harvested from an area before you need to weigh up increasing the power of enemies.
@SBRS472 жыл бұрын
@@benhillman8384 I'm on the fence about that one because you could argue that they make it easier by making the boss runs free after enough grinding. That being said, some of those runs are absolute dog shit (Old Dragonslayer, Executioner's Chariot) and you can use a bonfire ascetic or the champion's covenant to bring them back so it's moot anyway. I also forgot to mention how much they abuse gravity in this game. It's like every single level has large sections where you can fall off the map. Why did they put 2 gaps in the bridge on the way to Chariot? It's like their goal was to fuck you over once or twice for free every level just to waste your time lmao.

@SpaceBoy Nah the unfairness in DS2 come in with traps that are cheap, dodgy hitboxes, awkward movement, etc. I don't think it is immensely unfair, but it has specific moments that are much cheesier than DS1. I always think of the path through Alva's keep to Archdragon Peak, there's an ogre that breaks through a wall and has the ability to oneshot you. Once you know he is there it's fine but it feels really lame to get one shot out of nowhere. That happened kind of a lot. And hitboxes were objectively less consistent. If you adapt to the jank it's not too bad. DS2 has some neat qualitites that the others don't so I think there's plenty to love. DS1 is more concise. It doesn't overstay its welcome and it feels a bit less clumsy and arduous to play. But DS2 has a lot of content so if you want tons of content you'll be thrilled. Which game is your favorite is likely to be whichever you played first understandably, thats when the concept is more novel. For me I liked each Dark Souls game less than the last, probably because I was growing up and I didn't have as much time or patience to play games. And my homies that play souls games weren't playing anymore. Whereas I know people who started with 3, and it's their favorite because mechanics are a lot snoother.

I think it's the story, for me. It's the most self-aware of the souls games and the only one, besides the DLC of DS3, to make a note of the fact that Gwyn putting the fire in a loop has made the world so, so tired. Like, Straid didn't even bother to care about the name of the kingdom he's been around so long, watched empires rise and fall on repeat until it didn't mean anything anymore. I know most of the loreless bosses are a symptom of having swapped dev teams halfway through the game's development, but to me, it feels like they're genuinely forgotten about in canon. Who the hell is the Pursuer? What crime did he commit to be sentenced to eternal life until every last undead is killed, a sentence one can't even carry out? Nobody knows, nobody ever will. And I sort of love that. It's like accidentally pissing off an SCP.

@Lin_Eileen2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRedstonian If you think Dark Souls 1 didn't acknowledge that Gwyn preserving the age of fire was making the world tired you didn't play it or just didn't pay attention to it's story and themes. It was the entire point of the game, Gwyn, the Gods and The Way of White are not portrayed as "the good guys" they are subjugating the undead to try and make a permanent cycle of linking the fire which is the cause for the entire chaotic state of the world. Gwyn is not "putting the fire in a loop" he is stopping the loop. He kindled the first flame to prolong the age of fire and stop the age of dark/humanity from coming and from Scholar we know that the age of dark always comes but it also will always end and fire will return it never truly fades. Gwyn is only prolonging the inevitable and not preventing anything. Dark Souls 2 SotFS is the game that introduced the concept of it being a perpetual cycle between light and dark. In Dark Souls 1 you aren't sure of what will come after the age of fire ends; if it will ever come back or it will just be dark forever or dark and then some new age it's up to you to decide if prolonging it is the right thing or becoming the dark lord is. The tragic reality is from what Aldia said in Scholar if that is actually true that fire will always seemingly fade to nothing and bring about dark but will always eventually come back too. The fire never truly fades and dark never truly goes away either. In the Dark Souls 1 DLC we get to see what the world would be like in the true age of Dark, if it was under the influence of the Dark Soul instead of the other Lord Souls and it's different from the age of fire but not better, it is also a chaotic world tired and on it's last legs. Manus/the Pygmy tried to isolate with the dark soul and keep it contained from the other lord souls and it resulted in the spreading of the corrupting abyss which contributed to the downfall of Gwyn's kindgom in the same way his prolonging of the age of fire did. "From the dark, they came... and found the souls of Lords within the flame." "They" are Gwyn, The Witch of Izalith, Nito, & the Pygmy/Manus. They found the souls of Lords within the flame all together, meaning the Dark Souls comes from the same place as the other Lord Souls. They were never meant to be apart light and dark co-existed together in harmony until humanity found the Lord Souls.

@@Lin_Eileen I feel like there are some heavily differing interpretations here between what I understood the lore as and what you do, so in the nature of not writing up an essay just to throw my opinions at you, I disagree, but your interpretations are valid. What I meant by my original post, though, was that DS2 acknowledged how *tired* the world was. After cycles layered over and over, light, dark, light, dark, light, dark. Oolacile had a bit of a tango with the Abyss (slightly different than a true Dark, but that's semantics), sure, but it wasn't infinite cycles later. It was once, in the moment. Manus was angy, things were messed up. But DS2 is about 8 or 9 kingdoms into things by the time you get there. That's what I meant by tiredness; all this history lying around you that either nobody remembers or nobody cares about, probably both, unless it has something you can loot from it.

Dark souls 2 is my favorite of the souls series because the sheer scale of the world that the level design exhibits. The other souls games areas were very similar in terms of the environments that they had however with dark souls 2, sometimes I even forget that 2 areas are from the same game so it makes me feel like I have traveled a long way in the world to end up in those different places. The npc characters were also much more interesting in 2, you had so much variety for example the man with the fake moonlight sword and it connecting to freya, creigton and felkin's interaction, the story of nashandra and vendric. Hell, I liked drangliec castle's dark and rainy atmosphere more than anor londor. Pvp in DS2 is most balanced and stable in the trilogy. The reason people consider it bad is because of it's buggy nature, which is definitely a problem, however to someone whose played skyrim for a long time, that stuff doesn't seem to bother me much.

Are we not going to talk about how beautiful DS3's areas are? Like for example kiln of the first flame. It is so massive and large even though it is a linear area and just fits the feeling of, "This is it, the final boss." As you only hear no music and a bit of wind, and you approach the main boss room as you see the beautiful room with flowers and a guy sitting at a bonfire, and you could feel the resemblance of them and yourself. Absolutely amazing, you can't tell me otherwise.

I love this game. I’ve played 1 and 3 multiple Times, and this one only once . One 220 hour play through. Out of the 3, this one had the most fuckery in it. But it also had the best lore and that is often overlooked. The king and his brother tried to break the rekindling cycle, eventually coming to a tragic end. Watching vendrick wander around in the dark is so sad. The reason I haven’t came back to this one is because I know imma take forever, exploring and enjoying the story lol.

I hold this game dear to my heart. It was the first one I played and shit, I had a blast. After I beat it, I started looking up the lore (through Vaati, of course), which made it even better. I started playing as a phantom for a friend of mine that was experiencing dark souls for the first time and I would guide him through the game while telling him everything I learned about the lore. That was many years ago but he still says that was the best gaming experience he ever had. That's probably why I always say this is the best souls game (and also because dodge rolling wasn't as ridiculously spammable as it is in DS3).

No joke, this one is unironically my second favorite in the series. The story, the nostalgia, the voice acting, the amazing DLCs, the amazing music. It introduced some of my favorite mechanics in the series. While some bosses were lame, I don't think any of them were boring, some of them were fun to bully, some were infuriating but not horrible, and honestly it has some of the most creative boss fights in the series I think, like the executioner chariot. It holds a special place in my heart. Also, people say it looks shit, and yeah the base game looks shit, but I think the scholar of the first sin edition looks pretty good. As a Dark Souls 2 SOTFS veteran (with 1250+ hours spent playing), the only thing that I don't like on this game was the durability system and how shitty the collision is on certain enemies. What I also don't like in this game, was the DS2 modding community is dead, or at least not that great compared to DS1 and DS3. However, this game still deserves the attention it needs from the fans. It is also the best optimized PC souls game of all time btw, so you don't have to worry about your PC specs.
@alexmark65802 жыл бұрын
Very true, the game isn't as terrible as people make it out to be. A lof of people said enemy ganking is bad in DS2, but it happens in DS3 as well. I agree, collision/hitbox issue felt awful even with leveling ADP. Some attacks magnetized your character to the blade, like the pursuer thrust attack. or Fume Knight sometimes. Edit: Never mind DS2 had terrible ganks, worse than the hollows from ds1. If you don't have alluring skulls it's just an enemy kite-fest.
@Eiferius2 жыл бұрын
I played the original DS2 when it came out and DS2 SOFTS very recently. The first thing i noticed was, that they increased the enemy aggression rate insanly, sometimes even breaking level geometry. Made the game way less fun, getting ganked by 4-5 alonne knights in Iron Keep.

Actually that's not the case for me. I played Dark Souls 1 first, and I loved it. It will always have a special place in my heart, and I think it has the best level design of any FromSoft game. But due to the vast improvements to combat feel and boss design, as well as absolutely stunning DLC, I prefer both Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. Those games just feel so polished and good to play, and the bosses (especially in DS3) are just so so good. Whenever I go back and play DS1 or DS2, the slower and more clunky combat makes me miss the responsiveness and smoothness of the later entries.

Good to see I’m not the only one who went back and decided to give DS2 another try / a 2nd run it does have a few unique things that separate it from the rest in creating a unique play through each new game with added enemies/difficulty in making each play through different. Actually has a good Poison build for once in a souls game. Best dragon form. Easily one of the best Fashion souls games. Probably the best thing about it is the dual stance giving multiple builds and variety to the game. Sadly that’s really about it the negatives kinda upset this game sadly. Good to see that Elden ring will be bringing back the best thing about this game in the dual stance.

@@Pandemia616 no it’s a game that we want to be good. There’s plenty of cool Ideas for features in this game but literally everything in this game’s execution is sub par. -There’s lots of bosses, 75% are bad, uninspired, ganks, or reskins. -magic is good but it’s only used as a means of cheesing areas and bosses. -the level design and layout is atrocious. Enemy design and placement is atrocious. -i actually like the concept of adp but it’s execution is atrocious. -Hitboxes are atrocious. -certain weapon types are atrocious, if you can’t break an enemy’s poise you’ll quickly die as literally every enemy on the map will get aggro’d on you. -the jumping mechanics and “parkour” are atrocious, but that goes for all souls games but it’s worse in this one. -The movement is atrocious -the lock on mechanic works 50% of the time. - The animations in this game are awful across the board, some enemies have attacks with no wind up so you get hot instantly by them, some attacks don’t look like attacks at all. -The player’s attack animations are terrible coupled with how you’re locked in place when attacking. With certain enemies you will frequently hit them out of your range. -Magic in this game, just like every other souls on becomes viable at later levels, the difference is leveling up is easy as shit and you’ll get to level 100 a 3rd of your way into the game. -soul memory multiplayer (same thing with base ds1) -you must kill EVERY enemy in the map to progress to a boss fight as they have huge aggro range and speed, coupled with the other issues mentioned above makes dying extremely tedious. So while there are cool Ideas in ds2 ^ those things I listed above, many of which are basic gameplay elements, weigh this game down into the muck. It just seems must people forget that fundamental aspects of this game are terrible because of powerstancing and fashion.

DS lore spoilers in this comment. Most people didn't know that dark souls 2 was connected to the rest of the trilogy in a meaningful way until after dark souls 3. Dark souls 1 presented the events as a moment between the age of light and dark, we are repeating the actions of Gwyn but this situation was easily interpreted as unsustainable. Dark souls 3 reveals that that moment is actually a cycle that is in fact very sustainable. DS2 adds to our knowledge of how the lord souls are changing but didn't resonate with us because we didn't want to accept that the physical things in the dark souls universe were much more transient than the metaphysical things. This is because just going off DS1 there are huge metaphysical changes and no major physical changes.
@tinminator89052 жыл бұрын
I mean, anyone who read the lore did know how it was connected before DS3. Fromsoft just decided to make DS3 make no sense because it defies major rules of the world established in DS1 and 2 with no explanation and just ignores the things that happened in 2 completely. The timeline was always convoluted but DS3 made it so bad that everything, considering the previous games, is a mess and cannot possibly be explained in any reasonable way. On a surface level if you skip DS2 entirely and you don't read the lore of 1 you can make sense of the general lore. If anyone is interested in the lore beyond that, just don't try to take DS3 lore seriously.
@voidpriest46592 жыл бұрын
The one thing I don't get about this reading of DS lore is that the only way the age of fire is sustainable is by fucking over everyone to preserve a system that actively hurts those involved so when you say ds3 reveals it's sustainable I'm curious as to what you mean? Isn't the main premise that so few undead have made it that now even their ash must rise to the call?
