Don´t believe the hype. It´s not the gun, it´s the shell. The M777 firing dumb rounds is as inaccurate as anything else out there. Weather conditions are what rules the accuracy. Little wind, good chance of a hit. Heavy winds, and it lands a mile away. Hundreds of these were destroyed in Ukraine, because they just can´t defend from counter-battery fire, and loitering munitions. In fact, they are so complex and finnicky, that even a pistol round can render it useless. And they were not meant for the fire rate that the Ukraine war is demanding of each gun. Soviet guns have fired thousands of rounds after its expected barrel life, and they are still firing. While as the M777´s components ware down after just a few dozen! And this is being said by the ukrainians themselves, it is not "russian propaganda". It is the Excalibur shell that is lethal. But the russians have their own, called Krasnopol, that is just as accurate. The Excalibur is being used with a GPS guidance, which means it can´t hit a moving target, and the ukrainians lack a drone with laser designator, which is what the russians have for their shell. I have seen insane Krasnopol shots of moving targets, that would make your skin crawl.

The Armstrong guns during the Victorian era. 18pdr in WWI. 25pdr, 5.5in, 3.7AA guns in WWII . The 105mm Light Gun and this gun.

Lightweight, towed artillery like the M777 is a specialized tool, employed by air mobile arty battalions. Regular mechanized infantry and armor formations are normally supported by M109 self-propelled howitzers in the same 155mm size. Towed arty is vulnerable to counter battery fires, since it can't shoot and shoot like SP cannons can.

True, but counter battery fire response creates an ambiguous window of time. The M109(?) s/b good at shoot and scoot. M270s too, but munitions costs and stockpile may come into play. The 155mm howitzer was not that often used. The 155mm howitzer is a must have for infantry. As I ha lve said many times before. You want Artillery at your six, you must have forward observers embeded in your unit. Together your enemy just vanishes, in little pieces. Your sons, brothers, get to come home. This philosophy has nowcl extended both Naval and Air Force as well.

Modern army's have radar, once a artillery peice or battery fire , the other side can triangulate the source / location of the fire and return the favour, usually within minutes . That's why only a few army's, with very specific requirements and the means/ recourses and circumstances use them. The Indian army uses them in the mountains and jungles. But in the plains or deserts it could be rather sticky.

0:54 The crew has a lot to do with it. Look at the dude on the left do a Superman jump onto the gun as soon as it fires. Yow. Not mentioned is the 777's ability to fire at least five shells (I saw 7 in a different report) in under a minute using different trajectories such that they all arrive on the target at the same moment - a true one-gun time-on-target. Imagine three 777s doing that to a single target - 15 to 21 shells landing simultaneously in your midst - terrifyingly effective. That much firepower arriving at the same instant must be absolutely shattering, literally and psychologically. Then the 777 is gone in 3 minutes so no counter-battery fire is possible. Assuming you can even think after a time-on-target like that! Well done to the BAE-USA partnership!!!

I was part of the first class of Marines to train on these. All in all, these are much better to run than the M198, but I doubt enough to be worth the cash. After all, these take the same truck, the same crew size, and might be a tad faster to take down, but not very much. These are more useful for deploying by air, but even then, you need a truck to move them, so counter battery would still kill you. Given 15 years ago or so, really, really nice arty (edit: the Archer) that is its own truck came out, can fire the same rounds, can shoot and scoot way faster, and only requires a crew of 2 (edit: I was wrong, it's 3), why would you use these under most circumstances? I still don't get it. I guess it's technically less expensive for the weapon, but if it gets taken out, you've likely lost more soldiers and that's really expensive. I guess the M777 should break down less often, but that's not much if you lose them (and your soldiers) to counter battery. Any tech you can have on one of these can be put onto a self-powered gun, so that's not an advantage.

Did you know we can make(have already done so) smooth bore barrels made from kevlar, titanium, and lined with Chromium for a fraction of the weight of traditional barrels with an exit velocity of over 7500ft/s(2300m/s)? This gives a range greater than 100nm. We have been able to do this since the early 1990's. Ramjet is extra complexity.
