The real story behind the British heist film BANK JOB (2008). On a Saturday night in 1971 a gang of thieves tunnelled for 40ft into the vault of Lloyds Bank on Baker Street, central London. The robbers communicated via walkie-talkie and the signal was picked up by an amateur radio enthusiast, Robert Rowlands (interviews available) who reported the conversation to the police. A check of 700 banks failed, with Lloyds on Baker Street being one of those checked. With the vault door undisturbed, police assumed there was no other way of entry and left. The thieves gained entry through a 15 inch hole. Scrawled inside the safe, the criminals left the words: "Let Sherlock Holmes try to solve this". Four men were jailed in 1973 for their roles in the robbery. It has been suggested some of the stolen material contained sensitive information about the Royal Family. Interviews available with Ron Ratcliffe who was in the police surveillance team.

By now the freed robbers would have quietly already enjoyed their 'hard earned' takings, probably bought retirment homes in Spain, Portugal etc far, far away from good old England.

The police should have started with banks *nearest* to the residence of Robert Rowlands, and then concentrically widened their search. They wasted a lot of valuable time widening their search away from the most likely target : someplace within walkie-talkie range of Rowlands' ham radio. The police might also have caught the robbers if the first officer had taken Rowlands' first call more seriously..

On the weekend of 30 April to 01 May 1977 a similar robbery took place in Krugersdorp South Africa at the Standard Bank Branch. Empty shop, they tunneled 35 meters and also targeted thee safety deposit boxes. The perpetrators were never identified or arrested. Interesting that it is 7 years after this incident.

I love the way the show doesn't know the difference between a Robbery and a Burglary. A Robbery is when you take something from another person or persons (usually employees) by force usually with firearms. A burglary is where you sneak in take stuff that does not belong to you and leave. This is clearly a burglary because no physical person(s) were accosted.

Funny how the police were desperately trying to find a radio expert at the same time the actual expert was giving them solid advice -- and the police ignored him. The police were part of the problem. And there WERE photographs stolen for blackmail -- there was a movie made about it.

I'm not entirely convince they got the right people. The fact they can't even locate one stolen item from the vault. There should be some direct evidence to link them to the crime. So far they didn't show any here.

their accomplices pleaded guilty and would have made statements naming them as for the stolen items the bank never knew what was in the boxes and the people who owned them if they had have came forward would have been charged with tax evasion

They should have taken care of tunneling and debris remove while their name was on the lease, then conceal the tunnel and let someone else take the lease and then start a shop. One year, two, later break into the shop overnight and finish the job in a few hours. The documentary itself said they likely would have found a way to expunge the lease they signed if they had the time.

It's funny how the UK and the USA switched genius, UK used to be the tech giant, towards late 18th century the USA began to dwarf their rivals in tech During the period this heist had taken place, the American police would have had better equipment and tech to solve this crime at his infancy. I regard the UK police as experts tea party,english speaking patrol unit.

Question: Who insures Lloyds of London? Irony for sure.
@markkeller5990
@markkeller5990 2 жыл бұрын
They insure themselves by the premiums they collect from others they insure. It's pure profit. Furthermore, the items in the deposit boxes were unknown and some of them discrete as mentioned in the program. I'm sure they have a limit on what they will 'give' for a box. Likely $50,000 per box or such which is on the lease when they get the box maybe even less. Now this last part is pure speculation.
