I think the one point that you've missed is that this mic is now an "end game" mic for anyone with a 2i2, M-Track Solo, or Behringer Euphoria. Those with inexpensive interfaces (less than 56dB of gain) couldn't ever get a SM7B or RE20 without getting a Cloudlifter.
@stevefaul17102 жыл бұрын
I had low expectations, and I gotta say they were blown away. Very competitive with most of the mics tested. Yeah, the RE20 shredded it, but... it should. I agree, it's muddy in the mids until you turn on the boost. But the pattern rejection and rumble filtering are crazy good. I'd like to see a "Mark II" version come out someday.

The background sound rejection and handling noise rejection is what impressed me the most about the Logitech Blue Sona. The plosives were also amongst the best-handled (without the benefit of a pop filter) that I can recall.

SM7B was better overall for my listening. I have a Rodecaster Pro 2.0 so no cloudlifter is needed. I love the solid construction of the SM7B and no handling noise at all. I was able to adjust the switches on the back to adjust it to my female voice. Each person should pick a mic that he/she likes with his/her voice. I think the cost should be a little lower and they will take on the competitors. They could also consider coming out with a version that does NOT have the pre-amp for Rodecaster Pro 2 users so it could be cheaper and slam the SM7B. I would not want a pre-amp inside my mic, it's something I do not need and something to possibly break or make noise down the road.

Recently they had this down to $299 on Amazon for about a week. I decided to grab it at that price point. Agree that 350 wasn't worth checking it out. I have extended return period but I think I may stick with it. I do like that I don't need to drive it as hard as my SM7B. On a super cheap audio interface like the UM2 I was able to get strong gain without going past 2 o'clock on the input gain dial. I paid $40 for that on sale, so at 340 total investment that's not a horrible combination. I'll probably use my MOTU 2 with it for more serious recording, but for hobby streaming the UM2 is doing a nice job with this mic. Ultimately 250 would be ideal the ideal price point, but 300 was fair enough.

My thoughts exactly, couldn’t agree more. I also think it’s way overpriced for what it offers and its biggest competitor is the SE Dynacaster - which is also more versatile in its built in EQ (low cut, low shelf, presence boost, high shelf vs low cut and presence boost) and has more gain in its preamp (30db vs 25db). For 200, it would be a clear winner, but for 350 - just as you have summed it up. Great work, good and fair review. 👍

Instead of making an SM7B-killer, they made an SM7B caricature-muddier by default and with even less useable switches. I’m not sure who this is for in a world where the SM7B and Dynacaster exist.

I bought it for myself a few weeks ago because I really liked the built-in preamp and extreme noise rejection. At first, I felt like I wasted money and was thinking of returning it, but then I turned on the presence boost and the clean EQ setting on my Vocaster One and all of a sudden my voice sounded great. I have a very bassy voice in the low and mid ranges so this helps me out a lot.

Nice review. Maybe my ears aren't what they used to be. But I couldn't hear a lot of difference between any of them. I'll have to listen back and look out for the "mud" as you called it. Maybe it's being normalised in post? I have the Yeti X already. Very very good for a USB mic. And I have the Shure SM7B which, along with the Triton Fethead in-line, is noticeably warmer. But I have to say not day and night better. I still have to run the gain on my Focusrite Scarlett at about 1:30-2:00 though. I do have a Blue Sona coming tomorrow and looking forward to trying and comparing all three.

Would this mic perform better at a distance? It sounded very muddy before the low cut filter and it's super sensitive to plosives. Being a supercardioid with low gain requirements I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're going for rather than being meant to be eaten like a 7B.

Granted, I’m on bluetooth headphones streaming this over youtube, so compression shenanigans may be happening, but I really didn’t like the RE20 on your voice. There’s a specific, almost computer-like, frequency on the mids-highs of your voice. It immediately makes me think there’s some EMI going on, but I definitely preferred the Sona over the RE20. The clarity on the RE20, and obviously the SM7B, were much better though. But the Dynacaster was the most interesting comparison, had a hard time hearing the difference between them over bluetooth. Was surprised at how close the SM58 sounded as well. The presence boost really helped get the Sona more clear on your voice, but I think I agree with most comments. If it were $100 cheaper, it’d be a nice deal to get the looks, decent sound and build quality. But otherwise, just splurge more for a cloudlifter and the SM7B, imo.
@ClutchGeneSports Жыл бұрын
Would you give the Blue Sona away? Or do you recommend a site to get it from that is cheaper?
@Finsterwald_ Жыл бұрын
I don’t agree. The difference between the SM7B and Sona is none existent. The biggest selling point beside the same sounding is the white version of the sonar. So it’s a plus from sound and design point of view for the sonar and is also a deal breaker.

I currently daily drive an SE Electronics Dynacaster myself and I'd be lying to see how these compare on my voice and to see if there's a difference that's worthwhile for the extra $70 aside from the aesthetic and polar pattern difference (though I am curious why Logitech omitted a switch to use it passive instead of solely active)

I agree that the price point is the biggest issue. For your voice the clear winner was the RE20. Spend an extra hundred, a worthwhile expenditure. Of course there is the dynamic lack of sensitivity to work with, and that might be an extra expense. But, for an extra hundred, it’s a no brainer. For podcasting, not commercial broadcasting, this might be an attractive option at $250

While judging mics through KZbin's audio processing can be a bit of a challenge, to my ears, the Dynacaster offered a better sound. I'm not a fan of presence boost, but it did improve your clarity through the Blue Sona. The SM7B had a clearly better sound. For $50 more, the SM7B would be my purchase choice compared to the Blue microphone. As always, well done review.
@Itslegitman Жыл бұрын
Where sm7b has that sweet low-end the blue sona is just too muddy with weird top-end. To me dynacaster sounds the best of them all just because of good low to top-end balance. But i guess blue can be OK with very high pitched voices. I didn't like the plosive rejection on sona too.

@LeSaff2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of this microphone without even talking about its features. It will create a bit more confusion about the different segments of Microphones. Logitech is associated with the world of computers and therefore gamers. Many already reject usb microphones because of their origin without really knowing the differences and without trying to optimize them. Blue is associated with pro microphones and Logitech has gamer products like hyperx or nzxt for example. Mixing these 2 brands seems dangerous to me especially on the segment of xlr microphones. Otherwise I much prefer the sE electronics dynacaster, but it's very much a matter of taste.
