Dark souls 3 - Abyss Watchers Full Orchestral Cover/Remix

This was a huge project for me as I didn´t have any midi file or sheets available. So it took me a good 3 hours to figure out the sheets of the entire song (Phase 1 and 2) by ear... What really confused me at first is, that even tho the chords are changing, the bass always plays a low F, which made me first believe there is no changes in chords at all (especially in the first phase), which was a false assumption. The 4 chords all just contained a F and she kept it as rootnote through phase 1. What really motivated me to start this project is that Yuka used VSTs for most tracks and not a real orchestra and choir like in Bloodborne. So I finally could have a good comparison on how I could compete trying my best with my VSTs. Of course there is no way I can beat the original... It´s written by a stellar composer with lots of experienced, mixed and mastered by real sound engineers (which I can´t afford) and it has real elements, such as a real Singer, where I had to use samples.

8Dio Lacrimosa (Male Choir and Choir sustain in Phase 2)
8Dio Insolidus (Female Ah Legato Lines)
8Dio Jenifer Solo Vocal (towards the end for the high notes)
8Dio Age (for the Orchestral Chimes (Gongs)
8Dio Majestica for the Cymbal scratches
8Dio Century Brass (only for the Muted Trumpets)
Project Alpha and Keepforest Trailer Pack for the Low Booms
AudioImperia Jaeger (Alto Vocal for the entire song)

However I´m very happy with the outcome! I think it´s one of my best projects. It was very hard for me to fill the Low Frequency range, as the original only had a few low Booms every 4th and a Bass playing a Staccato every Beat...no brass at all beside that muted trumpet...at first I had problems to get a full sound, as in the first phase only the male choir is singing. But when I put decapitator (a Saturation Plugin) on the male choir, it finally started to sound decent. This project took me about 30 hours to finish.

It used to be so recognizable, when you saw those pointed steel helmets you knew what was up. And once you fight them they're simply an infighting remnant of their former infamy. The best boss fight ever in dark souls is found in arguably the worst game.

The Abyss Watchers fight isn't a big dumb beast (or a big intelligent one) nor is it a god or super powerful individual. It's a legion of men fighting eachother eternally, you're killing them so they don't kill eachother until the end of time. At the end of the day it's a battle amongst soldiers, men doing their duty. You linking the fire, and those soldiers who've been consumed by the abyss and no longer can.

The Abyss Watchers are placed perfectly in the game. As individually they are not strong enough to even handle an unkindled of ltttle renown which would make them a poor lord of cinder. And yet their undeath and great numbers are what allowed them to wage a long and bloody war against the Abyss and its abominations. When you come face to face with the watchers, they've already done most of the work for you. All our champion of ash need face are these dregs of a once mighty legion. They still fulfilled their vows in a way, should they cut down their brothers and sisters the ashen one need only claim their cinders to banish the dark.

Wow! What a cover! As a Dark Souls fan I think you really nailed home the feeling that the Abyss Watchers theme gives off without straying to far from the original sound. Maybe you should try to cover Blackflame Friede or Slave Knight Gael at some point? I think both would sound wonderful.

Thanks alot. Yea I will think about it, tho It´d be hard nailing the cold breathing ambient sfx in the sister Friede one as a male I guess and without it, it might sound too empty. Right now I´m working on a few other projects, but it´s not unlikely I´ll go for more Fromsoft stuff soon
