You have multiple options for getting new recruits up to speed. You can send them into low-level quests appropriate for their level, and build them up normally. You can also group them with more experienced heroes to help with that. Or, you can always send that group into a hard dungeon, but beware: no matter how much gear you give a new recruit, he won't be mentally equipped to deal with the stresses. We know people will lose heroes, so we are ensuring that raising new ones is interesting.

Thanks for the feedback--it's something we will consider. The dungeons are generally procedurally generated but we may use some set-pieces to augment that. We are also considering having some key dungeons be completely pre-designed.

Played this yesterday (kickstarted) for quite a while and it's friggin' difficult. The atmosphere is desperate and visuals are awesome. Heroes are mowed down like grass and those that survive are closed in the asylum or need to drink or whip away their worries. Creepy stuff.

I'm not sure who the narrator of this trailer is, but he deserves some serious props. Don't get me wrong, The visuals are gorgeous and the hand drawn aspect deserves a god damned award - but I sincerely hope you consider having this man narrate the entire game in a Bastion esque stle. He is FANTASTIC, and sells this trailer for you (not that it needs selling cause the game is still BADASS).

Usually, I don't trust in trailers and wait till a game is released and gameplay vids are around... but this trailer is simply one of the most awesome I have ever seen. The affliction system reminds me of the roguelike Infra Arcana. There's a similar system in that one. It's an interesting feature.

There will be multiple dungeons, linked by a town hub, which plays into the overall story. You equip in town and go on expeditions (quests) into the different dungeons. There is also an ultimate, or "Darkest Dungeon." But whereas most roguelikes have one giant endless or super-deep dungeon, our game features different locales.

I'm playing it right now and im really enjoying it. Though sometimes i want to play with out the stress of the difficulty level. I just get sad when i see my favorite hero die because they are always likely to do so. All they need to implement is a way to choose the difficulty level you want to play on

Jeremiah Fink Difficulty levels are the worst thing that ever happened to gaming. A good game needs to be optimized so that everyone has to play it well and be forced to learn how to play it well in order to progress. This is how games functioned in the 90s and it felt great. This is also why Souls series are doing so well. It makes you feel good about beating the game. My personal issue with the Darkest dungeon isn't the difficulty itself but the RNG that makes you lose by taking away control out of the players hands. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do about the fact that you're missing a bunch of consecutive hits and just lose.

The graphics style is great, and the whole stress system is awesome. The only gripe I have is that the game is sometimes unfair. How, exactly, am I supposed to fight 3 cultists and a tentacle monster with a traumatized cleric, a heavily injured crusader, a masochistic leper who won't stop cutting himself, and a cowardly highwayman?

Patrik Tripes The game itself explains that sometimes you have to retreat and abandon the quest. You can not always win. Sometimes you have to fire heroes too. It's just how it is. The game is not meant to be fair. It is meant to test your resolve in the face of despair and make hard decisions.

I like the concept of permadeath and harsh consequences in this grim setting, but I'm a little wary of it too. In X-COM losing someone a couple hours into the game could be recovered from, but losing a squad mate or two 20+ hours in could be devastating because new recruits couldn't statistically compete with the ever-evolving aliens. In DD, is it possible to take a new recruit to a low-level dungeon for some training, or will they have to follow and leach XP from the vets in their party?

the possibilities of this are endless. i'm very much reminded of my starting dnd games where my dm decided to use my inhumane bravery in darkest situations against me. eventually making me panic outgame and ingame.... i really look forward to this game. take your time, finetune as much as you feel is necesary...i'll be sitting here waiting patiently...throwing money at the screen. ps: I agree with a other commenter that a hardcore mode in wich sanity loss isn't visible to be a good idea.

This is only video game trailer I have seen that informed me of the story and the mechanics of game without showing the process of playing the game. Remarkable. Five years on and I still think few games have topped what the developers managed to accomplish as a whole with Darkest Dungeon.

Two things! 1) Is there any way you can shed light on how large a roster we can expect to manage? Like, will we have 4 man parties with 4 in reserve, or will it be like classic X-COM where you have a roster of 20 people? 2) Are there any plans for forum avatars in the near future? I'd love to be able to rock a Plague Doctor avatar on Steam and KZbin. But kick ass trailer, I've watched it probably a dozen times now. Can't wait for the Kickstarter campaign.

The idea that I like about this game is the random element of how your PCs react to what happens around them in a positive or negative manner. In computer RPGs usually the characters are already predetermined to what the writers want. In table top, the players themselves govern how their character reacts to a situation - whether they panic or rally or be selfish etc - and if the player is "playing in character" life can get both very interesting and never boring.
