Part 17: • Darkchild on Michael J...
Part 1: • Rodney "Darkchild" Jer...
--------
In this clip, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins talked about Michael Jackson wanting to buy his publishing for the album they worked on together. He recounted how Michael built a reputation for gobbling up publishing after his highly publicized purchase of The Beatles catalog. Darkchild said that he was urged to jump into the publishing business by Michael when the two built a rapport because he felt that was a route for creators to build out lucrative business opportunities.

@@MCBrainpower That part I know. But what I was getting at, was that Paul McCartney, having lost his publishing in the last 60's/early 70's, to a manager of his (and the other Beatles), had more than one opportunity to buy the publishing back, before he had the conversation with Michael about the importance/value of owning publishing in 1980/81. What I was trying to say is that for years, Paul made it out as if Michael double crossed him/stole directly from him, when it was strictly business

Northern Songs owned the Beatles publishing. ATV acquired it without Paul’s knowledge. Then it went up for bid. Paul tried to get Yoko Ono to go half on the bid. Yoko didn’t want to. Paul could have bought it by himself, but he wanted John Lennon’s family to get a piece. Michael didn’t just take the Beatles songs. He simply outbid everyone else. He even told Paul that he was going to get the songs, and Paul thought he was kidding

When people make the rich list for musicians. Many don't realize that when Michael Jackson was alive. He was by FAR the richest recording artist that ever lived. His 50% share in that catalog that they targeted him for. Was worth 20 BILLION dollars. From the moment he acquired that catalog in 1985. They turned on him. And it was get it back by any means necessary. And we know how that ended.

Mj made a smart business move by turning turning that 47.5 million investment from 1985 into 1 billion dollars his estate sold it all for between 2015 and 2017, the millions in income from fees it brought him during the decades he owned it, and now still retains just his own catalog of music which is priceless itself. And it also worked out for McCartney as starting in 2018, he was able to regain the rights to his earliest Beatles music under U.S. copywight law without having to spend millions like MJ and Sony did and will regain his whole Beatles catalog by the year 2027. So in a way, it has now worked out for everyone and Paul has no real basis to be mad at anyone but himself for originally selling that catalog of his back in 1967.
