In my use the PodMic beats the MV7. I also like its USB-C a lot more. I am happy for Rode pushing the envelope because Shure - despite being the industry standard, is not delivering what I expect from them.

I am just starting out as content creator/reviewer and really appreciated the information provided. I have purchased 2 Rode PodMic as my starting microphones with the RodeCaster Duo so I feel I have the complete setup for in-studio and remote locations when using my computer. It was great to see all the mics compared along with the top of the line Shure SM7B. Maybe when I get better in production I will move up to the SM7B.

Excellent comparison, as always. I have a Shure Mv7 and I think that, of the microphones presented, it really competes directly with the PodMic USB. The sound is similar, the functions, the size. The Mv7 has some small advantages such as the layout of the command buttons (volume, headphone volume), the simplicity of the software, etc. But these are aspects that are not critical for use, things that are compensated by the excellent price of the PodMic USB. If I didn't have the Mv7 I would absolutely buy the Rode. A great option for what it offers. Now I need to mention: I was surprised by the quality of the Rode Videomic Go II. I had already watched some tests of it, but all with it being used as a shotgun (on top of the camera, for video). And yes, in this function it is good for the price (much better than recording with the camera microphone, of course). But I found the quality surprising when used for voiceover or broadcast. A full-bodied sound, without sibilance. Thank you and a hug from Brazil!

Thank you! I totally agree, the MV7 has some advantages with the physical controls and ability to use both outputs. I'm not a huge fan of the processing options in the MOTIV app though where I find all the processing except for the noise gate to improve the sound of the PodMic when used sparingly. The GO II definitely was a surprise to me! I figured I would throw it in there in case anyone was looking for an option that could be used off-screen and I was shocked by how nice it sounds up close. It was maybe a tad boomy at a distance of 4-5 inches but I think 6-8 inches away and it could definitely be used for voiceover segments in addition to general overhead booming.

Same here! And I instantly thought, why would I buy such a bulky PodMic, when the VideoMic Go II sounds sooo good, while being much more portable for outdoor use, too. Well, I understand it totally depends on the use case. The integrated DSP capabilities of the PodMic could be game changer for everyone who concentrates totally on Podcasting indoors. I am just starting to do some outdoor Video as a hobby photographer and wanted something also for indoor voice over. VideoMic Go II might be a good allrounder??

Fantastic comparison. I love the structure and clarity of this. Thank you! I’m using this for work, and debating between this PodMic, the MV7, the ATR-2100x, and the Blue Yeti. (I also run a YT channel and I’m thinking double use, but a dedicated ATR-2100x is tempting, as is having the mic off screen. That internal DSP, though…) I’ll be doing my own testing to figure out my needs, but again, this was huge, so thank you!

Thanks for this great comparison. The one thing i like on the MV7 is the gain control and the mute button. That side, the sound of the Podmic usb is great and for travel and studios work it is a very versatile mic. It’s going to be the Shure MV7 or the Podmic USB, will check them out both but this review at least narrowed my choice down quite a bit.

I really appreciated diving into your video comparison of microphones. It's clear you've put a ton of work into it, and honestly, the sound quality from the PodMic USB blew me away. But there's a catch for me - the software that comes with these mics is for Windows only, and I'm a Mac user. I'm curious about the gain levels, like does powering the mic through USB affect its gain, or is XLR the way to go for enough juice? Here's where I'm coming from: I ended up with a Yeti X mic, not realizing it was a condenser instead of dynamic. I've heard from a few folks that dynamic mics are usually the go-to, especially when you're tweaking the sound with an EQ. They also said the Yeti X rocks in a soundproofed space and Vocal booth, which got me thinking since I record in my home office and am still trying to nail the perfect setup to cut down on echo reverb. What's your take on this? Should I think about selling my Yeti X for a dynamic mic? I'd really value your insight, especially since I'm still learning the ropes here.

I'm going to buy for the narration of the review video. SM7B is said to have a warm voice, but I think you can feel stuffy in the review video. I know it's a matter of personal judgment. However, I ask you because you are a KZbinr who is filming a review video. 1. I know we need to replace the pop filter for MV7. Since RODE PODMIC is a built-in pop filter, is it no problem to use it without a separate pop filter? 2. RODE PODMIC VS M7X What do you think is the right microphone for the narration of the review video?

Great job on this video! Very well done. Tip - it looks like you’re using On-Stage quick release connectors. They’re inexpensive and they work - until they don’t. The spring loaded mechanism is fully sealed meaning you can’t inspect it for wear. And they do wear, but you won’t have any notice, until it fails and your expensive microphone hits the floor. I guess technically at that point it is “On Stage.” Do yourself a favor and upgrade to some quick release connectors with a better design.

The Go 2 sounds much better than I expected at close range as well. It also sounds notably different to me when connected over USB compared to using the 3.5mm output into a camera. It must be something different about the USB (5v) circuitry vs the 3.5mm (2.5v plug-in power) circuitry. The MV7x was a great choice though if you were trying to minimize room echo, that should definitely do the job for you!

With regard to the XDM-100 it’s not just yours, I sent my first purchase back because of the monitoring white noise… Using a ground loop isolator I was able to significantly reduce it but who wants that thing hanging out of the mic. The second mic I received was still noisy but less than the first, I could reduce the noise with just the cable extender so decided to keep the mic because I love the sound I can get with the mic and it comes with everything you need. This is, however, a very disappointing at this price point and completely unexpected from Rode. Great review!
@semiprotech

Thanks for sharing! I agree it's very strange and disappointing coming from Rode that many of the XDM100 units would have excessive noise in the headphone output. Seems like something they definitely should have addressed prior to release for a product in that price range.

That is a tough choice! One other thing to keep in mind is that the windscreen that comes on the MV7 is not great at stopping plosives, so a lot of people will replace it with a different one that might change the look a bit. I've heard if you buy a replacement windscreen for the SM7B it works better and still looks pretty good. I personally like the processing options on the PodMic USB better than the MV7, although the noise gate is a bit finicky. I'm not a huge fan of the capacitive volume control on the MV7 but you can control both the mic gain and the headphone volume with that control - the PodMic only allows you to control headphone volume with the dial on the back, the gain has to be adjusted in software over USB. They are both great options for meetings and video content though so you can't go wrong!

Really debating between the sennheiser and the podmic usb. I prefer USB right now just cos it's easier but I like the idea of being able to upgrade my set up to XLR without needing to invest in a whole new mic. The profile is cheaper though and sounds really good! My issue is just a terrible recording environment and I'm worried that a condenser is just going to pick all of it up. Any thoughts?
@VaibhavAgain
@VaibhavAgain 8 күн бұрын
You can make it not pickup the background sounds by using some filters. Profile doesn't come with a software so you will need to use obs or some other platform to apply those filters. But the noise removal comes at the cost of quality. So prefer some dynamic mic instead of condenser ones.

Im so stuck between the rode podmic usb sm7b and q9u. I care a lot about the handling sound which makes me lean more away from q9u, but the sm7b price is really steep especially having to get an interface for it. Great video! Awesome of you to do such an extensive comparison. I currently have the Elgato Wave 3. When I listen to your comparison I don't noticed much of a difference. Might be slightly better with the Rode. I use my microphone setup on the road mainly. Any suggestions on sticking with Wave 3 or adding the new Rode mic? Thx!
@semiprotech
@semiprotech Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It would depend on which of these factors you care most about and/or would use the most: - PodMic USB has convenience of retaining the DSP settings in the mic, no software is required to add processing. - PodMic USB is definitely more robust/durable, BUT also a lot heavier in a bag. - PodMic requires a separate stand - Wave 3 has the desk stand included. - The Wave 3 is going to probably be a little more forgiving on all voices - the PodMic tends to sound great on some voices and less so on others (it's a bit mid-forward so a nasally voice might have that amplified a little). - Wave 3 has better on-mic physical controls. The PodMic doesn't have any physical control over the monitor mix/blend or the mic gain. - PodMic USB should be a little bit better at isolating voice vs. background noise - in my testing my room was quiet and has some sound treatment, but in a space with appliance noise, outside noises, etc. the Wave 3 will likely pick those up a little bit more. - Wave 3 has a slightly better headphone output - it had the cleanest headphone output of all the mics I tested in the video. PodMic USB is definitely usable for recording & playback, but I could actually listen to casual audio through the Wave 3 without being bothered by any hiss noise. - And of course the PodMic has the XLR connection there if you ever need it. If you at some point get an XLR recorder or interface to travel with or need to plug into someone else's', there's no need for a different mic. If none of those things tip the scales in the direction of the PodMic for you, then keep rockin' the Wave 3 because it's a great mic!

The PodMic USB will be more forgiving in recording spaces that don’t have sound treatment or have some background noise. The NT1 5th gen is a fine choice for quiet spaces with some sound treatment. The NT1 is going to sound a little more neutral/natural but will require more tinkering in post (noise reduction) if the recording space has fair amount of reflections or ambient noise.

Quick question. I'm new to all of this and was wondering. For USB mics like ATR2100x or Sennheiser Profile with no software features, can you run it through OBS and apply filters/effects that way?
@semiprotech
@semiprotech Жыл бұрын
Yes! You can apply effects in OBS that will be "burned in" to your live output/recording. If you're recording, I personally recommend applying your processing afterwards because you'll have more control. But for live use, it definitely can be helpful to apply a little bit of processing via OBS if you want to add a little compression, corrective EQ, etc.

Out of all the microphones in the video, the best at reducing reflections would be the SM7B in my experience. The best mic that I've ever used at reducing the sound of reflections would be the ElectroVoice RE20. But for a USB mic, the XDM-100 does a very good job and the PodMic USB is also quite good especially if you can keep the mic fairly close in the 6" range.

@semiprotech
@semiprotech Жыл бұрын
The PodMic USB has a little bit of a brighter tone than the MV7 to my ears. If you're looking for a little more clarity, you might enjoy the PodMic USB. I also prefer the DSP options in the PodMic over the MV7 but that is also subjective and wouldn't make a difference if you don't use the built-in DSP. The only thing I would say about the PodMic's sound is that it's a tad mid-forward, so if your voice has any nasal qualities it could amplify that a bit. But otherwise I would say it's a solid choice. Is there a specific quality about the MV7 that you're not liking?
@ScreaminpirateEDC
@ScreaminpirateEDC Жыл бұрын
@semiprotech The application on desktop for the MV7 was..ok at best. Didn't really assist in any noticeable way for me. I now have a Focusrite solo, but the gain is up at around 90%. Also I noticed I sound much brighter and my Plosives are very noticeable. I know part of that is gain, but it's up that high because I use the microphone for work calls as well.

Btw have u isolated ur room? Is there any way to digitally get rid of the voice resonating from empty walls...

I use two main sound absorbers in my recording space and the floor is carpeted (disclaimer - affiliate links): 1. AudiMute sheets over the windows. They cover pretty much any size window nicely - not soundproof but definitely dampen the sound from outside and absorbs reflections inside. amzn.to/3Xn7RtS 2. Sound blankets hanging on stands. I use two of the 80x80 inch 10lb blankets from vocalboothtogo and hang them on light stands with a cross-bar. These have made the biggest difference for me in reducing room reflections. semiprotech.link/vocalboothtogo I also hang a heavy pair of curtains over the door while recording - any curtains, just double them up and hang from command hooks. On the software side there are de-reverb plugins available for most DAWs. I've only heard good results from two things personally though - the new Waves Clarity Vx DeReverb plugin ($29) www.waves.com/plugins/clarity-vx-dereverb and the Hush app for Mac ($49) hushaudioapp.com/. The hush app is only available for Mac currently and works as a separate app rather than a plugin but it works really well in my experience at reducing both background noise and reverb. Hope that helps!

The Podmic USB, especially when you turned on processing, sounded considerably harsher. I think you might've overdone it with some of the DSP settings. The low boost definitely helped.

I did have the DSP settings turned up pretty high (higher than I would use) just to make sure it was more obvious when it was on vs off.

@@semiprotech I'd suggest avoiding that, except maybe for a small segment of comparison, as people use these videos to pick a microphone, and if the DSP sounds overbearing, it'll affect their choices. Can do a small segment with them "over the top," but then for actual testing, go with what you think sounds best.

If the Shure MV7 and the Rode PodMic USB were the same price, which would you buy and why? Thank you
@semiprotech

I would buy the PodMic USB unless I needed to use both USB & XLR outputs at the same time, for these reasons: 1. I like the sound of the available processing (minus the noise gate) better than the options available in the MOTIV app. 2. The included windscreen works - the MV7 windscreen really needs to be replaced if you want something effective at stopping plosives. 3. The MV7 is still micro-USB and that annoys me. 4. PodMic USB works with Rode Connect and UNIFY which gives you free access to custom routing of your inputs and system audio. The MOTIV app is nice (and the mobile app is admittedly better than anything Rode has for smartphones) but doesn't give you the same level of control for multiple sources. From a sound quality standpoint, they don't sound the same but both are very good so it's pretty much a tie for me there. I also have so far found no significant difference in their handling of background noise - both perform well. The PodMic USB might pick up bumps of the boom arm a bit more than the MV7, and the MV7 also has more controls on the mic through the capacitive-touch input. I just don't personally use those controls a lot so it's not a huge selling point for me. A lot of that is personal preference and definitely subjective - the MV7 is still a great option, but for me it's the PodMic USB!

Okay thank you very much! I’m more so focused on the sound qualities of the microphones as I’m not too bothered about Micro USB, I’m willing to get the RK345 replacement pop filter and I don’t have an audio interface. I appreciate with regard to the quality you gave it a tie due to it being down to preference however, so I think I may go for the Shure MV7 as I can buy the mic 2nd hand for a lower price and hopefully find one in good condition. Thank you for the reply, and great video. Keep it up!

Can I connect the MV7 to my Mac (for work recording) while having it also connected to a rode caster duo (which is connected to my gaming pc) at the same time?
@semiprotech

Yes! I've been able to record through XLR into my Rodecaster Duo and into my MacBook over USB at the same time. The signal is sent to both outputs simultaneously.

The Rode PodMic USB sounds flat, with no real depth, no bass presence. I wouldn't buy it even if it were half the present price.

as an owner of the NTUSB, it is a piece of shit. when they are in a sound controlled room im sure it might be JUST ok, in a household environment they are shit, and even in a sound controlled room i still wouldnt even be happy with it if i spent half the price.

I purchased the Rode wireless go 2 microphones and their sound quality was terrible. Then, when I went and installed lavaliver go microphones on it, the sound improved a little, but it was not professional at all. Then I put these microphones aside and bought the Rode nt USB + model and observed that the sound it gave was at very satisfactory levels. I'm thinking of buying a rode videomic ntg and a rode wireless pro to use in my outdoor video shooting. I want to move to a more professional level in my studio shooting. I'm thinking of buying microphones that I can use with my computer, mobile phone and camera. I am thinking of buying a boom microphone for the camera and a dynamic one and a rode nt1 5th generation for the computer. Or I can also connect the rode nt usb + model. I haven't made a clear decision yet. What are your suggestions for me in this regard ? Since I am Turkish, I wrote it by translating it from Turkish.
