Old comment: if you play this and you want to grind, get the Covenant of Champions. It turns off the respawn limit. Just know enemies can do more damage if you do, and your weapons degrade faster [when the covenant is on].

I really don't know what to think about this game. The first 15 hours grabbed me but after that it just felt like it was going through the motions. The areas became generic (apart from that dragon palace, that was awesome), the bosses weren't very interesting and the enemies just felt like sword humanoid guy no.4 except this time he uses magic. Compared to dark souls where I wanted to do new game plus, with 2 I just couldn't be bothered. Although I do appreciate some greatly improved match makings and ui interfaces, this isn't as good as it's predecessor.

NG+ is a wholly different game. Apparently its what FROM designed Dark Souls 2 to be. You'd be making a major mistake skipping out on NG+.

TaelRiverine I disagree. I've been playing through NG+ and the game has a lot really terrible core problems that keep it from ever coming close to the masterpiece Demon's Souls or Dark Souls was. Without going through every detail as why I believe this game failed to capture the point of the original, there is a reviewer who managed to capture the words splendidly. If you're ever interested, look up Mathewmatosis and his critique on the game. He says what I was yelling at my monitor the latter half of the game.

SgtMagnumb well, it doesn't just make the enemies harder. It adds things to the game, some of them nice surprises, but nothing that fixes the core failings of the game or even comes close to making up for it. The game wasn't awful, but it was deeply flawed.

you can get human status by playing coop and beating a boss or fulfilling duty otherwise. Later in the game there is a way to get human status as well, and there's a ring that can be repaired to keep it. I keep hearing that the limited number of effigies is some kind of problem, but these other mechanisms will gain you the same effect. I have used a grand total of 2 effigies so far because of the coop->humanity system alone.

Dark Souls 2 is mechanically better only in theory. In execution it's actually worse, since the game isn't properly designed around those mechanics, while the previous games were.

Technically the fast travel isn't a new edition to the series it was in number 1 after you collect the lord vessel around half way through the game :)

I would rather have no fast travel if it meant that the game could be a wonderfully constructed, interconnected world. I don't think the trade off in world design is worth it. I hate it when video game worlds are disjointed.

Be patient. Stay calm. Accept death as a part of the process. Consult a Wiki and the online community when unsure. Don't be afraid to ask for help by summoning other players. Try to sleep when you can. The rush you get is like a drug, it keeps you playing. Finally, be realistic about your time constraints. These games take a serious investment in time and they will consume you're attention. Hope that helps. Cheers.

Do it. Took me awhile but once I beat it. Its was worth it. Truly a showcase of masterclass from a developer that wants you to find out on your own. You'll never know until you play it and wonder off. Experimentation is key in this game. Played all three could only beat this one though.

How is this 9.5? Maybe 7.5. Or 8 at max. But to me it is just another dungeon crawler. Tons of grinding and a boring story. This would've been interesting 20 years ago... And the visuals are horrible.

personally i think dark souls 2 might be a bit easier than the first one, but its hard to say which one is better, but if you have never played a dark souls game i would still recomend playing the first one first :)

I've played 100's of hours of both, and they are both GREAT, and they are both HARD in their own ways. Dark Souls the first is probably better to start with, mainly because there are many upgraded things in DS2 that when you go back to play the first you will really miss. Either way if your new to the series I would really suggest starting with demon souls on ps3 if possible and then moving to DS and DS2!! you will NOT regret it!!

dark souls 2 has a better learning curve for new players, its also longer. darksouls 1 has more creative bosses. also the world itself is genius in darksouls 1, while darksouls 2 can feel a little bit stiched together like the reviewer said, but both have still amazing places. just take a pick they are both awesome games and you cant go wrong with either one, they dont continue a story or something so its not like you are going to spoil yourself if you play 2 before 1.

Enjoying the game but I wish it was as good as the first game. Some of the environments are dull compared to lordran and the bosses are easily forgettable. Still decent, just not as good as dark souls or demon souls

***** you say to the person above thay you respect their opinion but at the end of your comment you then contradict yourself by saying 'take it from me' as if due to you having spent over 2,000 hours on the first two of the series you somehow know something that he/she doesn't? I agree that Dark Souls 2 is alot more polished compared to the original however as much as I like it unfortunately it isn't as hard as the original and I must be honest a large majority of bosses are lacking in the more ambitious department there not as challenging as Dark Souls original bosses like Ornstein/Smough & Knight Artorias. The game excels in some department but then also feels like its taken a step back in others. I must say mind it is an awesome sequel especially considering alot of games released this year have turned out to be extremely disappointing however as you mention everyone is intitled to their own opinion and everyone will have a preferred game of the soul series.

Because the souls games allow you to choose from mechanics. Start as a spell caster, always use the ring of life protection, etc. The game is always a nice challenge, but there are ways to make it easier. Such as fighting with a shield and using lock on.
