Laymon was incredible. Night in the Lonesome October. After Midnight. In the Dark. The Stake. Funland. Just typing the names makes me want to re read them. Man I wish he was still around.

Female here, and absolutely love, love, love Laymon! Maybe it's because I grew up in the 70s, and love the whole slasher genre, but I really appreciate an author who writes characters as real people, not as PC pansies. And Laymon was one of those wonderful, gritty authors who really went for it, no holds barred. His books have a very Grindhouse feel to them, kind of like if Koontz (who I also love) and Tarantino had a love child together. I'm definitely an ardent fan of his icky-amusing prose. Pro Laymon!

Another phenomenal review, Leon! This is one of my favorite Laymon books, the fourth or fifth of his I read. Really cool idea, really fun execution (especially the truth about who Butler actually is). :)

i read this not too long ago. my first laymon book. i really enjoyed it. i wish he would have went into more of that chick and the guy she was living with, though. loved the ending, though, even if it felt kind of cheap.

Wonderful review Leon. I Haven't read the book yet, but I will if I can find it cheap. I'm pro Laymon like you and really enjoyed The Traveling Vampire Show, In the Dark, and Night In the Lonesome October and you make me want to read them again. I was going to ask your favorite Laymon books but I guess I'll anticipate the list this summer. Do you have the book In Laymon's Terms about Laymon that I have and I eagerly plan to read. I also have Resurrection Dreams, Body Rides, and Bite which I haven't read yet so maybe I'll have a Laymon June of reading.

Laymon is one of the main reasons I wanted to read horror. The last Laymon book I read was Into The Fire aka The Glory Bus, wow. Reminded me of The Hills Have Eyes meets Natural Born Killers. I honor my Laymon membership 😎. Good review. Long Live, LAYMON!

Gotta say man, I respect and delight in your don't - give- a- fuck punk rock literary attitude lol. Your recommendations sit very well with me, as I've purchased several ( Satan's Mistress, Midnight, Mirror, The Bad Room, Live Girls, What's Wrong with Valerie?, to name a few. I've just started on Death Song by Douglas Borton) I have yet to read Laymon, however but I'm excited now to rectify that. The closest of his peers I am familiar with is Jack Ketchum; I've read many if his novels and quite a few short stories, may he rest in peace. I know Ketchum always touted Laymon. I was thinking of starting on Laymon with this one or Resurrection Dreams..Guess I'll have t o get both! Anyway, keep up the great work!! Peace out bro.

I've never read a laymon book. I've looked at a few like this one and just wasn't sure if he was for me. But you make it all sound very tantalising. Where did you go? last video was a long time ago! That top 5 list would be cool!

Richard Laymon took some time to grow on me. He is a very, acquired taste. I read The Cellar when I was like 14 - 15, and it really turned me off. The constant rape and pedo plotline just felt distasteful. Couldn't stomach it and I put it down. BUT Then I read 'One Rainy Night' about 2 years ago - about 10 years after trying 'The Cellar' - and I was like, 'Ah! I get him now!' Loved him and could not put him down. I've gone back to Beast House series and I guess at least got some morbid enjoyment out of them, even just if laughing at how ridiculous and over the top things get. This is definitely next on my list, I think my parents have a copy of it floating around somewhere at their house.

“Morbid enjoyment” is a good way to put the entertainment value of Laymon.

Just something about certain words and phrasing in that synopsis that sound British to me. Thank god for the Brits to have published Laymon back when no one else was giving him the time of day.

Laymon is so far from I am reading is very hit or miss for me but he does have a distinct style and I did notice he can rush at times when if he just let some room to breath it would make even his weaker work more strong. But I do want to collect some of his work, I already ordered Beware and next paycheck I am going to pick up Funland which I hear is a good one. I may pick this up too if I have the cash I notice some novels tend to be expensive and others more affordable.
