If you like souls games, there's no reason not to play it. There are SO MANY bosses and levels that it can be overwhelming, but there's a lot of good in it. I love this game, though I definitely agree that it has rough edges. Enemy ambushes and snipers are something you need to plan for. My suggestion for a fun build is to start as a knight, focus on Strength, and work your way towards the Drangleic Set, Craftsman's Hammer, Tower Shield, and Dragonrider Bow. You certainly don't have to follow this build, of course, but it's the one I had the most fun with out of four playthroughs, and it lets you get all your key items early on.
@sainterasmus45453 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth giving a go, I was the same as you, never played it until recently. I loved it in the beginning cause it was a new journey into the Souls world, but in the end I was starting to understand why people say it's the worst of the series. It all culminated when I beat the main game and was forced to watch 6 minutes of credits, half of which was for the original Dark Souls 2, a game I don't even own. It would be like beating Dark Souls 3 and being forced to watch the credits for DS3 and DS1 for no good reason. Now I still have the dlc's to complete but I simply can't be bothered to deal with more ambushes, ridiculous level design, overpowered NPC invaders and the list goes on. Maybe one day I'll return to finish the DLC's, but this is definitely the game in the series that I have the least desire to play again, compared to Dark Souls 1 which I completed before DS2 and immediately started another playthrough of again after DS2.
@sainterasmus45453 жыл бұрын
@@occams_blazer You should probably add item durability to that list, this is the only game where I felt forced to carry two weapons at the same time, even with the bracing knuckle ring. Also, to OP, if you're gonna play this game on PC without a controller (like I do) be prepared to mess around with the control scheme for a little bit, it is nothing like Dark Souls Remastered or Dark Souls 3, it's absolutely insane. Also also, you have to turn off "double click actions" every single time you go into the game to eliminate latency between button presses and actions... actually, every time after you've first turned that "feature" off, you have to first turn it on and then off again, cause it will turn itself on after each boot-up of the game but pretend not to in the settings. It's stupid, but the Dark Souls games aren't generally the best ported PC games, except for DS1R, that one is pretty alright.

That first attempt against Giant was a perfect example of how panic is the enemy in all Souls games. In stark contrast to earlier moments in the video she was instead calm / un-panicked and was strategizing and taking her time; she came so close to killing (and we’ve all probably had a death from being greedy for that ‘one last hit for the kill’ which ache like no other, esp when you know the system enough to know you deserved it) but like others have said, you know if you can get that close then you can definitely do it. Was also great to see her immediately learn from the stomp and back away, another example of Souls lessons! Was nice to hear her say “I deserved that” again after I seem to recall her feeling differently in one of the others. . Another great video and fun to watch! Thanks!

Plus that I think the whole DS2 being the black ship of the series is that because the developer team of DS1 and Hidetaka Miyazaki were working on Bloodborne. @@alismaeeli4883 I disagree, literally half the content was cut from the final game, this made them just shove in bosses, like the dragon rider, the giant dog-rat-thing, the bad ornstein, that don't look like they were supposed to be bosses or even in the game at all. Furthermore a lot of areas that were supposed to be in the game are still in the files and they are in different levels of finishing. One thing about this video, watching it back much later, is that if you were looking to find an alternative weapon for your partner (assuming you were willing to break your rule about not giving her instructions) you could have directed her to the Morning Star in Majula. It's not what I'd call common knowledge among first time players, but DS2 has a lot of little things like this; starting with the Warrior gives you the highest starting Strength stat, which also coincidentally happens to be the exact necessary amount to wield the Morning Star, which you can get in the hub area at the beginning of the game. So, picking the class with the worst starting weapon also secretly gives you access to arguably the best one. Just a little thing to think about in terms of the design of the game. These videos are all such gold.

I feel like something a lot of people miss about DS2 is that the crowds of enemies aren't there to overwhelm you, they're there to teach you how not to get overwhelmed. Yes, they are too much to deal with all at once... and that's supposed to teach you to stop trying to deal with them all at once. Use the terrain to your advantage, find choke points, circle around obstacles to separate one or two targets from the horde, pick some off at range, skirt the edges of the battlefield to pick off stragglers. One of the things I loved most about DS2 were the huge groups of enemies that you could tackle in a strategic pattern, taking them down piece by piece. It really surprised me to see people complaining about it after I hopped online. I guess some people didn't pick up on those lessons quite as easily.
@NowioFel3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a good idea implemented unpleasantly. If the enemies had no hyperpoise and hitting them would be as satisfying as DS1, or they would stagger as in BB, or their spawns would be more reasonable... it would have been better.

I'M SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS, I LITERALLY DROPPED MY CHORES TO WATCH 6:05 they're kobolds, and they're friendly, and I love them very much, they're like very ugly sweet dogs that don't harm you unless you harm them, and make the world seem bigger, since it implies that not everything revolves around you, PC, being attacked for any reason :) 9:30 I think that's more DS1's fault on alluding that fog walls are usually for the bosses - but even *there* you can have fog walls that are just. fog walls. especially in the first areas. I myself threw that expectation out of the window and went through tutorial fine, but I see why people that have experience/expectations from the series would get frustrated with that or even miss it. many fair points about the gameplay, but as someone who suffered through early 00s of 3d movement, I didn't hate it as much :'D 13:40 oh, I wonder what her reaction to Alvina in DS1 would be! DOMESTICATED BOARS TURNING BACK TO WILD JUST BE LIKE THAT!! 22:12 "it's not as annoying as Bloodborne" + the following death explanation of DS2? I literally *canNOT* agree more, I'm shaking your girlfriend's hand FURIOUSLY at so many points of the playthrough so far 25:40 my favourite speedrun strat 🥰 I am *so* happy that she took the Last Giant defeat in stride and then got back at him, and just her reactions to the game make me feel all fuzzy about my own first playthrough :') thank you for the series, and my biggest of handshakes about the rating of the games with her, even though I'm still very so-so about whether or not place DS1 now along with DS2 as my favourite, and don't have the time to play DS3 much yet. but yeah, it was great fun!!

“It’s just another thing to get over” says the girlfriend. If all the people that played ds2 had this attitude then there wouldn’t be so much of a split in the community. The little things that piss you off, make the game harder or more frustrating can make it all the more satisfying when you master the game. Once you get to a certain skill in this game you can experiment with any class. It’s the next game in a series that made itself known through difficulty and beauty and it definitely tried a lot of things. Ds2 has my favorite artwork in any of the series it’s my favorite game in the series because of how long it took me to fight the mechanics and difficulty but once I did it was like riding a bike and now I can sit back and watch videos like this and fall in love all over again(even though someone is negatively reviewing everything about it through the entire vid lmao) Good video none the less it might not be the most popular topic but it’s one I’m sure a lot of people are passionate about like me.

The word thing about DS2 and beginners is not knowing about having to put points into the skill that allows proper invincibility frames on your dodge roll. Forget the skill or what it's called. But it can literally be the deciding factor whether you play through or set it done and never play again. I didn't learn untill halfway through the game or more. For her to play as long as she did without it. She's a legend. Ds2 was very tough until I found out about this mechanic.

In my opinion, ds2 is not as bad as it is sometimes portrayed, it's just that it is an unfinished, bloated and unbalanced mess when compared to the other souls games. It has some incredibly unique and inspired places and combat, which alway make me come back after a few months. I think that it has a very strong start with Majula, which is just a lovely place people tend to remember fondly, and gets worse as it goes on. It's gameplay is super clunky with too many enemies, so it is about slowly and methodically carving your way through the levels. There are parts that work very well this way and are rather fun, and some that are incredibly poorly designed; be it with ambushes, spam, broken enemies, unfair mechanics or incredibly deadly surroundings. These parts sort of come in bumps of artificial difficulty. You play for a while and have fun, then slam your face into a trial-and-error spam fest and the game slows down to a crawl. Then everything is great for a while, until you are hit with the next one. Which is why I have this love-hate relationship with the game, since it is such a bumpy ride. The end-game especially has some terrible areas. Sadly, the game also has pretty mediocre bosses. Where I would usually get excited to fight a challenging, fun boss, these are very few and far between in the base game. The dlc's are better, but they also take a lot of time to beat and get to, sadly. I usually manage to play until after drangleic castle, then go and finish some dlc's and get bored. I already experienced the best parts, and the rest is so frustrating that I drop the game and the character, then start another one after some time. Other souls games usually get better as you progress, with the best bosses, gear and gameplay hidden at the end. At least Bloodborne, Sekiro and DS3 are this way. DS1 has some great bosses througout, but I usually only finish the three lords, go to the dlc and never return to beat Izalith, since it is so frustrating. Sadly, DS2 has only few of such exciting parts, and most of them are in the dlc's, and none in the second half of the base game. Basically, DS 2 is izalith with parts of fun places scattered throughout. So at least for me, DS2 has some special moments, but is by far the worst and most frustrating; the difficulty, gameplay, world design and bosses are of the lowest quality in the series. But it is special enough for me to always come back.
