For those who don't know : - Iridium is a rare metal on earth, but often found in meteorites. - The ferryman at around 2:00 is a reference to Charon. - Rilke wrote a poem called "Falling Stars" ("Weißt du noch: fallende Sterne"), which ends with "while in our hearts we felt safe and secure watching these brilliant bodies disintegrate, knowing somehow we had survived their fall.". - The owl is the guardian of the souls in celtic and egyptian mythology, leading the deads into the afterlife, same as Charon. Might also be a reference to Hegel.

Since my other comments are buried somehwere here 10 years ago I'd add it here: The Rilke reference at 0:47 could also be referencing his "Zweite Elegie" (in the "Duineser Elegien" in English "Duino Elegies") where he speaks of "tödliche Vögel der Seele" ( "deadly *birds of the soul* ") Also: The owl in general symbolizes wisdom (because of its ability to see in the dark) and is associated to Minerva. And Minerva (93) on the other hand is, guess what, also the name of a large asteroid in our solar system.

i was just reading about elements and i stumbled upon Iridium(ir) and it reminded me of this song. and now that i watch the video knowing about the element.. its all clear that it is talking about the k/t event , aka the extinction of the dinos 65mill years ago , of course we all know that DT lyrics go a little deeper than a simple event, so it may mean something completely different but still i believe that it is related in a symbolic or metaphoric way . i hope im not repeating things that someone else or the band itself said before, im just all enthusiastic with sciense..

even around 2:52 you can see a meteor with the word "irid".. the meteor from that event contained LOTS of Iridium, marking the line between geological eras by the extreme amount of iridium in the surface of the earth at that given moment, damn it .. this is so interesting.. really.. read about it.. it is interesting shit.

Franco Buzzetti I believe its something different. Only because there are humans and signs of human civilisation in the video, the dogs and the slug look mutated, and a crater in the earth. I believe its more to do with a nuclear bomb, if one of them gets sent to country they are gonna fire back, will be a disaster. An end beyond compare iridium. Most people would consider this song a nuisance. In that I find it very strange that it actually makes me cry. I don't really need a stupid love story for tears. This songs summarize our helplessness in life (our evolution and transition to consciousness from the unconsciousness). It is so sad that once we were seperated from the stars to take our human forms today for no reason; it is indeed an end beyond compare and the saddest story I have ever heard.

This is a more Melodic Death Metal but Mikael Stanne has a somewhat black metal sound in his growls (as you can compare to Carach Angren and other bands). 0:37 His heart is Iridium. The dots are the electrons. The meteor about to destroy the planet is labeled Iridium. I believe this song is about the cycle of matter. Billions of years from now, the matter that composes us will be a part of the cosmos. We will all be stars, meteors, planets, nebula, and even different forms of life. Also, the owl that appears at 0:46 for a second is carrying a book by Rilke. I'm not familiar with his work, but maybe somebody else is?
@13thcentury
@13thcentury 3 жыл бұрын
I saw the owl as extraterrestrial, or extrasolar. Culture has lots of nods to owls watching. Who watches the watchers? Owls are not what they seem. Whether spiritual or other, always watching. You have the 3 ships approaching earth. Once Iridium has annihilated life on earth, or mutated it to extremes. Maybe in the far future, we are visited by curious eyes. Or the extrasolar owl IS iridium, and the ships are an asteroid cluster. Then we are truly buggered by this cosmic horror.

To quote James Rolfe, probably meant for kids. Little kids. Little kids who get hopped up on sugar to the point that their brains operate on higher levels of existence and their super sensory nerves subject them to a fantasy world exceeding that of an adult on the most powerful narcotics known to science.

I do, but I don't fully understand why, maybe it's the imagery used and general theme of the song, cause there's no direct reference to Lovecraft's work in here

Emanuel , there are squids forming hexagrams and all the monstrosities of deformed creatures as well as the sense of cosmic dread and mankind insignificance in the universe. is very lovecraftian

I just cried... this is the most beautiful work of art I have ever heard/seen. This song is probably their best song that represents them as a band. This mournful dirge manages to completely blend Death Metal and Melodicism an such a harmonious way that they don't even seem to be two different sounds, but one and the same. All the intensity and power of Death Metal, living symbiotically with the grace, emotion, and beauty that comes from good, clean acoustic songs. Bravo. Bravo.

This is so fucking beautifully dark. It is indeed one of my most favorite songs ever. I can't help but to think of what it would be like if the background-ish sounds during the chorus were a little more clear and vibrant, during that one part it sounds a little 'shelly' or 'plastic cuppy'(as if you were listening to the chorus through one or the other). As I said, I fucking LOVE this song & its very unlike their recording quality, so maybe my speakers need a fresh calibration?

It ain't scary. It's just the art style that makes it look like that.....Plus the ominous undertone of course. But it's not scary.

Let the horizon lead On through the ether of the night Dragged across the burning heavens Flying homeward like a burdened soul Shattered into a million brighter stars We fragile, naked, rare Scattered across forever Out from creations core An end beyond compare Iridium Now is the time to leave We lie awake, we stand afire At the edge of the world Above, mirror of light Below, the mantle of the stars And strangely they fall Shattered into a million brighter stars We fragile, naked, rare Scattered across forever Out from creations core An end beyond compare Iridium Shattered into a million brighter stars We fragile, naked, rare Scattered across forever Out from creations core An end beyond compare An end beyond compare Iridium
