Its a decent game, its just poorly made compared to da1 and ds3. Its sloppy, the movement was terrible and most of the bosses were very bad. Pair that with the completely unfair areas between and hype before release...it just made a negative userbase.

Dark souls 2 would have been far better received if it wasn't a soul name and named something else. It failed to achieve the quality and success of ds1 and in it's attempt to fit in the series in contradicts lore presented in 1 and 3. If it was named something else nobody would compare it to ds1 that much and it's sad because it has some very good aspects.

Vendrick and Aldia have to be my favorite characters in the entire series. Their stories are completely interlinked with the player. The only difference is that their story tragically ended while still being told, and they refused to accept the outcome. It's extremely touching. They're maxed out players who beat the game and were so hurt that there's nothing left to do that they kept wandering the lands for answers, which in a lot of cases the player actually does. They would just be bosses in the other games, not such deep characters. In the other games, you see many of the bosses perservere after death, but you don't get to familiarize with their struggles, at least not to this extent. Here you encounter the brothers after death, clinging to their habits, which you as the player can confirm are consistent with their past because the game does a good job showing the passage of time and showing how long they've repeated their behaviors. They're so determined in death that you don't feel cheated out of seeing their past, but you also don't feel a palpable disconnect between you and them. The game's endings confirm that their stories started out just like yours. You can chose the path of the King, or the path of the Scholar, in the end, but as for their past, you just PLAYED it. The gameplay really completes the story and it's actually incredible storytelling. As King of Drangleic, who are your Throne Watcher and Defender? Lucatiel and Bashful Ray. Who are your main guards, the left and right hands? Vengarl and Benhart. Who is your queen? Shanalotte is. You have a kingdom, and you have all the things Vendrick and Aldia had.

Great comment. I've always felt that DS2 felt the most personal of any of the souls games. The characters and there stories and motivations were much more clear to the player than in previous entries, and I'm my opinion it drove home the whole 'everlasting cycle' theme that DS3 was trying to show in a much more nuanced way.

dark souls story is pretty tragic when you know what its about. demons were pretty much driven out of their home and taken advantage of n what not and you, the player, get coerced into destroying them by some guise of being the "chosen undead" to save everyone. YOU are the villain in dark souls. NOT the hero. unless you ya know, pick another ending lol. i think dark souls is the most like the berserk manga for sure. once i watched a vid that explained dark souls story i was like "wait thats the one plotline is berserk wtf" lol.

@@Thebrotherscode Playing through DS2 right now in pursuit of the crazy rings (Exhalted and Conqueror, just got my 12 Rotten/Nito souls for the shrine of winter)...but anywho, I've got almost 500 hours into DS2 and you still taught me some new lore, I never realized that the lost sinner is pyromancer egil, makes sense since all the great souls are two-in-one's, I also never realized that Mytha was (Or could be) the wife of the Prince come King of Alken pissed at the princess of Venn for their undying love... Also, I began my quest for the two rings with a bit of headcanon...The two rings have the "Hidden" effect, almost seeming to make your character start to disappear from the game world, and as the two most difficult challenges the game offers...once completed, the player has finished the game and will "Break the cycle" by turning the game off and moving on to the next... I also had an interesting thought while watching when it comes to the aspects of Manus...Vendrick refers to Nashandra as, "One of the Father of the Abyss' spawn, that confounded quintessence of humanity." The word quintessence and the way it is used fascinates me. There are two different definitions which can be used, a "Highly concentrated essence" referring to Manus, or the more common use in ancient mythology, "The fifth of the five essences thought to construct the world: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Divinity." Nashandra, Alsana, Nadalia, Elana...I'd guess Manus is the 5th and thus purest form. But it made me think of the representations of the aspects. Nashandra/Want, Alsana/Fear, Elana/Spite, Nadalia/Wrath, creating manus, all the dark aspects of humanity...not sure about the exact representations, but love the writing in all of the games...sorry to ramble, but the whole franchise is so dang intricate and well crafted. Add in an addictive gameplay loop and I just can't ever really put them down...oh well, such is the curse of life...the curse of want...

The flame kept being linked so much that the time between cycles grew shorter and shorter. As you burn things in, say, a kiln or oven, ash accumulates. Raime is Artorias Reincarnated in the new Cycles. You literally find Artorias sword near Raime. The game gives that much detail to it that it tells you the sword does nothing unless you wield it with your left hand, and when you do it does 2 of Artorias special attacks. The difference between Artorias in the first Cycle and Raime in this Cycle is that Artorias was corrupted by the abyss unwillingly while Raime embraced it willingly. So poetic

If we're ignoring the Old Dragonslayer (which is probably more of an imitation ratehr than Ornstein himself) Velstadt could easily be Ornstein. It's said in a few item descriptions that Ornstein and Artorias had a kind of rivalry, and Velstadt and Raime had become rivals at some point, which led to the fight between the two that led to Raime leaving for Brume Tower, so the reincarnation theory does make sense. Amazing video! I've always felt that Dark Souls 2 story/lore is so underrated by the fanbase. The idea that no matter what you choose you are doomed to be stuck inside the cycle of light and dark was very interesting to me. DS2 focused more on the curse itself rather than the lighting of the bonfire. Then DS3 took a step back in my opinion and focused again on the lighting of the first flame until the DLCs where I felt it kinda rushed the breaking of the cycle.

You know what I don't like about it, is that the world in DS2 should have been DS3, while DS3 should have been DS2. With how much DS3 has so many location call backs to DS1 it was jarring, as if there wasn't so many kingdoms and history in between. Dark Souls 3 should have had a world more akin to Dark Souls 2, so that you understood that so much time has passed. The Ringed City at the end of the world and the dreg heap would have that much more impact, a place from the beginning, a final call back to the first age of fire. The world in DS3 was perfect for the in-between, it has enough of the old world that you could see that time has passed but it was already being buried and changed. That's just what I think anyway. The DS3 we got was more like fan service. Eh I still loved playing all 3 though so whatever.

Choosing the Throne of Want is not choosing to link the First Flame, it is choosing to take on the burden of the True Monarch, to be the one that will decide _what_ to do with the Throne and by extension, the First Flame as well. That is because in the original version of the game, there was only one ending choice. "You, who link the fire, you, who bear the curse… Once the fire is linked, souls will flourish anew, and all of this will play out again. *It is your choice…To embrace, or renounce this…* Great Sovereign, take your throne. *What lies ahead, only you can see."* - Shanalotte ending narration Both open endings of DS2 gives us something no other Souls game does, true choice to imagine the ending of our character. If I think my BotC fulfilled their duty and became a Lord of Cinder, then they did. If I think my BoTC choose the Throne to "renounce" their duty and snuff out the flame to become a Dark Lord, then that is a possibility too. If I think my BotC took those Souls and built a new kingdom in Drangleic dedicated to worshiping the true divine Trinity, the 3 little pigs of Majula, no one can tell me that's not a possible ending. Once the doors on the Throne close, "what lies ahead [for my BotC], only [I] can see." The Walk Away from the Throne ending gives us even more freedom to imagine the ending for our BotC, free of the burden of being the True Monarch. In walking away, perhaps I returned home to my family or used my near immortality and acquired power to conquer the world outside Drangleic, anything is possible.

2:00:44 I think it's actually the Bearer of the Curse's triumph over Sir Alonne because of the Last Giant boss fight. If the Last Giant truly is the Giant Lord and he recognizes you when he sees you then it confirms that you weren't living someone's memory but actually going back in time just like the Chosen Undead did in Oolacile (throught differents means). If it wasn't the Bearer of the Curse doing the act but rather he relieving someone's memory in the past, then the Last Giant wouldn't recognize you neither Captain Drummond would say "You are not one of our soldiers. And I don't take you for a mercenary." But then again I have no idea how the Ashen Mist Heart works so...
@LavosYT
@LavosYT 2 жыл бұрын
That's the most likely explanation, that the Ashen Mist Heart sends you back to the actual events from the past - but you already did whatever happened there. So you're the one who killed the Giant Lord and the one who killed Alonne before his armor and weapon were brought back to Brume Tower. Chancellor Wellager also mentions that you're the one who slayed the Giant Lord.

Dark souls 2 is my favorite of the Dark souls trilogy. Maybe because it was my 1st From Software game, but its felt so removed from the familiar narrative of Dark souls 1 & 3. It removed itself from the overall theme of the player character sparking the next age and instead went on to tell a separate concept of existing outside of the cycle; a very intriguing concept never thought possible within the realm of the Dark souls universe. It stands on its own, and really shows how many cycles the lands of Dark souls went through until they could finally move into the Next Age. Dark Souls 2 depicted just how much suffering humanity endured in the Dark Souls universe, clinging on the small possibility they could finally transition to the next Age. From Software has been making the best games I've experienced in the past decade, really grateful to be alive to play them.

From the Dark Souls Trilogy, I started them with playing Dark Souls III first, and then I played this game Dark Souls II next, and I fell in love with this game more than Dark Souls III. After I spent my time lost in Dark Souls II, I then ended by playing Dark Souls and after playing the entire trilogy backwards, I still loved Dark Souls II the most. There’s just something about this game that connects with me and many others that love it. “We must be Feeble Cursed Ones”

If you have the time to play them you should try to get over the patience part of them. The games do require some basic skills but not much, and they aren't that hard as long as you pay attention to things. If you play the games you may end up gaining patience or outlooks that you can carry with yourself out of the games. The interesting world and items and designs are things that you may find to help you through the patient parts as well. Sometimes the only thing that helped me push through a boss was wanting to know what was behind the fog wall it was guarding

It's very interesting to see people make the same mistake as those from generations prior, without even knowing the Name of who came before, that's something I never could've guessed from just seein or playing the games themselves. And I didn't expect to feel so strongly towards the Ivory King, that man was an absolute Gigachad, so hearing he ultimately fell to what he tried to stop actually upset me a bit 😞

100% couldn't agree more. It's very telling that humanity just refused to learn the lessons from past generations. In our hubris we think we won't make the same mistakes as our ancestors because "look how much we've grown! Look how much we've changed!" when in the grand scheme of things we are wired the same way as our ancestors from just 2300 years ago compared to the what, 100,000 years when we reunited after the iceage.
