a.) For the purposes of the challenge I haven't really considered Spells, Catalysts or Talismans to be weapons as such, so you wouldn't have to loot any of them off NPC's, and hence are free to be collected normally. b.) They do count for points so I'll be making sure to take out every NPC invader.

I would have preferred to use the Calamity Ring since it doesn't give you any advantage (like the extra attunement slot the Dusk Crown Ring gives you). But I don't have any means to edit my save files, so I would have had to start the challenge at NG+.

The weapon you start with. Makes choosing your class a little bit more significant, otherwise every character could go grab a pyro flame or a short bow.

Well, choosing sorcrer as starting class makes this run pretty easy, as you don't need to reinforce your catayst and at smth like 20-30 (which you can get pretty early) int you'll be doing decent damage, moreover you'll be getting advantage from dusk crown ring. Second ring you equip might be dark wood grain ring and at this point run is pretty much over. I think this needs some restrictions about spells usage

Dusk crown ring wouldn't work, because they said no damage buffing other than leveling. EDIT: Oops I thought you said crown of dusk.

Can the Leo Ring be worn? It boosts damage, but it technically drops from a boss.

You can take weapons off of defeated Black Phantom NPC's. Butcher Knife, Notched Whip, Barbed Staight Sword etc. are all perfectly legal.

Ive done a similar challange after watching the one-shot boss run,it will be similar to the sword hilt/broken sword run. Not all npc's drop weapons also being base damage will make this interesting to say the least good luck on this

I like this challenge. Even through the rules you can get some of my favorite weapons. Uchigatana and Pharis' bow are all I really need.

It will definitely test your skill against NPCS and bosses.

It genuinely is. The real kicker is not being able to upgrade weapons. Soul Level 1 playthroughs are definitely impressive but equipment matters so much more than your level. Take away the Lightning Reinforced Clubs and such, and you realise just how much you rely on being able to end fights quickly.

Yep, he counts as an NPC invader. The whip isn't a bad idea actually, as that bleed damage would definitely come in handy.

Would you count/allow something like the Balder Side Sword? It's looted from the body of an NPC... but it's an NPC who respawns and isn't important, which is obviously not what you mean exactly or else the no-heal rule would basically mean you can never heal which I don't believe is what you intend.

Nah, it has to be loot from a named non-playable-character. So for example, Shiva of the East counts, but his bodyguard wouldn't since he is nameless. There's a pretty comprehensive list on the wikispaces page if that helps clear up any of the confusion.

I fear not restricting magic will be too powerful. You can start as Sorcerer and get the Oolacile Ivory Talisman and pretty easily kill everyone up to the second half of the game and then get access to stronger magic easily enough. Even more, you'll melee nearly as well as people who go that route due to the lack of useable weapons/bad scaling, and furthermore the Dusk Crown Ring will give you plenty of casts to work with even with low attunement.

It's a great change of pace from just running past enemies to the next boss, and some of the NPC's are really scary to deal with. Definitely not for the feint-hearted, let me know how you get on!

Wouldn't using the calamity ring be the same as using the Dusk Crown ring?

Not in all cases. Sanctus and other heal-over-time methods are only half as effective with the Calamity ring, because each point you get back is worth only half as much. However, if the Calamity ring doesn't apply to some type of damage, like falling or poison, and you're somewhere that has a lot of that (Blighttown?) then it's better for that area. I don't recall if Power Within is affected by Calamity, but it's banned anyway.

Yep, that's viable. After all, Charcoal and Rotten Pine Resin aren't exactly game-breaking. And it's only possible to buy a maximum of 6 Gold Pine Resins.

I see your point, but I didn't want to set down so many restrictions that there was only one viable playstyle to get through the challenge. Besides it would still be difficult. You'd have to put all of your points into Intelligence to max out your damage, since you can't use Bellowing, Crown of Dusk or Red Tearstone. That'd leave you with pretty crappy health, and taking down the DLC bosses would be a problem as they are stupidly formidable against magical damage.
