While the city of St. Canard may have thousands of criminals reign, luckily the city has a shadowy protector who hunts them like a phantom in the darkness. I love how it finally explains why Launchpad is with Darkwing at St Canard, rather than with Scrooge at Duckburg. With Della back, they could easily have her fly the Sunchaser. Scrooge may even fund Darkwing as he does with Gizmoduck, thus still having Launchpad employed.

I know it's probably not canon but I like my head canon too much: Drake was a theater kid, he was in the drama club, wrote the scripts, directed and did the costumes and then decided to be a superhero.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful Issac. I love how the reboot Ducktales tells a creative story of Drake’s origin, I love the nod to the original voice actor (Jim Cummings) calling him Jim Starling. Overall, Darkwing is a favorite and I love how all these afternoon shows we grew up on is in the same “universe.”

I don't like the "same Universe" thing. I think most of those shows can stand on thier own. It's not the MCU. Hopefully they dont continue to have Talesspin and Rescue Rangers associations. They dont need be launched by Ducktales. They all have strong characters and stories to stand alone.

I know Tad Stones wanted Darkwing to have multiple backstories as a nod to Silver Age comics doing the same thing, but I guess you could argue that all of them could fit together like building blocks. Well, except for the 'secret origin' since that was kind of a wildcard, and the 'actors on a set' episode may have been a completely out there scenario. Either way, it's still a great source of entertainment from my favorite Disney Afternoon show. And yes, I absolutely love how the "Ducktales" reboot handled Darkwing Duck, especially after the recent special.

Stones is Old school Comic book fan! He did point out Flash stories where he ran to an alternate universe was the reason for DW to have multiple backstories, It was intentional to not have continuity for the character.

Yeah, I think the most "realistic" (i.e. least ridiculous) one in the 1990s series is from "Clash Reunion", where high school Drake Mallard becomes Darkwing for the first time in order to face Elmo Sputterspark, who has just become empowered as Megavolt.

I personally like to think that the first 3 mentioned in this video are the same backstory, just spread through the years. Drake first found his desire to be a superhero when he met his future self, revolved his crime fighting tactics around the S.H.U.S.H. agent, and the High School fight with Megavolt was his first battle against a villain and the birth of his first costume.

I have a theory: The original Darkwing Duck does not play in one Universe but in multiple Universes that seems just kinda simliar to the watcher. 1. The Multiverse is proven: On many points in the show Darkwing Duck is entering many Universes. He goes into the Nega-Verse where everything is the opposite. This is, as the name says, a negative Universe. In another episode we see a so called future version of Darkwing in where he is edgy and a dictator. This is a Dark-Multiverse where Darkwing does not become Negaduck but a dark turn makes him insane. He also has a "timetravelling" Tip top which helps him to travel to other Universes. In one Universe is a society of intelligent Dinosaurs. In the the Comics, it´s even explained that an Multiverse of Darkwing Duck exists and Negaduck, Darkwarrior Duck and his so called Ancestors are just Multiverse Versions of him. 2. Different Origins: While many Versions of Darkwing Duck are simliar, there are many different version of it´s origin. One is him becoming a hero by accident, one shows him as a skilled Martial arts master, one shows him as an Alien that by accident took the Identity before this Earths version Mallard could take it and in one he is an actor. 3. This is just the Rick&Morty Multiverse Theory but with Darkwing? No, no it isn´t.

This multiple origins stories is something you can find in Greek myths or Roman mythological origins of the city and it’s early history. It creates not only mystery, but also a bunch of tales that people can’t keep straight so canon is hard to find or is retold in various ways.

i watched the original show occasionally when i would get to go to my grandparent's after school and watch tv there. I never grasped the overall universe but i loved each episode i saw, it was definitely one of my favorite shows at the time (having been a fan of the original duck tales as a wee lad in 1991 i loved the connection too). I have only seen a few episodes of the new duck tales and while it was excellent i didnt go further, i didnt even know they brought darkwing back and into that universe, that's really cool. Interesting how many of those original series backstories had elements that got tied together in the DuckTales 2017 version of Darkwing. The film studio, the inspiration Drake found as a kid, even the fact that Megavolt was invoked in the filming and it was Starling who used the lightning rod against him. The story of Bulba, Waddlemeyer, and Gosalyn seems to have been done in a very similar way. I noticed a lot of the 2017 episodes of DuckTales have their origins in the original, like The Buddy System, for example.

Ok, I'll admit, I was pretty sceptical about the reboot of one of my favourite tv series of the 90s. I'd seen so many reboots that had lost their hearts to big business. I feared it would go the same way. But then, I watched it. And oh my god, I have never loved being proven wrong so much in my life. It not only kept its humour, it kept its heart and soul. And then the addition of Jim Cummings. Well. I got chills when he emitted the insane laugh of Negaduck.

As I understand it the canon goes: No extraterrestrial origin story, it's an alternate universe. Darkwing as a child WAS visited by Darkwing from the future and helped get the King jailed, but he has a habit of being very forgetful and so forgot it. And then the Megavolt thing was what really pushed him into being Darkwing Duck for real.
