I commend you for making a video on the subject as enforcement of emissions equipment on diesels is being ramped up.I am a diesel mechanic I work on mostly heavy trucks Macks international freight liner,I owned 4 diesel pick ups myself,Once the DPF came out I stopped buying diesel trucks. Some of your information is a little bit incorrect and I would like to make you aware of it. You stated that DEF fluid was brought out because people were complaining about poor fuel mileage.DEF fluid came out because there was no other way to reduce NOX emissions enough to meet tier 4 final Emissions levels without it. International Did not use def fluid until 2015 they use a very high percentage of EGR from 2011 to 2014 to supposedly meet tier 4. final emissions.Their trucks did not meet emissions standards ,eventually international was fined a tremendous amount of money, I believe that the only reason they let the company stay in business is because they were such a high percentage of their trucks that are school buses and municipal trucks and if the company was put out of business it would have a huge effect on the entire trucking industry.Not only did they not make the emissions without it the EGR coolers failed an alarming rate because you’re running a very high percentage of egr was causing egr coolers to crack sometimes every 8-10,000 miles, and it was causing engine oil to be contaminated very quickly. By using Def fluid, The auto makers were able to drastically cut the amount of EGR needed this helps keep the engine oil cleaner , and reduce the pressure on the EGR cooler and cooling system of the engine.The other mistake you stated was that DEF is injected while the truck is in regen or burning off, That is true but DEF is also injected anytime the engine is up to temperature it’s injected slowly insteadily. The systems are getting better they are now installed on new trucks as a module containing the DIesel oxidizing Catalyst,The DPF and the DEF injector nozzle. One area where big trucks and light pick ups differ is the way they inject the diesel fuel large trucks use what’s called a doser behind the turbo charger,I think the Duramax uses this as well I know that early Fords used extra fuel in cylinders seven and eight, That just washed down those cylinders and ate the rings. The doser injector is a way better system. In United States while it may be legal locally in certain areas do not have an emissions inspection it is still illegal in all 50 states to remove any emissions control device from any vehicle for on road purposes. Here in New York commercial truck inspectors know what to look for if you have a 2008 and newer truck and you’re right rear fender has soot on it,And you’re driving in Rockland County or further south where they have DEMA ,which is “diesel emissions metropolitan area” regulations, you may get pulled over and inspected. I personally can’t stand the DEF systems, They have caused our large plow trucks to go down like you said for weeks at a time, our trucks are kind of important m since they’re plowing town roads are they useless sitting on the side of the road idling with a triangle on the dash board. .I have to go out with a scanner and do a forced regen ,Which can take up to 45 minutes in order to just be able to drive the truck back to the shop. Unfortunately this happens with brand new trucks like you said the cold weather and the roads are are not friendly with DEF heaters or lines.

Gotta correct a couple things on the oe emissions side. The dpf is for particulate matter(soot). The regen process raises the temp in the dpf to burn off that soot. On Ram trucks, this is done if too much differential pressure is sensed across the dpf and on an engine hours basis. On my def equipped trucks, this was about every 24 engine hours. On my pre-def Rams it was less than every 10 engine hours. DEF is injected into the catalyst after the dpf & is not used for cleaning the soot or in the regen process in any way. It reacts with the catalyst to remove NoX emissions. This allows for less egr to be used on def equipped trucks. Less egr = less soot= less regen’s.

Def is added to the exhaust to work in conjunction with the egr and the cat to reduce NOx emissions through selective catalytic reduction, thats why the def system is sometimes called the scr system. its not for cleaning the particulate filter, the truck either cleans that through passive regeneration (naturally high egt to burn the soot out) or active regeneration (artificially high egt from extra fuel being added to the exhaust stroke) if theres too much soot load on the filter and not enough passive regen. but yah def fluid isnt for the filter and the reason it helps with performance like fuel mileage is because the engine can use less egr to reduce nox emissions which hinders power and efficiency and instead pump def into the exhaust to catalyze the nox.

Def fluid doesn't burn, and is injected pretty much all the time, when it heats up in the exhaust in neutralizes/reduces the amount of NOX In the exhaust. He's 100% right on deleting it I will speak from experience if you delete the EGR cap it off because the a little electrical motor that opens and closes the gears can become brittle and break and your EGR valve can get stuck half open or all the way open or you'll get lucky and be closed just cap it off and tune it I know this because I put a barometric pressure sensor that told the EGR to stay closed and it got stuck half open and I dissected the EGR and found that the gears were all stripped out where the motor was for opening and closing the valve no BS and this was on a semi truck same s*** is on all the pickup trucks except for my 7.3 😎

Unfortunately, you have to do it all, or nothing. There are so many sensors involved, just doing the tune, or removing the emissions items individually would cause other issues. Removing/upgrading the physical "parts", allows the engine to breathe/operate normally... Re-tuning the computer tell it "everything's fine, nothing to see here."

Another reason not to delete is the smell and smoke sucks for me. But beyond that, it’s highly carcinogenic. When you get those particles into your lung it stays I’m telling you you’re gonna have to learn what chemo is if you’re not careful. If you have a modern diesel like he says the mission system is way more refined. You get the low pressure EGR and you get the after DPFEGR systems which are already filtered out before they enter the engine so you don’t get anywhere near the suit that you normally would, now the older ones I understand they can be a headache. The best thing to do is to change your oil frequently regardless of new or old and send in your oil for lab testing to see what’s going on with it. You have to run the best oil you can and your research on that. After my warranty, I’m going to be running redline diesel oil. I love my modern eco-diesel GEN three with all the emissions systems intact. I even picked up 57 hp with the Derringer and 73 foot pounds of torque from banks. I’m keeping an eye on everything, so I’m good with the emission system.

Def fluid has nothing to due regens, or soot. Def only changes the chemical make up of your exhaust by converting harmful exhaust gasses into harmless gasses. Again DEF fluid has absolutely nothing to do with soot reductions.
@karlheinzvansteen57483 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jumper here, the DEF fluid consists of Urea and water. The nozzle sprays the def fluid into the exhaust to kill off the nitrous oxide gases from the exhaust (NO2). The regen starts when the engine ECU send more diesel towards the DPF and starts the burn off that way.

No matter how you look at it the DPF systems are here to stay and the penalty is steep if you remove it. If you want a diesel pickup you just have to deal with it. A friend runs a stealth tuner that’s designed to work with DPF emissions system. If I buy a new one down the road I’ll just run the stealth tuner with DPF system. Power and mileage increase can be pretty substantial after deleting.

Pre def trucks inject fuel on the exhaust stroke to burn out the soot on the dpf filter. Causing 1600+ degree heat to run through the exhaust and the turbo as well as causing poor milage. That’s what the big issue with 6.4s failing turbos. Also why deleting increased milage because no more burning fuel to clean the dpf

Jim Matteo diesels are more efficient than gasoline engines. Every engine should be a Diesel engine. If you have the correct air/fuel ratio they don’t pollute that much. My older 2007 diesel truck makes absolutely no black smoke. Not even under load or hard acceleration. NOX isn’t a problem unless you wrap your mouth around the tailpipe with the truck running. I’m a regional supplier for GM dealers and each dealer on average orders at least one DPF system each week. That tells me all I need to know about how unreliable it is. If the truck isn’t under warranty open up the wallet when the part numbers fly.
