As someone who finished this game several times, this song always gives the feeling of being inside a mother's womb. At first it's very peaceful but the music gets gradually tense as it comes to the ending (the character's birth) and the bell tolls adding to the tension. One small detail that I just realized about this song is that you hear the bells 9 times during one loop (I'm stating this because it's an extended version of the original ost and it plays twice here). I find this very interesting as the sound of the bells feel so uncomfortable like they are a countdown for your character to face the dark, unforgiving world of dark souls. And as everybody knows a baby has to stay 9 months inside their mother's womb. I don't necessarily believe this was intentional by the composers yet it's such a cool detail that I didn't see anyone else talk about so I had to write this.

Not only is the game extremely difficult and beautiful at the same time, but the music too is both beautiful to listen to and somewhat "difficult": it's not the same old 4/4, instead it adds a little shift in the rhythm with the 5/4. Very well done.
@RuseOfTheMetacarpi10 жыл бұрын
9/4, actually
@Froggerazer10 жыл бұрын
RuseOfTheMetacarpi That's right, I just wanted to be clear that it's not 3+3+3 (as if it was made of triplets), but 5+4.
@RuseOfTheMetacarpi10 жыл бұрын
Well, if you refer to each harp note in the consistent arpeggiation pattern as the reference beat for the meter denominator it would actually have to be 9/8 where each phrase cycles, because those are eighth note steps relative to the tempo. 9/4 also works if you want to count beats at half the rate of the harp tones (at the actual tempo, which is a bit less than 120 quarter note beats per minute) but it's tricky because the downbeat gets displaced to the upbeat relative to the pattern's feel after the fifth quarter note of the measure because of the odd number of eighth notes in the actual pattern.
@Froggerazer10 жыл бұрын
I know, I wrote a music a piece with the 5+4 scheme and thought of it as 9 on 8, but then people immediately think of 3+3+3 and get confused, so maybe writing 9/4 is the better way... I'm actually conflicted about whether to use the 9/8 or 9/4, one seems somewhat more correct, the other more "immediately understandable".

I came here so I could use it for a surreal horror tabletop game I have been working on for months. It's a little inspired by Dark Souls. It's not super hard or punishing, but they can lose currency in the same way players can lose souls. So in that sense players can sort of "lose everything", but I don't expect them to die very often. But in some scenarios death can inadvertently lead to new areas since their bodies are carried away and reassembled somewhere safer, the beginning involves a player trying to struggle out of a wheelchair (they're bound by barbed wire) as it slowly slides backwards into a glowing red abyss. If the player willingly jumps in afterwards though, they'll die, but nanobots will carry their body to a unique hidden area that's otherwise hard to find, which can also lead to an in accessed area which also has a door that only opens from one side ala dark souls (a chair propped against a knob prevents access to a stairwell from one side until its pulled out.

I couldn't agree more. Words cannot describe the feels this song evokes in me. I feel sad, as the violin and chimes seem to resonate a finality, like the embers of a dying fire, a conclusion has been reached, however not in your favor. The end of an era, and submission into darkness. But, there is a faint glimmer of hope, as streams of light pierce the darkness of your cell in the Undead Asylum, and there is a chance that maybe, just maybe, you can defeat the forces of darkness and restore hope to a world where none remains. You are all that stands in the way of all that is good in the world that remains, and those who seek to destroy what is left. If any of that even makes any sense

Alas, they knew not what dwelled beneath the scared visage, the weathered plate he adorned. The etchings of blade and bone alike scrawled themselves a tale of struggle and pain across the breast. Boots scuffed and gloves worn from a tireless journey, shield scorched black from vile flames and belt loose from countless tools and trinkets passing through it's loops. His helmet, cold, still, and stalwart, acts as a visage for him, an identity made of steel, known only as what he wears. This Knight, this traveling soul, despite his journey, his forging through fire and despair, is reprised by such a beautiful Melody. One of calm and stoicism. It seems to suit him well.

This is my absolute favorite piece of music from the Dark Souls series, and one of my favorites out of all the games I've ever played.

The best souls game ever. We need a ds4 with this style of design. Just a masterpiece. The lore, the detail, the feelings...art

this reminds me of the first time I played dark souls. this theme made it feel so magical. don't laugh at me if I cry from nostalgia. I just want to replay all those good memories

I like how dark souls starts you off so calmly before actually dipping you into the dark souls experience. Love the start of this game ❤

If we can get one more souls game with the music and storytelling from Dark Souls 1, the PvP from Dark souls 2, and the PvE gameplay and boss fight experience from Dark Souls 3, it would be one of the best games ever created.

One reason I’ll always love ds1 the best, is because of how calming the music is, this track, firelink shrine theme, pricilla boss theme, ash lake, daughter of chaos, and even gwyns boos theme. I remember when I was in school, I’d boot up this game and rest at ash lake bonfire, just to have the music playing in the background, while i did some homework.

I don't necessarily like this game or any of these games but when I was making my character here, I just had a thousand mile stare from this song. Puts you in a trance state.

Had this playing while I was creating a character model in blender. Somehow didn’t know what this was from, until my older brother came in and told me. I still remember being FRUSTRATED when I was creating my model, as it wasn’t looking exactly like how I envisioned….until I stopped to listen to this and calmed down

Gosh, this game is a huge piece of history and I hope it remains that way. I'm 14 and I first started playing early 2019 and I hope the new generations continue to play this game. Something about Dark Souls is very different than newer games, and it seems that a lot of newer games are slowly loosing their charm.

I love this song. So beautiful but also kind of haunting and dream like. Never thought character creation music would be my favorite track in a dark fantasy game.
