Just defeated the Bell Gargoyle and rang the first bell. So far the game is very difficult, but man I don't think I've played a more exciting game this generation. Reminds me of why I loved games as a kid.

Don't get me wrong now, but how did they give the story a rating of 8.5? I mean, the story is worth a 10 no doubt, but by the time this review was done people hardly knew a thing of the lore. It was much later that people actually began to unpuzzle this poetic storytelling (ENB or VaatiVidya to name a few), but at the start of the game it didn't seem to be much of it.

You're probably right. I guess I am just surprised that they figured that out. A lot of other reviewers actually completely removed the "story-category" from the reviewing, since it wasn't so obvious.

cause the in game story isn't worth a 10 a 6 at best. the lore itself isn't enough to warrant it as a great story

Somewhat. It leaves you pretty much completely on your own in terms of navigation (being able to access late-game areas early on without any signs is toeing the line), and you'll have to view detailed information on items and stats in the menu before you really understand how to manage your character effectively. It tells you the controls and that's about it. For those willing to get accustomed to this though, you've got a fantastic journey ahead of you.

Boss wise it works like this. The area Boss in the host’s world must still be alive in order for a host to either summon allies or to be invaded by another player. A client can still be summoned even if the client has already defeated their own area boss.

I had the same feeling at first. But as you keep going, you discover these nuances and hidden treats all over the place. The story isn't as explicit as most others, but it's certainly deep and very engaging. You just need to give it a chance.

Dark souls reminds me a lot of the older Castlevania games, in the way you have to memorize and remember where the enemy's are to formulate a strategy for defeating them. Both are great, and both have amazing replay value.

just like in the real world. Just because you have to follow roads doesn't mean you aren't free to go anywhere. Having open fields/wilderness of GTA games or The Elder Scrolls doesn't mean you are more free.

I still kind of wish this game had some sort of map, even if it was a super vague hand drawn map. Unlike something like Super Metroid, it feels a lot harder to remember where the heck you're supposed to go next. I've had to look up a FAQ a couple times unfortunately after just running around for hours. Then again I'm also terrible at this game.

Did you play the game past the beginning? Because what makes dark souls challenging is the immense diversity and constant strategic planning against new types of enemies not being "hit hard". In fact you can build your character to take a lot of hits that's not what makes dark souls hard. And there is definitely a story. It may be nebulous but its there and i find it very intriguing, but it doesn't hand it to you on a silver platter. You have to pay attention, read, and think.

"...while this barrier has been lowered considerably from it's famously difficult predecessor..." Demon's Souls is my favorite game ever and I play through every single 'New Game+' with ease. I had one character focused on magical attributes and the other focused on physical attributes. I would have had the Platinum Trophy (100% completion) but I became tired of looking for stones to craft the last sword I needed so I didn't. Regardless, my number one favorite game of all time.

Dark Souls, like old school games of my youth, doesnt take you by the hand on a walk through the park. No, dark souls is so much more, pitting you against almost impossible odds. Sometimes you tell yourself that its bullshit, thats its impossible, only to think back on it at school or work, planning another strategy! DkS makes you learn from your mistakes, everything is well earned and gratifying! It's without a doubt one of my fav games of all time and a true masterpiece of modern gaming!

I can't believe I missed on this series. I just tried out Dark Souls and it's one of the best games I've ever played. Mainly because of how difficult it is, and it gives you that nostalgic gaming of back then. Games that have given me this feeling are mostly the old games like Megaman, or PS2 era like DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden. Though forgiving enough, and hits that sweet spot between frustration and fun. Just perfect.

While the comment you replied to is rude to a game, you and others don't have any right to judge who is a "real" gamer or not based on your preferences. I also play games for almost 2 decades now, and don't like Dark Souls. I don't say it's a bad game, it's just not my flavor. That doesn't make you a real gamer. Nor does it make me a real one. A gamer is ANYONE who spends his or her free time regularly playing video games, not someone who fits someone's personal tastes.

There aren't any missions in Dark Souls. Once you reach Firelink Shrine, the "hub world", for lack of a better term, you can explore. And that's all you do, you explore and discover. Talk to NPCs often. If you want to know, the first task is to ring the Bells of Awakening. How you get to them, i won't spoil.

The stairs are your friend. He's a pain in the ass, but run up the stairs, dodging his first blow. kill the dogs as they chase you, the balance on the stairs (be careful you can fall off the edge on the far right). When the demon falls, just drop attack him and run back up the stairs. He's tough (at first), but if you can make it up the stairs, you should be good.

Just keep playing, you'll get in the hang of it. Also, if enemies seem like they are way too hard they might be just that. You should try out a different area if this happens, Best place to go to first (after you've escaped the Undead Asylum) is Undead Burg. Also, always keep an eye on your environment, it often gives you hints of what's to come. Good luck, and have fun!

It has an extremely engaging story. It just doesn't force feed it to you. If you dig deep, there is a huge lore behind it. That is why people love it so much. You are wrong about the story.

After you kill the Gaping Dragon, head down to Blighttown. Reach the bottom of Blighttown and walk across the poisonous swamp to reach Quelaag's Domain. Kill Quelaag and ring the second bell. I can tell you how everything else about the game will go, but really, what's the fun in that?
@ColteeYT
@ColteeYT 11 жыл бұрын
The story in Dark Souls isn't openly explained. To dig deep into the lore and plotline you have to read item descriptions, hear every last sentence of the npcs, piece the world appearence and characters toghether to recreate what is probably one of the most believeable plot lines for a fantasy game ever. So yes, it does have a good story.

@ColteeYT
@ColteeYT 11 жыл бұрын
The story is only engaging if you want it to be. This game doesn't hold hands and carry you through it, you have to take the walk alone. Read item descriptions, speculate over the meaning of every little detail and event you'll find. If you do that, you get the most well-crafted world and story in video game history, in my opinion.

Well, you can get it on whatever platform you want, I recommend either an Xbox or PS3, to save the hassle of having to deal with hackers and framerate issues, but yeah it's really almost the same formula in terms of gameplay, while the combat is a bit more different it's still the same enjoyable experience as Demon's souls

Well I'm a bit behind and have only just managed to finish Demon's Souls. Took me forever but it was so satisfying. How similar is this game in terms of gameplay and difficulty? And can someone honestly tell me whether to get it on Xbox or PS3 if there is any difference.

Thanks :-) , but what I mean't was the cut-scene. I thought that cut-scene was from the game... if u get what I mean. Example: when u fight the gargoyle u see a scene first then u fight it. So if this cut-scene was from the game where do u go to trigger it? I've never seen it in the game. So I guess it was just from the promotional video, in that case it has no place in this review and Gametrailers shudn't of showed it because its not really part of the game.

I wouldn't say that only "real gamers" play Dark Souls. Personally I enjoy this and Demons Souls--I like starting off as an inexperienced player and becoming very skilled at the game, that's a great feeling, but not all find that fun. In the end, the point of a game is to have fun and some people don't find this fun. You're a "real gamer" if you play games and enjoy them, not just if you play certain types of games.
@ColteeYT
@ColteeYT 11 жыл бұрын
Dark souls has 2 endings and the only thing that causes one to be triggered is what you choose to do after you beat the final boss. There are no conditions to meet to get an ending rather an another.

beautiful game, but i stopped playing it because of one annoying mechanic: if you die you sometimes have to walk a long way and destroy every enemy again and again. this is just a time sinker. i really enjoyed the difficulty and loved trying the bosses and greater monsters, but to walk every way again and again as a punishment for dying just sucks and bored the living crap out of me :-/ If i died against some mighty evil I wanna do it again and I don't care if I need hundreds of tries, but i wanna do it short after my death and not 5 Minutes later
@LeinadCasey
@LeinadCasey 10 жыл бұрын
This game is definitely not for the casual or impatient gamer. If you grew up playing nothing but platformers, collecting every last piece of a collectable as you could, then you're more lenient on the punishment of death (As I was). -- (Dismiss this as a blow to you, because I don't know your life or gaming history, not my intention to belittle your opinion, just an example). For me, I only can't stand the walks back if I die again on my way to collect my dropped souls. This game just does something to you man. You yell and scream "That's bullshit!" more than the average CoD douche. But when you beat the boss or find out the rotation of npcs and dispose of them easily, you feel like you actually accomplished something. And that is something I haven't felt from a game since the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and previous to those, generations. Like you said, beautiful game. it really is.

LeinadCasey i feel a sense of accomplishment when i beat boss's in DMC3, in this game not so much i feel like its never by skill but rather "ok attack when the boss doesn't attack thats not skill thats just using your brain. it never feels like a hard game when the only thing you have to fear is not getting hit

Dont worry about that. The factions are optional and mainly for fun PvP. New players should play the game offline for their first run through, at least until they get comfortable. You will still get to summon NPC help if you are human but you are safe from invasions. You can also play online, but just dont revive to human. That way you are always safe from an invasion and you can still help others fight bosses to gain free souls and no death consequence. Pick this game up! Its cheap!

It doesn't tell you everything and honestly Demon's Souls is way better in that aspect. It tells you enough to get by though and you learn a lot of stuff by experimenting and that's pretty fun. If you don't know how to do something, you could always just look it up. So, yeah, the explaining isn't perfect, but it's still pretty good.

This is my all time favorite game with Demon's Souls close behind it. I think that nearly every aspect of it is close to perfect and everything is outstanding. The lore, the gameplay, the world, bosses, NPC's, areas. All of them seem to fit in perfectly with the game. My score for it is 10/10.

Allright so other players online can write these messages to either troll you or help you out. Like they can put one down saying treasure chest ahead. Or Look out or something like that. Just think of it as other people who are playing the game trying to help you. And when your human you can summon people who want to help you. So say if your stuck on a really hard boss then summon two random people to help. Or you can get summoned to help and get some souls and humanity as reward

Indeed! The amount of lore is actually quite staggering. It's just very easy to miss if you don't read item descriptions and actually pay attention to little things. Especially on stuff the NPCs say and do. In short, Dark Souls' story/lore is like a jigsaw puzzle that has 1000+ pieces. :D

You don't technically need internet to play the game, but it's better if you have it cause then you can do co-op and invade other people's worlds, or get invaded by hackers who one shot you. Anyway, the first Bell of Awakening is up in the Undead Parish. Move through the Undead Burg and get past the Hellkite Dragon, then locate the Bell Tower in the Parish and slay the Bell Gargoyles. The second bell is in Quelaag's Domain. Go through the Depths and kill the Gaping Dragon. Next comment...

as someone who gets frustrated by this game often, i have way to calmyorself i developed after getting my ass hadned to me: when dying way too much, just remember and tell yourself that death is a full on gameplay machenic in this game.

I love the look of Dark Souls, it reminds me of a SNES game. Don't mistake this for trolling, me saying it has shit graphics. I'm not saying that, I love the graphics. They have that odd, sort of murky darkness about them, like Castlevania did on the SNES. The atmosphere is amazing, it evokes the feeling that you're playing an old school hardcore gamer's game.

Not picking on you, but when I leave troll comments on random game videos, everyone says this. I have nothing related to Call of Duty on my profile, nor do I play it. So out of research: why do people say this? Aka you.

It's only $20 now and well worth it. You will be very frustrated at first but once you learn how to play it's awesome. I got it a couple weeks ago and i'm hooked. You can find a ton of videos on KZbin with tips. The #1 tip IMO ...FARM! lol Take advantage of what the game gives you.

the gameplay is 100% the best ever, i wish the main story was a bit better, they develope it very well, but i don't like the story itself. Definitively my favorite game of all time

dude ones you get the basic control, the rest of the game is easy. damage is the only real thing to worry about, blocking and dodging are the only essentials, the game isn't bad but its just not that hard. it becomes a basic RPG ones you get a good build. actually a story should be handed to you on a silver platter cause i was losing interest in it all together. no character development or reason for me to give a fuck about anyone.

Coltee is right. I think the problem you're encountering is that you like a game to hold your hand when you go through it. There's nothing wrong with that, but Dark Souls really isn't that kind of game. Perhaps the series is just not for you.
