I commend you for taking the time to break this down for everyone. I own a small delivery service in New York and lease 4 Diesel Clean air certified medium duty delivery trucks. We have been fined numerous times for performing a manual regen while making deliveries in city conditions. New York has deputized any citizen who can video a truck running for 3 or more minutes. They fill out an affidavit and submit the video and they will receive 20% of any fine that is paid. (fines start at $300 and goes up to $1,000-) per incident. It's all about the $$$$$$$$ . Any diesel engine driver knows when the warning light comes on you better regen it before it goes into shut down mode and then its a must to bring into the shop. Personally I own a 2019 Nissan Titan with a 5.0 cummins and love the truck. I tow a 38ft RV around the country and you don't even know its behind the truck. At 51,000 miles my check engine light came on and when I brought it to the dealer they told me the Particulate filter needed to be replaced. I assumed this would be covered under the 100,000 mile drivetrain but NO it's only warranted for 50,000 miles. After back and forth between the dealer and Nissan they finally agreed to front the cost of replacement ($7,250) 22,000 miles later the check engine light comes on again....UGGGH-- This time Nissan would only cover 40% of the cost as the part was only warrantied for 1 year after installation.. So this cost me $3250 out of pocket.. This has nothing to do with the environment!! If we could FOLLOW THE MONEY the picture would be crystal clear. The reast of the world including China and India do things that are way more harmful to the environment they we could ever do. I feel your pain and the hard working tax payers of this country need to take a stand and fight the nonsense laws instated by the corrupt politicians in offiice!!

I am an industrial engineer at one of the bigger manufacturers of these devices, our plant makes 3-5,000 catalytic converters and 250+ DPFs per week, so I'll throw my .02 in here as well. Gasoline engine owners: There is virtually no reason for you to remove your catalyst from your vehicle. We flow test every brick that leaves our plant and if they have more than 1-2% restriction in flow they fail and are crushed, mind you this is with CPSI's far in excess of what your engine can produce. Before you rip me apart, yes, if you start adding turbos and nitrous your flow will eventually exceed what that stock brick can handle, that's why they make racing cats and you should be using them. Remember how people used to kill themselves by letting their car idle in the garage? You cannot do that with a modern car, its impossible. That's how efficient these cats are now and without getting too deep into the chemistry, that should tell you what you are breathing in an open exhaust situation. Diesel guys: Rip that shit off. There is no good solution currently available for you. The EPA has done something it should have never done, which is write policies without a viable market solution. EVERY DPF will eventually get clogged and fail. All of them. You cannot clean them, and shouldnt attempt to. When you 'clean' these things by spraying them with water or air, you are busting the PGM off the substrate, when that happens, shit gets hot QUICK. Throw in a regen cycle and start dumping unburnt fuel into the catalyst and they will literally melt the monolith and plug = bye bye turbskies. The SCR situation is not much better, and JH is absolutely on point when it comes to that fucking DEF fluid. Its a poor solution that passes the buck on to the consumer and its ethically wrong to require it. I want our planet clean, but I want accountability for the MAIN CAUSES like Chinese and Indian manufacturing facilities. When I see parades of National Guard Humvees and people carriers moving down the highway with no emissions whatsoever, and then see our government wrecking American companies like this, frankly we have lost our way.
@DeltaOps33 жыл бұрын
I applaud your sense of sanity because I believe you have some among these people. But isn't the emission system clogging by capturing the volatiles actually better tham all of it venting to atmosphere at a microscopic level? Also I feel putting emissions on military vehicles is a pretty risky move considering people put their lives on the vehicles being 100% reliable and easy to maintain, anywhere. Not to mention they arent nearly as common as your everyday diesel truck. There was actually a program I thought to make humvees more economical and powerful ended up falling through because it was far too heavy to make the vehicle perform well enough because of course they had to over build it to be hyper reliable. Make no mistake... diesels have improved. They have gotten more expensive and complicated, but their efficiency has improved leaps and bounds. Dont forget trucks twice the size of those in the 90s are getting over double to fuel economy and power. In fact the government still offers tax deductions I thought because they are still seen as an efficient design.

And when these trucks regen, the fumes are nauseous. We've had drivers taken to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning in truck stops from the fumes pulled in thru the climate system. In 2005 I purchased a fleet of Peterbilt conventional road trucks @ $106k ea....today that same truck runs $180k - $200k depending on specs. We now spend on avg 3.8 million a year on DEF, again for these trucks to live in the shop. I've learned alot in the last few weeks, and NOT to store the def fluid in the bed of my truck, but it's all so freaking ridiculous. I'm a little late to the party as I'm somehow just now discovering your channel...and this video. Great video and I'm now subscribed. I've been laughing for years now every time I see a carboard box with a plastic jug inside of it sitting on a shelf thousands of miles away from where it was produced. Yep, saving the environment....one carboard box and plastic jug at a time. We also have to think about all the emissions created by making these additional, unnecessary parts. My 1999 F350, 7.3PS got 18-20MPG not towing a trailer. My 03, 05 and 06 6.0 PS got 14MPG at best and cost thousands to keep running. My 99 with less emissions was way cleaner by the simple fact it got more MPGs. We also need to discuss the manufacturers: they didn't fight increased emissions standards as the more parts they put on a vehicle the more they make when they sell a vehicle. In addition, they also knew they would be making more profit on selling parts for repairs and service as the vehicles are now less reliable. It is easy for them to say to the consumer. "sorry there is nothing we can do. The government is making us do this." They should have fought this but they were greedy. In the late 90's the idiots at the EPA did a study that determined a gallon of diesel fuel put out more emissions than a gallon of gasoline and demanded something be done. I think anyone that had ever been around a diesel engine could see that. What the idiots should have done however, was compare the emissions per mile driven (in comparable vehicles/conditions) and they would have seen that modern diesels actually emit fewer emissions. This entire journey to make "cleaner diesels" has been about money and power form day 1!

I am looking for a way to make this problem go away, and when I see how much a new DPF costs, I am sold on doing deletes and still be money ahead. I bought the 1 Ton truck so I can pull a big camper when my wife and I retire in a year, to travel and see the United States, and I need a dependable truck, so deletions is the path I am going, its my truck, so I will make it do what I need it to do, if the EPA wants to cover the cost of the emissions for the life of the truck, then I would keep it since they are going to maintain it...I have even taken the DPF off and cleaned it out, welded new bungs and put in new OEM heat sensors, checked the differential pressure lines, found one line on top of the engine plugged so I opened it up. I have read so many blogs looking for the golden answers. I like the truck, I really like the power this truck has, but I want it to burn efficiently and clear. Sign the RPM act...I did...

As an independent shop owner & diesel mechanic for 45 + yrs experience I can remember back in the 80's the EPA use to drive around and offer large sums of cash for a shop to cut the catalytic converter out of the system and replace it with a bypass pipe, then the shop & mechanic are faced with fines & litigation for doing the deed. I also remember a big law suit back in the 70-80's where most of the mechanics sued Allison Detroit for health issues for breathing in diesel exhaust fumes from an engine that was running in the shop. Allison Detroit basically proved in court that the only thing that comes out of the exhaust is soot & sulfur, soot is basically an irritant and sulfur help makes it rain, now there's no sulfur, or low sulfur, along with devices to re-burn exhaust gases/fumes and then add DEF to help it burn and who knows what heath hazards exist the DEF only time will give us the answer. In my opinion the EPA can claim they're saving the planet, but it's only about putting people & businesses in a trick bag to make $$$. Now all the EPA has to do is search the internet looking for people that make a video on how to remove, or delete this or that, or the vehicle owner who's listed there vehicle for sale and they list all the delete's & mod's in the listing, so "if" & "when" the EPA does show up it's kind of difficult to argue the evidence against you so most people settle to pay the fines & penalties that have been reduced. My solution to the situation is I make sure all my diesel powered vehicles & equipment is pre-emissions years that still use mechanical fuel injection systems. Yes my vehicles are not brand new and shinny, however you decide which vehicle turns more heads $20,000 brand new vehicle or an older vehicle that's had $20,000 worth of restoration done to it? Also allot of farmers are going back to restoring older tractors that are pre-emissions to avoid all the headaches & B.S. that comes with the newer equipment , excavation companies are doing similar things also, however the EPA will always have a job of finding companies & people to hem up with violations to make the $$$ because people have to continue to have the brand-new & shiny instead of sticking with the older vehicles & equipment. Ok, Key board Warriors, Haters, & Global Warming Advocates your turn, when you do please show how the EPA has contributed to actually help save the planet buy planting trees, developing clean water & soil ect-ect instead mandating this or that.

I'm a heavy duty diesel tech and factory trained on DPF and DEF systems. I'm also a licensed NJ diesel emissions person. You do make alot of good key points. The frustrations of the systems not working correctly from customers run high. So first why was the EGR valve mandated around 2007 then eventually 2011 all diesels needed to have DEF. It was not because of soot emissions. Heck a 1998 Freightliner with a Detroit 60 series would only have a opacity of 3 or 4 and 20 was the max allowable limits before failing a test. So diesel engines were already clean as far as diesel smoke or opacity. These components were introduced to reduce NOx which is a cancer causing agent. Now this would have been fine IF they worked. However the diesel engine industry was rushed from having hardly any restrictions into heavy pollution controls. It took years before we had reliable cars with pollution standards. Car pollution standards developed over a long time from 1972 til now. Diesel trucks pollution standards didn't start til 2007 but was forced to come up to the same standards in a much shorter time. I always said the diesel engines now are where gas engines were in the 80's with smog pumps and other useless components. Over time the technology got better and gas engine don't use smog pumps. The bad part is that diesel is a much dirtier fuel than gas so at this point the emissions training schools are saying they can't come up with anything else to meet the emissions standards. So you asked why us, easy because the EPA mandates On Road Vehicles always first. They did go after off road too. The farmers here now have John Deere tractors with EGR and SCR systems. Any new locomotives now must meet Tier 4 emissions. All newly manufactured construction equipment must have EGR & SCR. Reefer units lowered their horsepower to get around the emissions standards. Off road is getting mandates just at a much slower rate. So why can't you modify any emissions vehicle with a VIN. Because the government made it illegal to modify any emissions system. If you want to build something either do it from scratch or find a old 70's vehicle. Finally yeah I was just as surprised at what the US Military runs as you were. I had a military person who is a diesel tech in the military show me he was swapping out a Cummins VT903 V-8. Those disappeared from on road trucks 30 years ago. No emissions at all and just exhaust pipes on the manifolds. But in the same token I wouldn't want to be in a war with emissions vehicles if I had to stop and perform a regen while under enemy fire lol. Trust me I'm not for this mess either but if the technology actually worked I don't think it would have been a big deal. The EPA did give out warnings across the board they would crack down on shops making emissions mods and selling components to defeat emissions. They are also going after companies that produce delete kits. Right now as you mentioned gas power is not were it needs to be either in torque. School bus companies frustrated with diesel emissions not working as designed went gas powered. From people I know they have just as many problems with check lights and no power. It's a mess. But I was told at this time there will not be any more future mandates and they would stay the same for diesels because the Gov will push for electric vehicles. Our local trash companies went all natural gas made from landfills. Some days I pull out my hair fixing these diesel emissions trucks. The biggest problem I have seen is idling. If you need to have a pick up that will be on the job site idling alot buy gas power. It's a bad situation all the way around. But I understand your argument of how other countries and machinery don't have the same standards. Like you also said it has been proven where more fuel resources are being use for these mandates creating more emissions yet creating a endless cycle.

It is still all about money and power. And control. We biult deisel engines in the very first few years of combustion engines. That were producing near zero emissions. And in the great quest to make things better they have only muddled it all up. First off deisel emissions will never kill you try licking yourself in a garage with an idling gas car in an hour your dead. You can stay in there all night with a deisel idling and still be alive albeit with a headache and stuff sinuses. But alive. It's just like when Duponts patents ran out on there R 12 all of a sudden it was bad for the environment just politics freinds nothing to it no actual facts just smoke and mirrors you should be tired of it but it makes a living doesn't it. Yup thats what everyone keeps saying. Till there's no were left to give. Then we all still wind up fighting in the end. My point is this has zero credibility. Especially when earth's emissions are 100 times the output of man-made e missions. It's just about corporations that own the economy you and me and your children and they want total control compliance and domination in all things you will not be allowed to walk down the street. We need to stop looking at science that is not there. We are already in way to deep it's time we stop pretending it's all OK. And end this and start over like we did 250 years ago only we do it better this time term limits limits on how many states you can serve in and how many years you can serve. And stop paying the politicians an over the top salary. They should get a meter salary and still work a full time job just as our founding fathers did this corporate government bs is getting old. We must all come togather or we all loose.

Diesel isn't necessarily a dirtier fuel than gasoline. It's more about how the fuel is introduced to the cylinder. GDI engines make just as much soot as a well tuned diesel.

Their goal was to recirculate exhaust 2x to get a more complete burn but nobody thought about soot plugging intakes. Add dpf (2010 emissions)in it intakes clogged drivers steady pushing throttle more and more every day dpf clogging more and more blowby starts happening its a mess. The days of 400k diesel pick ups are over any truck with 120k slight blowby clogged egr ports will be major problems and I feel sorry for anybody buying used diesels right now. @vdub58183 жыл бұрын
It's really hilarious. They added in the DPF to remove DPM aka soot. Despite the fact soot is a very heavy particle and falls on the ground within approximately 50ft of where it is emitted. So we add the DPF to catch the soot, then burn it off with a diesel injector in the exhaust. Yes, burn more fuel to save emissions?!?! However burning the soot off creates excess NOX, which is gaseous and goes straight to the atmosphere. So then we add in a SCR and a DEF injection system to deal with excess NOX. All of this to remove a tiny amount of soot, that literally does not pollute the air. The factory pollution to create all of these items 100% do more damage to the world than just burning diesel as normal. Precisely because once we do all these things, diesels still emit pollution. It's not like these systems eliminate it completely. All of this doesn't even factor in how many of these parts will have to be replaced over lifetime of the vehicle, and the associated pollution to the production of said parts.

Unfortunately we think that humanity has progressed in the area of equality but we aren’t much different to the times of kings, queens, emperors, czars etc. Most modern societies still have a ruling class and the working/slave class and what class you’re born into is a bigger factor on your chances of living a successful happy life than your intelligence or how hard you work. If you don’t believe that look at some of the people that have made it to the position of being the most powerful person in the free world. Whatever your political beliefs I think you would have to agree that some, maybe even many, US presidents didn’t make it to the position because of their intelligence and the situation is the same throughout the world.
