I bought a 1989 model in 2014. It only had 4,002 miles on it. Was last registered in 1991 and still had the stock tires on it. I have put 24,000 miles on it and it is ready for a refresh. Going to do upgrades that make it better. Better forks and brakes. New clutch. Carbs rebuilt and full tuneup. This was my dream bike in 1989 as a 20 year old. Now at 56 I still turn and look at her as I walk away.

I have a blue black and white 90 model. Same as 89. I also had to replace some rubber parts on the carburators. And foot rubber pegs several times. Same with brake calipers and tyres every so often. Adding half a liter of oil every once in a while is a must. Apart from that, and the golden silencer with the exact Yamaha model, I had not a single other issue in all these years. I use 120/60 front instead of the stock 130/60. Heavy, but super powerful and... highest quality!

I had seven of these (after another) in the '90s. Due to the fact I was riding all year and had no car, the bikes came fast to 70.000 km. When I reached them, I sold the bike and bought another used one with max. 10-15.000 km. The first was the '92 model with the upside-down-fork, which I lost in a deer accident with 140 km/h on the german Autobahn. The bike was completely destroyed, but thank to my guardian angel nearly nothing happened to me. After this I always bought the 1990-Model (3LE) with the two round headlights. I had 3 in red-white-blue, a complete blue one, a silver one and, as the last, a black one, which was sold on eBay to a MD from Romania... Then I stopped because of the 2nd child. At it's time the FZR 1000 was THE bike and I loved it. The bike shown in the vid is an early model, produced at the end of the '80s (2LA?) Then, in last october, after 20 years of painfully missing a bike, I started riding again. For my comeback I bought a 32-year old Kawasaki GPZ 500 S which I rode during the winter, since last week I own a blue '98 Kawasaki ZX-9R Ninja. Best bike I had so far.

I'm currently restoring a 1987 FZR1000 Genesis in Canada right now. Found it in a sea-can so it's not technically a barn find but "can-find" doesn't have the same ring. Mine was sitting for 18 years but it was nearly all there and almost all of it was original. Spent a year so far on the hunt down for the hard to find parts but it's coming along. Before I started the restoration I was able to get the engine running and it sounds so beautiful. Yamahas always make the best sounding bikes.

I own one from 1990. Same 89 model. Stock Yamaha golden silencer. But I use 120/60 front tire and modified forks to adjust at zero, 10mm or 20mm shorter in order to improve agility. The bike is very heavy. I consider it as a highway bike, not a sportbike. Wife and I have traveled a lot. Long distances around Europe. Around 500 km a day in 4 hours of drive, stopping once or twice. 200 km can be made easy in an just one hour at the right roads and traffic conditions. I find it positive to have a lot of my body weight on my arms for long distances, very much the same as a bicycle made for very many hours on the road. I normally use 16 teeth front sprocket. Stock is 17 teeth, good only for long distance tours, and I have tested 15 which is very sporty. Wheels are strong but too heavy. Front brakes could be better. I have to add half a liter of oil every once on a while. Every 1000 km on average. More often, if riding all the way to 11,000 rpm. Suspension is alright with the 43mm non inverted front shock absorbers. Rear suspension works better at maximum extended length. Engine runs smooth from 2000 to 10000rpm in an incredible 5 to 1 ratio. You can drive comfortably without changing gears between 50 and 250 km/h. It feels... infinite. Acceleration is amazing. 0 to 100 in less than 3 seconds and 150 to 250Km/h in an instant! 290 can be seen on speedometer, but it does not feel good above 250. All in all, I consider it's a heavy but very powerful and wonderful motorcycle. Highest quality!

I have a 1990 and she been apart for years now but when she was running I had put a 1070 kit on the bike and she was quit a nasty girl from the a pipe and jet kit days felt like riding a GSXR 1000 now I like to do more to it rods oversize stainless valves lighten crank and some head work I had it ported and polishes but some bronze valve guides would be nice a six speed trans out of a 750 yamaha like a yzf 750 or fz750 under cut would also do the trick and cams from a yzf 750 I hear work too but it all takes $$$$$

Jag var så nära att köpa en 1000cc av yamaha (minns inte exakt märkning) i somras innan det blev den lilla gula :D Men den var såld :/ Lite glad att det inte blev en sådan dock. Min rygg hade dött :D
