There are several scenes of the bad guys driving a truck. Behind and between them on the back wall of the cab is a Playboy Magazine type centerfold taped there. We'll never know how many of the intended audience of kids ever noticed it.

I did and noticed those centerfolds at age 8, 1973 ;). And what is funny, is truck driver's on Okinawa and in Korea were still doing that same "decorating "in 1996. LOL. I took a DoD job 20+ years later and spent a year in the Orient , so needless to say when I went over there , I had to check on the accuracy on my old kid Godzilla movies 20+ years later:). First time on Okinawa, I hitched a ride with a trucker to a nearby town , and his truck cab was adorned with Playboy Centerfolds LOL. I really wished I could have explained why it was so funny to me, but I did not know Japanese and he only knew a little English. After I jumped off at the next town, I literally was nearly ROTFLMAO, because it was so dam cool and funny to me. Dude probably thought I was a weirdo with a three mile smile, LOL. But how do you explain "Godzilla vs Megalon+ playboy centerfolds, + a 20 year timespan", through a language barrier? It was funny/glorius to me . I was leaning over on the side, after I got put of his truck on the side of the road, just laughing for 30 minutes .Stupid funny and accurate to me, like a biblical prophesy. (Godzilla vs Megalon) will always deserve a place in my heart for that insight and centerfold models. But it is not really surprising -as all motorheads , mechanics , and truckers/ real dudes /military/etc worldwide are renown for such (MIsogyny or whatever the F it is called now). That is why tool-girl/car/playboy calendars sold so well for so many years. They still got pretty girls at car shows over there. Wish I could buy a few, and I am not talking about the cars.

This is the only Godzilla film from the Showa era that I saw in a theater. I was around nine years old and the theater was full of kids having a fun time. There is no doubt who the target audience was for Godzilla at the time. Every long-term franchise goes through different phases of popular culture. Sometimes they work and sometimes not as much. Personally, I think Megalon is a great looking monster. In a more serious film, Megalon could be real creepy since he is mostly a giant cockroach. Regarding Jet Jaguar's ability to grow, I learned that in the original Japanese (subtitled) version, the alien spies made some computer changes to Jet Jaguar so that the robot would follow their orders (such as leading Megalon). Apparently, part of the alien reprogramming included giving Jet Jaguar the power to grow. I imagine that the aliens were planning to have a giant Jet Jaguar to command and destroy cities as well. Talk about lazy re-writing for the dubbed version.

2:09 That light fixture that they have behind the "Seatopia" leader isn't some prop that they made for the film. It's an actual light fixture that was sold in stores at the time period. How do I know this? One of my friends from grade school was kind of wealthy, and he lived in this big house that I thought was a mansion back then. That thing was the light fixture/chandelier thing that they had in their huge, ornate, foyer. It's the exact one. They just went to some lighting store, bought the most strange light fixture they could find, and mounted it upside down on the set. Also, is it me, but do most of the "Seatopia" sets look like a re-purposed gambling casino?

Still one of my favorite entries due to how silly and fun the movie is. It's a Shame the kid who did the initial design of Jet Jaguar wasn't too happy with what the studio did to him. Jet Jaguar was originally known as Red Alone and wasn't so brightly colored. Jet Jaguars design was even made intentionally unappealing to differentiate him from the swath of Tokusatsu characters dominating Japanese television. The song at the end " Godzilla and Jet Jaguar Punch! Punch! Punch!" was even sung by the king of 70's Tokusatsu song Masato Shimon

Agreed, it’s not great filmmaking in a traditional sense, but it is a fun entry in the later years of the original Godzilla run. I’ve always felt the series thrives on colorful side characters not so much the monsters bashing each other. Both are necessary, but the fights can get boring unless they get creative and keep the monsters actively part of the plot. A few of the movies devolve into endless, senseless pummeling and repetitive sound effects.

I think this was the first Godzilla movie (or any "Kaiju", although nobody called them that back then in America) I ever saw. I remember my uncle gave my brother this movie on VHS. The VHS cover showed the monsters fighting atop the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, which never happens in the movie. This is one of those movies that used to be in the public domain here, but then a corporation managed to weasel it out and copyright it again. The same thing happened with It's a Wonderful Life and the first season of Star Trek.

This was a pleasant surprise and a film I've wanted to see covered for a while. Great job! I admit, maybe it's because I first saw Godzilla vs. Megalon when I was college-age and the original Gojira when I was ten, but I can never bring myself to embrace the film's ridiculousness. I just think the earlier sequels directed by Ishiro Honda did a better job at balancing entertainment and drama without lapsing into parody (except for the dance in Astro-Monster, the monster conversation in Ghidorah, and King Kong vs. Godzilla, which has an intentional comedic tone). And the best Heisei films were very much in line with the '54 original's tone, telling dark, well-rounded, and eye-opening stories that expanded on the themes of escalation of any form of weaponry and atrocities against nature. Godzilla vs. Megalon just seems to be a case of a great movie monster being watered-down and manipulated in a strictly commercial enterprise that is merely attempting to cash in on what's popular at the time to appeal to demographics. It barely has an identity because it's imitating its own competition (Gamera films, Japanese robot heroes, etc.). Godzilla has no mystique or sense of grandeur and awe. Even in King Kong vs. Godzilla where he's still anthropormophized to a degree, he still has some menace to him and his presence means something. This is like the Frankenstein monster changing from a sympathetic, multi-layered character to a one-dimensional, mindless zombie that kills people in the Universal films or Freddy Krueger changing from a terrifying and elusive boogeyman to an undead comedian wannabe who doesn't impress. Ishiro Honda once said about Godzilla's dance in Invasion of Astro-Monster, "I didn't create Godzilla for this." And I myself say, Godzilla wasn't meant for just being lazily inserted into thin plots and being twisted into something that he wasn't initially meant to be. It's because of films like Godzilla vs. Megalon that the series still has a bad reputation with some people. Note: I know that pretty much most Godzilla sequels are cash-grabs anyway, but if we're juat talking about the Showa films, at least Honda tried hard to make his films dignified productions. He saw the kaiju as more than just figures of jest. And yes, All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge) is still terrible, but the last time I watched it, I could see some effort even with the constraints of the production.

This was the only "classic" Godzilla film I got to see on a big screen, albeit a drive-in theatre. I was about 9 at the time and ate up everything horror and/or monster related movies in the early 70's. They don't stand up well from childhood to adulthood. I cannot recall if I had seen the original Godzilla yet, probably only the Americanized version. As silly as they are they were fun to watch on a Saturday morning or afternoon. But the best will always be Gojiro.

When that toy jet model, hit one of the aliens on a stairway, was rather brutal(the cut here does not do it justice, to the US cinema version of the time, I suspect a British version might be missing a couple seconds). I still got to wonder if that stuntman was not injured in that scene. Biggest issue was they re-used alot of destruction scenes from other earlier movies, all us little kids noticed that.

Hello there Dark Corners Reviews! Love your channel and I hope you do more video's in the near future. I've been writing my own fanfic version of this film. It's titled, It's called Godzilla vs. the Kabulon Brothers: The Undersea Kingdom's SOS Strategy. Instead of one, there are two Megalon's. Both are robot's representing Seatopia’s ancient guardians from long ago. I also changed Megalon from Kabulon because I felt this new name fits better. One of them causes a volcanic eruption and earthquake on Monster island, sending the monsters fleeing except for Godzilla. After a battle, Godzilla chases Megalon to Japan. Goro Ibuki and his younger brother Hiroshi Ibuki see the second Megalon after it drains the water from Lake Kitayama. Instead of being villain's, the Seatopian’s are victims of the nuclear tests and help Goro improve Jet Jaguar. I also improved and expanded on Seatopia's history and cut out the part about them being allies with the M Space Nebula aliens since it's never explained how they came to know each other. So no Gigan in my story. Sorry. I made Goro and Hiroshi brothers instead of friends in the movie. I also added in a new character such as Einus. She is a Seatopian princess who helps them against Ana, another Seatopian who is controlling the Megalon Brothers. In the film there was no given reason why JJ was created. But now there is. In a flashback, you learn that JJ was a project by Goro and Hiroshi's parents for the propose of fighting monsters until they are both killed during Gigan and King Ghidorah's rampage through Tokyo in Godzilla vs. Gigan. It's not the most original idea. You see it in other tokusatsu shows at that time, but what else are you going to do with a giant robot. Let it fight monsters, no duh! Jet Jaguar is later upgraded in the story as an advanced A.I. and can talk just like in Godzilla SP. He has new abilities, ranging from a finishing move called the Plasma Beam he fires from his wrists when he crosses them in a X fashion. Jet Jaguar can also fire a taser-like attachment from is right arm and a deploy a pepper-spray from his left arm. To freeze his enemy’s, Jet Jaguar can shoot a liquid nitrogen spray from his mouth. So what do you think? Do any of you have any ideas that can improve Godzilla vs. Megalon? Let me know by replying please.

I saw this at the cinema when I was about 10 or 11 and remember being somewhat disappointed. The slightly older members of the audience, the 13 and 14 year olds got a great laugh out of it and if I remember correctly booed it at the end.

I loved it as a kid and still love it despite how bad it is. Godzilla gets away with a lot more than I would allow of other movie franchises. Thank you for the great review.

Maybe in the US. I doubt that was the case in either Japan or the UK.

You’ve never felt true anger until you’ve been “summoned a cockroach god and a gargoyle to destroy the world” angry. Side note: the original American poster for this movie might be one of the most absurd and misleading ones in film history and I genuinely adore it.

Sorry, but I don't understand your incredulity at them surviving that fall in the metal box. American Academics have been surviving much more aggressive landings in fridges since the 1950's.

Couldn't help noticing the child and his big brother were named Goro and Rokuro. In Japanese "go" means 5 and "roku" means 6; I wonder if they had older siblings...

I still have this movie on VHS, I have it on BD, I even have it on the Criterion collection but I can only watch it, only recommend it via MST3k. Which I have on DVD. Because of course I do. Godzilla versus Gigan is a kids' film that's boring and Revenge is a kids' film that's bad. This one's weird which, as Joel would say, produces creativity.
