Naw I'm pretty sure the giants in Dark Souls 2 are an entirely different species to the ones in 1 and 3. The giants of 1/3 have actual faces are more human looking and they just leave a corpse on death (hell there is even giant skeletons) the ones in two are more like plant creatures.

As a Swede, I can say that you are spot on with your history of Umeå and the Birch Trees. That is actually what happened, alltough, the trees were planted after the fire, acting as a "fire gate" or "fire stopper". So the city actually burned down in the fire and when they rebuildt the city, they made the streets wider and planted the trees to stop ev fire, so that this would never happen again. And they chose birch tree because they grow well in city environment and acts as solid fire wood, meaning that they can burn for a long time before turning to ash or spread the fire. Very good pronounciations of swedish words btw!

The giant from Undead Settlement drops Gough's ring and protects white birch trees, who are said to be born from pieces of Dusk's catalyst (I don't remember in which item it says that). Gough and little Dusk were both at Oolacile and the same time. My beliefs are that Dusk and Gough had some type of friedly relationship. I can think on two possibilities: 1. The giant in the Settlement is Gough, protecting the remains of his little friend dusk 2. Gough gave his ring to that giant to protect the trees when he dies.

I've always been curious if 'leveling up' is only for humans or if any living thing could do it and if it's the dark soul that allows humans to become eventually stronger than the gods in this setting
@jacobp.4593
@jacobp.4593 8 жыл бұрын
I think the species that have a a Link to the Lord Souls can. The way I see it is that Humans (Dark Soul.) Can level up. I think a great example of gaining power from the death, and absorbtion of souls is Ornstein and Smough fight where one gain incrediable strength from absorbing the souls of the other. Another example could be the Abyss Watchers. I think if you took out the 'game mechanic' way of leveling up we would increase our power much the same way. (Note:I am ignoring most of DS2's lore because...its DS2's lore.)

I actually have a theory on this, and its that humans are actually quite bad at it, in every souls game you have to go through someone else, or something else, now of course in dks1 this may simply be game mechanics, but not in 2 and 3, as they require another person, namely a firekeeper, a font of power replicating the original soul of man, meanwhile we have the godly beings like. The nameless king or biggie and smalls who not only gain stature, but power in an instant by "claiming" their allies soul, they don't need to go through anyone, because this is a natural process, and humans can only attempt to emulate it.

I to believe that the giant in the undead settlement is Gough. And by the looks of it, he was enslaved to at some point(you can see the broken chains coming out from his body), but he somehow managed to get free. I don't remember the dialogues at this point very well, but probably he had help from Siegward .

Maybe the giant you find where the blacksmith was in the first game was actually Gough, trying to save the blacksmith from the Aldrich followers enslaving the Giants, giving him his bow when he couldn't go on. And the blacksmith escaped, leaving his smithing coal behind. Just a thought.
@brayachdragonbane7529

The great archer of the undead settlement may be Gough, because the white birch trees were spawned by the dropped staff of young Princess Dusk. the giant will protect you if you have the gifted white branch from the giant (Or the white branch starting item) in your inventory, both of which have special descriptions. Dusk in DS1 was fond and kind to the giant archer Gough (as it is hinted at in gameplay) these two facts in conjunction make pretty good groundwork to say that the giant archer may be Gough or at least a descendant of him. and as Farron is also Darkroot/Oolacil and the archer makes farron considerably more survivable, there is yet another tie. also side note, Xanthous crown is based of an "Ancient mystic creature." the Oolacil mushroom people were skilled in the arts of magic, and the 'crown' looks like a shroom.

One thing I find interesting is that Yhorm has a face, rather than a hole in his head, implying one of two things: he is not the same species as all the other giants we've seen, OR he is the same species as the DS1 and DS3 giants, but the DS2 giants, the ones who become trees, are a totally unrelated species. I think the latter is probably more accurate, considering that DS2's giants are built differently than the ones in the rest of the series. So I think we're dealing with two distinct species, correlated only by their size.
@mitchl6896
@mitchl6896 8 жыл бұрын
I really like that fact about Yhorm. My initial thought was that he's one of the "old breed," and has just managed to escape persecution or enslavement, however he is a "descendent of a conqueror" which could be the giant king, who had the big old hole in the face, so it's hard to say.

Great video, man! I really enjoyed your take on the Giants, mainly because they're a race that is easy to overlook. The fashion at 14:00 is great btw! My question is this though. Why would Gough retire to Oolacile? It's not really a nice place at the moment. Maybe it was even the residents of Oolacile that put the pine resin in his helmet, after he arrived seeking to aide Artorias. Overall though, I loved the video, thank you for some quality content.

@mitchl6896 8 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your feedback. I'm not really sure why he is in Oolacile. I'm honestly surprised that they put his bow in DS3 at all (wielded by the tower giant). Giants don't really seem to be that concerned with the first flame/the dark and whatever, since they don't really "die" the same way that humans do. I might have to revisit giants at some point and see if there's anything new to unearth. Thanks again!

Have you ever thought about making a video about the very unique only female giant found in the DS series? Beyond being rare with a female name, her name is also very different than just about every character. Characters usually never have a normal surname, maybe something like a title or location affiliation but never a proper surname like she has. Also her name doesn't sound like it belongs in a game with a medieval theme, it actually sounds modern like she could be your neighbor than a NPC. I definitely would be interested in hearing your thoughts on that, plus any lore interpretations regarding the giant that's named "Judi Cator"

Don't forget the giant of the undead settlement is a crack shot at helping you, and you can kill him and get Hawkeyes ring, which unlike most rings has the historical characters life and name in the description instead of saying the name is forgotten with time. Which more likely suggest that the giant is Hawkeyes, or is related to him, perhaps as his son. Or daughter? Are there girl Giants?
@followthedmntrainCJ

I always was under the impression from all I've read and watched about the souls series that the Giants were actually from another land and imprisoned and brought to work here as slaves by humans. The ones we see without faces are actually golems recreated after the first giants were brought here with magic to work too. Golems usually don't have faces in mythology and i'm pretty sure you can find evidence of them being golems ins some items which I can't remember which ones. However that doesn't explains much since if you take a look almost EVERY enemy is some kind of giant by themselves, the bosses being the best example. All the knights, the bosses, the demons almost every enemy that are not foot soldiers seems to be of a larger stature. I would love to hear your thoughts about this explaining why everyone seems to be so huge the more powerful they are. I know this could be just a graphic thing to make the beings appear more powerful but I don't find that to be the true since in the Souls series everything is interconnected and not just for the looks. Again, would love to hear some kind of reasoning from yourself on this. One theory I have is that everyone that is of normal stature is descendant from Pigmy and a normal "human" every other are descendant of the former gods and thus larger. I have no idea how to prove that tho but it's an interesting thought.

I would like to make the comment that the Giants of Sens Fortress, of which you showed clips, were also enslaved to guard and maintain the traps there. I would disagree the shift is as drastic as you imply and assert that giants have never been looked on with fondness by humans in the Souls Series. Gough and the Blacksmith are the only two giants who were tolerated by the humans because they provided a service and were presumably protected by Gwyn and his lineage. I do appreciate the amount of work you've put into this video though, some very nice comparisons drawn and lore points examined.

Neat video, and pretty insightful. I would point out that calling Silver Knights humans to relate with Gough's cynicism of humans is... a bit of a stretch. They are almost certainly the same species as or related to the same species as Gwyn. Though that does bring some interesting questions as to where humans came into the story and world if they weren't sane before the discovery of the Dark Soul.

Side note, there was also a big city fire on the same day in a different city, Sundsvall where almost whole city burned down. Luckily for city of Sundsvall was the fact a majority of the buildings were of stone and they never rebuild using wood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ume%C3%A5_city_fire en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1888_Sundsvall_fire

Through my first play through I never killed a single giant because I thought maybe there was a way to make them friendly like the first giant you meet. Sad to know that they really are hostile. :(

I think they mean "so easily forgothen" as in that the others we're so great, that this soul taker seems insignificant to the others. Thus being easily forgotten

That does sound pretty valid, I mean, I've never heard about the Furtive Pygmy actually 'doing' anything once it got the dark soul, it just got it then buggered off.

if there is a connection it might tie in with how some people say the time warp thing within the game and ricard is pre-wolnir then once he kills the carthus kings and makes one crown it makes him into a beast sorta like aldrich turning to slime when devouring men

Is there any connection between how the drang npc enemies right after Pontiff Sulyvan are found in the area with giants, and how you can find the drang set in the cathedral of the deep where one of the giants is cowering?

Most of this is accurate and makes sense. However, Manus isn't the FP. Manus was once human, FP created humans. As well in DS3 it pretty much hands it out to us that the Pygmy Lords together were the FP and not a single one.

Sizes are based on the god's perspective. The giants are bigger than they are while humans and significantly smaller which gave them the title of pygmys. As for Manus, if you recall, any being with many souls become bigger than they normally are. Just take a look at the Witch of Izaleath (she is shown to be a giant amongst her daughters), Manus, 4 kings and Gael (all pgymys). The only one that doesnt become grotesquely big is us.

stopped watching around 6:30 after you got info about Hawkeye's helmet wrong, didn't feel like getting misinformed further. The ones who packed his eye holes with resin did so just before he went into battle, and it made him go blind.

You should have outlined that the difference between Gods and Giants I that those who found potent Lord souls became powerful (Gods), but those who simply found many souls became physically large (Giants).

About the Giants from Dark Souls 2, they are really much different from all others. They even must be an evolutionary stage from the hollowed humans, since we've seen in Dark Souls 3 that Hollows tend to turn their boddies into something like plants with the time and even still move after that. Maybe the giants of Dark Souls 2 may be an example of the nature of the souls by itself too, since their appearence inspires the idea that they are vessels with souls inside, just like the Golens of Vendrik or even the Hollows. The Giants can be some kind of evolved humans that hollowed so much that grew and became trees, also regaining some kind of soul and then became a new species, now understanding a little more about the nature of the soul and how to manipulate it with different vessels.

Oopsie! Someone didn't read the word "average". "Pygmy" applies to a person when the average height of the ethnic group they belong to is unusually low. Every member of that ethnic is a pygmy, even one that happens to be freakishly tall, or none of them are.
@dracorex426
@dracorex426 2 жыл бұрын
As an example: Imagine an ethic group called the fine folks. The average fine folk is 4′6″. Jerry the fine folk is 7′0″. Jerry is still a pygmy. Now imagine the another ethnic group called the pleasant people. The average pleasant person is 6′3″. Bella the pleasant person is only 3′9″. Bella is still not a pygmy.
@dracorex426
@dracorex426 2 жыл бұрын
Basically, the furtive pygmy wasn't an unusually short member of their ethnic group, they were a member of an unusually short ethnic group.

''Its quite refreshing to see this adoration from a HUMAN'' But Andre cant possibly be human, or did humans acquire the power of immortality while I was unaware?
@ISayEssays

It is likely that this iteration of Andre is undead. As he expressly stated that smithing is his sole purpose, he likely has never experienced the negative effects of hollowing. After all the demand for arms and armour is not going away anytime soon in this universe. Bonus fact Andre in an early draft of DS1 was Gwyn's firstborn, and would open the path to the kiln for the chosen undead.
