I love this group. I am a 74yo woman. I just purchased a rowing machine and got it last week. I have worked out 3x already and am feeling all the muscles I forgot I had. I am up to 15 minutes. This video was great. I know I am leaning incorrectly and not sure of my breathing since I have tendency to hold my breath anyway. I am probably braking my arms as well. These videos are incredibly helpful for a newbie like me.

I'm a long-time masters rower - now 81 ... but alive-0, and passionate about rowing. My #1 fault that has never been explained as well as it has here is arm-break! One of the ways I've tried to fix this is at the catch, to slightly point my elbows toward one another & focus on being sure legs engage first ...

Hi Shane, not sure you realise, gather stats, etc but Dark Horse Rowing has got a very dedicated following that is spreading the word for you. eg. last night, on one the erging groups on Facebook, there was a regular newbie question about advice for beginners. Dark Horse had at least a dozen mentions with some having 10+ likes of confirmation. Plus a couple for Eric Murray and Asensei That all happened within a couple of hours of the post and Dark Horse plugs were coming from all over the world! Ergers are such a supportive bunch, whether they’re gym only, or on-water rowers too! Keep it up!

Everyone has their thing that they'll always have to work on. The hip swing can be challenging, sometimes it's good to work on it from a standing position to give yourself a different perspective. You can hold a broom stick against your back to help keep the spine straight and then practice hinging.

An old video, but it finally made it click for me. I was trying to get too much length at both the catch and the finish; sacrificing my heels down due to a lack of flexibility. I was struggling with pushing with the legs. All the effort I was feeling was in the arms and I was trying to be careful with the technique and I always ended up with bending my arms and pulling with my biceps a lot. That's until I realized that I have to like usually sit tall, lock my core, reach with the arms and not propel myself from the steps but push the SEAT back with my behind. This helped me so much. Even now, I just finished a session and feel my entire body buzzing 😍.

Excellent video, and the FIRST video I have watched since nabbing a Concept2 rower as a supplemental tool to my cycling. I have used a rower in the past (years ago) by just jumping on it and hacking way for 30 minutes trying to break the machine. And sweat. I did sweat but the machine survived repeated assaults... Anyway - I have worked for YEARS on my cycling techniques and understand how beneficial drilling can be even for what FEELS like an instinctive physical movement. It's just Rowing, right??? WRONG! I know I am breaking my arms too early - BUT - until this video, I thought that was what I was supposed to do. I appreciate the succinct and understandable explanations of correct form. I will be applying what I learned - AND - looking for more videos... Plus --- who couldn't use a new Tee Shirt? THANK YOU!

Issue #4 is my main problem (not saying that I’m perfect on all the other issues ; they appear once in a while...), but #4 is most prominent because I am 5’9 and 210 lbs, so overweight. When I try to lean forward to catch the 1 o’clock position, I found that I have to open my legs a little bit to give my little lovely belly (lolll) some space, otherwise it touches my thighs and I’m at the catch at 12 o’clock, and losing power. Don’t get me wrong ; I don’t open my legs on a V position, but just enough to have my knees just below my elbows (I have a 46.5 inches chest so some room there...). No knee problem so far. I know that it’s not the perfect position, neither the perfect stroke, but that’s what I have to do to compensate. One day this lovely fat will go away, but I’m 57 so becoming harder and harder to melt ! Great video !

In error #2, if you tend to bend your elbows because you feel you are not engaged enough to the machine early in the pull, you could instead achieve that engagement with straighter arms if you pull your shoulders back a bit at the beginning of the drive. It works for me and it feels very natural.
@DarkHorseRowing5 жыл бұрын
Try pulling the shoulders down instead of back as back will shorten your ROM. Down will keep your arm length but get the lats tightened.

I know that #5 is an issue to me (so on to the dedicated video) in that my technique is erratic; sometimes inhaling on the catch and sometimes the drive. Changes when I don't think about it and sometimes gets all confused when I do. Although as I'm rowing for 60 min sessions I guess I'm not holding my breath lol! Time to get the video out and record a session. Thanks, and I'll probably be reporting back on my other mistakes once I've reviewed.
