Travis McGee is the greatest! I fell in love with this series of novels when I was a teenager, and Travis made a huge impression on the man I was to become. READ THE BOOKS! But I love this film as well. Rod Taylor and Theodore Bikel were awesome as Trav and Meyer. I wish they made a lot more of these!

William Smith said in a interview: "Rod Taylor- I don't ever want to fight him again. Toughest guy I ever fought in my life. He's a bloody Australian, and they are tough. We had the stunt guys there to set up the fight but once we got started, he didn't pay any attention to that." "He backed me into this little room and just pounded away. Bob Clouse, the director just kept filming. In fact, before shooting started,Taylor said to me, "You think you're a big tough guy, don't you?" "We worked on that fight for a day and a half, and when it was over I felt like I'd been beaten by 20 guys, but it's the best fight scene I've ever done." Smith ended up with broken ribs and Taylor with a nose!

I read Taylor kicked football player Jim Brown's ass at the Playboy Mansion as well. No doubt Taylor was a tough dude.

Thank you for sharing. I too is a huge Rod Taylor fan and Im hoping someone would upload his movie with Claudia Cardinale titled 'To Hell with Heroes'. The fight scenes of a Rod Taylor movie is still unmatchable until today even with the aid of digital effects. It's different-you feel like you're part of the action. Rod Taylor should be in the top 5 best action stars of cinema. He's no . 1 in my books.

I wanted to thank you for posting this it is irresponsible that a film where the 3 main characters are still alive 44 years later is still not available. Tonight I watched it on my Sony blueray player and used the "stretch" mode to make it 16x9. It was low res but looked great. I could see it again. I'm so annoyed that this is not available. I would pay for a legit dvd.

I saw the film when I was 17. I read the book, finally, about a year ago. I'm amazed how close to the book the film is in almost every detail. I sure wish it was available in DVD in 1:85....

Thank you so much for posting this movie - I'm a huge Travis McGee fan. Love all the books. I had never seen this movie, only heard of it. I have never understood why more Travis McGee movies were not made - I'm now on the hunt for the Sam Elliot one, although the reviews on here are not promising.

You are lucky to have met William Smith. That's one guy that I would love to shake hands with. I live in So. Cal (and so does Smith), so maybe one of these days I'll get to meet him at some expo or something. I normally don't look up to movie stars, actors, or celebrities, but Smith seems like the real deal, meaning, a real guy with real skills, abilities, and experiences; not one of these 'foo-foo' stars of today.

So much of John MacDonald's appeal is his narrative voice; McGee is a complex, philosophical, multi-layered character. And that's hard to do in a movie, so they went with all the hip counterculture cinematic cliches of the time. They wanted to make some money after all, not make an art film. The plot is one of MacDonald's simpler ones (and it's one of his shorter books), so it probably fit better than something like "The Dreadful Lemon Sky" or "Pale Gray For Guilt". Rod Taylor makes a pretty good Travis McGee; he projects some of the masculinity, insouciance, and knock around charm. I started out not thinking much of Bikel for the role of Meyer, but I changed my mind after about 10 minutes. He doesn't quite look like my mental image of the character but he has a nice gravitas and dignity. Brutal, knock down drag out fight scenes are pretty close in spirit to the book. Glad I got to see it, thanks much for uploading and keep up the great work!

I also am a McGee fan. I saw this when it came out and for years you couldn't find a copy. And if you did, it was the edited version for TV. Even William Smith couldn't find a copy. I see by the credits, though, that Taylor may have been a producer. If so, his estate may have the rights to release it on home video.

Fun. The use of music throughout nearly ruins it, but MacDonald's story isn't trampled into the ground and that's good. It also helps having a bad guy who's guaranteed to go nuts on cue. Thanks for posting.

This is an awesome copy of this film. I'm a huge Travis McGee fan I have to say the film blows the book out of the water even though John D. Macdonald the author didn't really care for the film. I thought they really captured the characters from the books. if they tried to to do Travis now I don'r know who they would get to fi that part. The Sam Elliot version really sucked. And not because of his performance but because of casting and the way it was handled. he was not right for the role. It was like they totally ignored the books. And the Empty Cooper Sea was not one of the better book so that didn't help. Anyway Rod Taylor R I P.

It's not a bad story Or movie. Rod Taylor is always pretty good in his acting. But the writers pulled that typical Hollywood crap - where the guy just Happens to know all these people that can give him information... at the drop of a hat. And all those people he knows just Happen to be affiliated with people that can do special things. Amazing.

Who was the parent company of Cinema Center/National General? CBS which means CBS who would have after the Le Mans debacle pulled out of cinema film production which they did would have switched the Travis McGee stories to television given that with cop/detective shows getting big ratings on TV at that time i was surprised that CBS or any other network would have very seriously considered developing this into a series but reshooting the above film into a TV movie as a pilot But would Rod Taylor commit to a 24 episode series but the carrot would have been the opportunity to be involved as a co-producer through his company Rodlor as well as lead star

Darren, JDM, the creator of Travis McGee, did not want McGee on the television screen, believing fans would not buy the books if they could see Trav on their tv screen every week. There were plans for a McGee TV series mid-60's with Chuck Connors as Trav but JDM wouldn't sell the rights. He was OK with a major motion picture. JDM met and liked Rod Taylor, and approved of him as Trav. Taylor, did do a few TV series. Hong Kong, before Amber, and Bearcats and Masquerade, after. SO I imagine he'd probably been alright with a McGee Tv series--but JDM would not. If you ever get a chance, check out the TV film Travis McGee with Sam Elliott. I liked that one as well. And of course, Leo DiCaprio is supposedly set to play the Beach Bum Salvage Consultant.

And sorry... but on a Cruise Ship you're most likely gonna find a bunch of OLD men with their wives - and hardly gonna have a "big bundle of cash" sitting around in their suitcase OR the bank. They're living on annuities and bonds. Hardly able to "shake someone" with old folks. Not with Sex !! They should be somewhere like Las Vegas or Bermuda - not on a floating Old Folks Home-away-from-home... ;-)

I have to wonder if anyone involved with this movie had the slightest inkling of who and what Travis McGee is. Horrible rendition. Can't imagine any true fan of the novels wanting to watch this.
