Native Baltimorean here.I delivered to this area in the '80s,and it was funky even THEN. I delivered to Cookies Mens Clothing and to Simon Harris Sporting Goods which was a few blocks away from Old Town Mall. A guy I went to school with worked at an auto parts store in the area.I guarantee you they are all gone by now. Yes DEF you made history by getting out of there ALIVE. Thanks for the vid!

@@jeanlawson9133 that sounds so dumb. There's plenty of other ways for new history then tearing down these old beautiful buildings. Not to mention the craftsmanship, the artisanship, the quality, of these old buildings far far exceed anything else today. Born 1970. Grew up in the 80s with the all new then cable TV showing before unknown variety of US series - all new blockbusters in the cinemas. Today in my 50s i spend a lot of time in my workshop - restoring old tech from this time - and watch videos of the united states i admired so deeply back then. Like this one. I guess i am just an aging ( or old ) guy who tries to hold on to his younger years - where the US of A seemed to be the place to be or at least where ALL of it took place. To my British eyes this is so disturbing because the architecture is almost identical to any British high street today. Oh my gosh, bravo on a spectacular video. I don’t know if it’s because of The fine corner buildings that look like British banks or pubs, or the variations of heights between Georgian style stores and taller grander Victorian buildings next to them - or the scale - the streets are the same width as British roads so the scale is identical - if you’d just shown me clips of those streets I would have immediately said “WHERE in England is this m?! and WHY is it abandoned?! And HOW haven’t I known about it?!” We don’t have whole abandoned towns or places in the uk - the green belt laws prevented never ending urban sprawl and enforced cities to redevelop rather than grow out in a donut shape. The architecture and scale reminds me of Richmond High street in south London - one of the worthiest suburbs in the country, famous residents and very expensive stores It’s also where Ted lasso is filmed If this place had been preserved as a movie set to double for Great Britain it would be Baltimore getting those much needed Hollywood coins. This would be the perfect place to film a “28 days later” type apocalyptic movie set in Britain. Can I also add - as a Londoner I have noticed that late august it currently feels like there are millions of Americans in London right now spending their very welcomed dollars in our beautiful stores and looking round our old historical homes and other significant buildings. So WHY are you allowing your own beautiful historical architecture go to rot and ruin?! It makes no sense whatsoever .. You like a quick buck but that doesn’t mean a long buck ain’t worth the effort. This place should be saved. It looks like Shorditch in London - London’s MOST hip neighbourhood - that’s crawling with rich Americans (!) I give up But great video all the same 🎉🎉

This kind of stuff is based solely on revenue generation. What are you supposed to do when things decline? Pour money into something that is sucking you dry? I understand the sentiment but it just doesn't logically make sense. Despite the housing shortage we have no shortage of land. We're huge over here. London has limited space. And it's not just because of the laws. It has physical limitations, so it's almost necessary to not keep building out.

Without looking through 300 comments, I searched and found the top words in that building advertising sign painted on the side around the 7-minute mark: Isaac Benesch and Sons, a department store complex that started business in the 1880s. Isaac Benesch acquired nearby rowhouses and rebuilt them into his first department store. Can't read the words beneath the first line, could be other businesses, or maybe they describe Benesch's major merchandise lines.

To be clear, this area wasn’t developed as a “mall,” rather it was constructed as a typical commercial district of the 19th century, with storefronts along a public street. Through the early 20th century, it was probably a viable neighborhood, but declined with the rise of suburban shopping centers with their convenient parking lots and larger new stores. The remodel in the late 1960s shut down the car traffic and converted it to a “pedestrian mall,” a trend of that era to try to revitalize older commercial districts. The concept was to recreate the mall experience in existing urban areas and are found across the country.

A "Mall" was the term originally used in England/Early America which meant a street for strolling and or shopping. A "Mall" usually had some sort of green space and or divider in the middle as well (like the National Mall in Washington D.C.). In modern times the term was adopted to mean the modern equivalent - "The Mall"- ugly prefabbed, huge, indoor buildings with shops on either side, which you walk down the center of. Both indoor (also called an 'Arcade') and outdoor Malls have been around since Roman times.

Here in the UK signwriters were a very highly skilled trade (many still are, but the best are the traditional pub sign writers, we'll always need some of those), but now as ever fewer independent/non-franchised shops are on the Highstreet the quality of signage there has deteriorated and town centres have become soulless. I'm not surprised Amazon has taken over, since the 1980s traditional retail centres have become less and less diverse so there is no USP to tempt customers away from cheap and bland Chinese made rubbish. Chains don't need skilled signwriters, they get their crap from the local injection moulding plastics factories, same plastic signs selling the same crap products as Amazon for a slightly higher price (typically) on every Highstreet in the land.

@darthwiizius I agree 💯! I lived in England with my hubby (he's born & raised SE London), and we moved to Kent for awhile. It was a fun experience, and I loved doing it being an artist 🎨 😊!

The buildings look more like 1918 era. Once the roof starts leaking, the interior deterioration happens rapidly- plaster and lathe walls and ceilings start falling in, wood floors start rotting along with the joists, and pretty soon one floor or the roof collapses in and usually takes out more below.

I love history and old architecture/buildings. Each and every day they're getting rid of awesome historical things for this corny crap we have today. Great videos as always!!

I have been noticing that all people do is tear down these old buildings and put up these boring looking buildings. It makes me sick because these old buildings are way older and would out last these new buildings. The old buildings are Beautiful. Stop knocking down these old buildings and bring them back. You will never see anything like them again.

Bro, when were you there? I just shot a video there two days ago. I got coming out this coming Tuesday. We could’ve hooked up. Mine is only like four minutes. I’m sure yours is gonna be better. You got better equipment than I do. It was a little sketchy that day too.

The problem isn't the old buildings, new ones will not solve the issue and they will fail. The problem is the inhabitants of Baltimore. Not all, but some who make it unsafe to go there. You can put up all the new crap you want, but it will fail unless they fix the human issue. Thats what is destroying that place. Plenty of old building areas in cities and towns look like these but are thriving. Drive south about an hour down to Alexandria Virginia and visit the old town Alexandria which was a port town and the buildings and shops date back to before the Revolutionary War. These old buildings are still shops and restaurants that thrive. Why? they don't put up with the crap they do in Baltimore. I used to live on Greenmount Ave in Baltimore and the buildings there are the same. Heck, they even have spray painted the walls of some of the historic cemeteries on Greenmount such as where John Wilkes Booth is buried among others. Its sad to see the Old Town Mall decaying when it has potential if they'd just get their shyt together

The most charming and beautiful buildings should be renovated and preserved, turned into public spaces - cultural and educational. The drinking fountain should also be preserved!🤩🤩🧐😎

I actually had to carry a pager in the late 70's and early 80's, what a pain in the neck! There was no display, just a series of beeps and then a brief message over a speaker that wasn't very loud. It was rechargeable, but the duration of run time ob battery was only a few hours before it had to be docked again. Thankfully I got my first cell phone in the 1980's! It was huge, but leaps and bounds better than a pager!

Very interesting. Loved the video. They are beautiful. And I love doing the same activities myself in my vicinity. Have seen the most incredible character and charm remnants in old abandoned places in my region . I just love it . It is history , heritage , beauty , mystery and adventure all at once. Wish I was with you and appreciate the video. From a reference and records of the original architecture. Thankyou.

Great video! Glad you're helping preserve the past for the future! It does look like it's been cleaned up some and some buildings painted. Why the city doesn't at least mow and use the weed eater up and down that street. Probably a little Greek, Roman, and Gothic architecture going on there in that first building you liked with the columns. From what I read in a lot of places the people who came and started these cities brought a lot of the architecture from their old countries. A lot of the time different neighborhoods even had different building styles from one neighborhood to another depending on the make-up of the people in that neighborhood. It's so sad these once beautiful shops are falling down and unkept. At least there are a few that are still in business until the city is ready to throw up some more apartment buildings. Just hope they don't take down those really nice row houses on the other side of Old Town Mall.

How about they restore those buildings instead of tearing a bunch of history down because that's supposed to be a historical landmark and make it a mall again for nostalgic reasons. And another thing, one of my favorite metal bands is Nevermore..... RIP Warrell Dane, one of the best metal vocalist to ever live.
