A lot of people seem to be zeroing in on the (very small) shipping section of the video, so I'll clarify for all those who need it spelled out for them. That section is there largely to document a thing that happened. It was part of my experience with the show, and so to make a video about the show without talking about it felt incomplete. A lot of fans got told, in the last ten minutes of the show, that one of their main connections to the show was now completely invalid. Those people were obviously going to feel disconnected from the show after that. I feel that's worth mentioning as a thing that happened. The reason I bring up fan works is not as some sort of evidence of why the writers should have back tracked, but as evidence of why those fans would feel the way they did. Never in the video do I say that this experience was universal, that most people were shipping webby with the boys, or that there was any canon romance between them. I will repeat: I did not expect the writers to put any romance between the kids in the actual show. I say this in the video. I don't begrudge them for that, it is what I would prefer. That was never the tone the show was going for. These were fun little fandom shipping communities, and that's all they ever needed to be. Yes it was 100% fandom projecting. That's what a lot of shipping is in every fandom. I do NOT expect the writers to change the ending of their show to avoid personally disappointing me. But I do think it's fair to expect writers who were actively answering fan questions and interacting with fandom on the regular, to be passively conscious of that fandom while making the show. I don't think it should have been a deciding factor or even anywhere close to one, but perhaps a small weight on the scale leaning towards maybe don't do the twist. And with so many other things ALREADY leading the webby twist to be a bad idea, this is just another little one to add to the top of the pile. The cherry on top of the bad idea sundae, if you will. My MAIN point was that the webby twist, first and foremost, is a bad storytelling choice. I think they should have cut it for all the story reasons laid out in depth during the video- and as a bonus side benefit, they also wouldn't alienate a decent section of the fandom with the finale to their show. On a personal level, that loss of a ship is a lot harder to take when you go back to watch the finale with fresh eyes, and it's still a disappointing rushed mess with no build up and no follow through. Again, I felt it was worth mentioning, because it did happen, but it should not at all be seen as a central point in my argument.

Complaining about how a piece of media destroys your own personal headcanons, of which the show absolutely did not set up at all, is just kinda… dumb? Like I understand why you’re upset about it, but how you presented it in the video makes it seems like it’s this BIG deal, and that the show writers are bad people for “promoting incest”, even though you’re literally just imagining that because the show didn’t set up romantic relationships for the child characters at all. A plot twist messing up your own personal headcanons does not make the twist bad, and saying “it’s a cherry on top of a bad sundae” is completely untrue because it’s not a narrative issue in the show. It’s just your own personal opinion being invalid, which again, is wrong to complain about when it comes to the show’s narrative. And even barring that, you can’t expect show writers to always be mindful of their fans and never overstep on anything that might make them upset. Like, that’s a horrible way of telling stories in general. Again, I understand your frustration towards the plot twist, but you should have focused on how it’s your own emotional issue - not a narrative one. There is no reason to throw a bunch of accusations towards the writers “promoting the opportunity for incest”, with the only proof being your own personal headcanons
@ParachutingKitten6 ай бұрын
@@catdatwat9743 I'm sorry. When exactly did I say the writers were promoting incest? Or that they are bad people? Because um... they weren’t, aren't, and I would never say that. If anyone is taking that segment as anything other than a lighthearted (and yes, personally disappointed) chuckle at the insane situation our community ended up in, they are severely bad at reading my tone. For the record, I do think the webby twist is a narrative issue because (again) it has no build up, takes time away from already established storylines and characters, is incredibly rushed in execution, does not contribute to (and might even conflict a bit with) the central theme of the show, and ultimately feels like an out of place fan fic style twist. You can disagree with these sentiments, but they are the main reasons I dislike the webby twist.
@DarkMasterofCupcakes6 ай бұрын
What might actually make the twist worse is, according to the deluxe edition of the art book (which I have) - specially the "bonus" book that gives extra behind the scenes info about the show, the twist of Webby being Scrooge's clone/daughter (minor thing, but I wish they did clarify if Webby is just cloned from Scrooge or if they did something kinda similar to IVF to make her, since they never actually call Webby a clone like they do May and June - they call her Scrooge's daughter and descendant, and say she was made from him, but never flat out say she's a clone) was basically a back up? They apparently did hope for another season, and while they don't say what exactly they had planned for Webby, she was going to have her own arc, and the clone twist/finale we got was effectively a back up for if (and when) the show had to end before the crew wanted. Which probably helps to explain the lack of any real foreshadowing to the twist? Because if they got their fourth season, building up to the back-up twist would have been weird because it wouldn't let to anything, but because they didn't do the build-up just in case they did get renewed, the twist comes out of nowhere.

And I can sympathise with the ship based critique, 'cos... well, look not just at this show, but at Disney shows surrounding it. This isn't a new aspect to the culture, this is a wider thing about fandom culture: especially when a show has an ensemble cast. The only defence I can really give is that I don't personally feel the show ever felt intentionally shippy in any direction, but I could buy that I just don't recall some episodes or moments.

The unfortunate truth was that DuckTales was supposed to have a fourth Season. Season 3 was supposed to just focus on Huey and Season 4 would be the Webby season. BUT, unfortunately, Disney decided during Covid times that DuckTales would end with Season 3 (in the same meeting, apparently, where they initially decided that Owl House would end with Season 2) so the DuckTales people had to find ways to merge their already started Season 3 and 4 plans into one season, cutting out the endings of multiple side-plots (like Darkwing Duck vs Negaduck) so they could just focus on the more over-arching story.

I really loved this show, and had my own theories about Huey's supposed 'arc.' Throughout the third season, they lean heavily into him being the 'oldest' triplet and his feelings of inadequacy when his intelligence isn't enough to carry him in certain situations. This is made apparent in previous seasons too, like the 'Duke of making a mess' in season one or his moment in 'Nightmare on Killmotor Hill' where his dream is the weakest out of all of the siblings and he gets frustrated, yelling: "I'm not good at imagination stuff, okay?!" Not to mention, the Sword of Swanstantine episode was mainly about him facing the messy, impulsive side he's trained to tamp down in order to maintain his image as the calm, controlled eldest triplet. TL;DR, I think Huey's arc was supposed to be about him facing his perfectionist tendencies and his self-induced eldest child syndrome. I think they just needed more time to let it play out.

@@Beebop02It kinda does? It's the same reason people who liked the twist in Star Wars ep 8 that Rey has no legendary or even relevant parents, but she *makes* the choice and effort to be a hero anyway... Hated ep 9. Because there, that explicit, in-the-text message is retconned into "You're special because a previous named character is in your bloodline." Put another way, Webby in the reboot was able to dodge allegations of being a creator's pet with too much focus, explicitly because she earned her relevance in-show with solid characterization and a dedication to the McDuck family as a fangirl. Heck, she was even building her *own* trio of found-family sisters to mirror the Triplets, even while she'd already earned a slot as the next generational place of Della. Making her Scrooge's clone on top of that? It's actively diluting her own achievements in the story *while* pushing her relevance from "core part of the cast" to straight up "was the main character all along." Much like it wasn't a great choice when this card got played in Batman Beyond, this twist brings into question how much of Webby's smarts, toughness, and even bravery is her own effort, versus a genetic gift from her "father," especially when the latter was clearly at least intended by her *creators.* And then they gave her a second pair of sisters to boot! Making her unironically the most important character to the largest number of other recurring cast members, barring Scrooge himself! If the twist didn't hurt your rewatch value, cool. I would rather ignore it as canon altogether.

From what I’ve been able to gather, the twist of Webby being Scrooge’s daughter was planned from the very beginning. This was because the showrunner felt Webby was the least important character in the original show and wanted to do a cool twist with her. Even if they properly built up to the reveal I still think it would be a bad twist because like you said it doesn’t add anything. Doesn’t ruin the 2017 reboot for me of course (and I never shipped Webby with the triplets) but goes to show that even twists that make logical sense can be bad.

i could see teen titans coming back for season 6 and giving starfire a focus season, but the twist is that the season's set in space. they leave the tower and city to titans east and take off to deal with some galactic threat that incorporates the tamaranian civilization in some way. we get 13 episodes twixt the stars, each character gets some focus standalones, we get some goofy ones, but starfire gets a serious through arc involving several episodes throughout the season like robin in s1, terra in s2, cyborg in s3, raven in s4, and bb in s5. season 5 really felt like the proper end, incorporating everything it did; but setting s6 actually in space and potentially after a time skip could give it the edge. (plus it'd be chronologically after the movie, so robstar being a thing would be a new plot element.) it'd kind of have voltron:ld vibes but with the titans. lol sorry if this means nothing to you.

Yeah I think the “duke of making a mess” part of Huey’s arc was meant to imply that he inherited the infamous McDuck/Duck anger issues and was just really good at repressing them with logic and planning and list-making. I think it was meant to speak to how he copes with these anger/anxiety issues. It’s a fascinating concept, but it was not well executed at all! I’d give anything for a solid Huey and Donald B-plot where they bond over coping strategies and talk about how anger, if directed properly, isn’t necessarily bad. Also fantastic video! Thank you so much for summing up exactly why this show’s finale left me with such a bad aftertaste, which is tragic considering how damn good the rest of it is. Welp, if Danny Phantom has taught us anything it’s that fandoms will bend over backwards to ignore finales for the sake of their sanities.

I never watched the original Ducktales since I wasn't born 'til the 2000's, but I watched every episode of the reboot and loved it so much. I found each of the triplets to be so likeable in their own ways, and each one was so different from their brothers, but you can tell they still care for each other so much. The main reason I'm leaving this comment is to talk about Della's returning episode. Mainly, the triplets reactions to her return. We'll start with Dewey. He's the first one to really believe it's actually her and literally jumps into her arms without needing any kind of validation or prompting, showing that part of his personality which jumps into things without thinking. He's the most reckless? If that's the right word? Of the trio and his reaction to Della returning is one of the sweetest moments. Also the whole, Turbo thing is still one of the cutest scenes to this day. Huey as the 'nerdy' one of the trio needs a little more validation before he trusts that it's really Della. He questions her first and doesn't really fully believe it's her she replies to his questions and directly quotes the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook, giving him the validation he needs to believe that it's her and follow his brother's lead for a hug. Louie in my opinion is the most fascinating. He's the one who really doesn't believe it's her and Della has to literally come over to him since he believes its a trick or curse from Magica. This I think is a lot to do with his scheming side, which I think makes him question whether or not something is true, but he, unlike Huey, doesn't listen to the validation from Huey's questioning. He instead needs Della to physically come over to him, and even after that he's still sceptical. He wants to see her act like their mom. The whole way through the episode, I hate to say, but Louie is almost forced? Into accepting her. Take the scene where Della is aplogising to the kids for getting on the rocket and she asks for their forgiveness. Huey and Dewey both voluntarily put their hands in hers, but Louie doesn't. Dewey grabs his hand and forces him to. This is a very small detail but I think it shows that Louie is struggling to come to terms with having a mom for the first time and he's trying his best to be open to the idea. Anyway, I've gone on long enough. I hope this was interesting to someone. And if you read this, thanks, and I hope you have a wonderful day

"We had an ending in mind but weren't given time to build to it" is something that several animated shows of late have suffered with, leading to a final season that felt rushed. Steven Universe rushed its homeworld arc, Dreamworks' She-Ra rushed its space arc, Netflixs' Carmen Sandiego rushed the whole Carmen corruption arc, all found out they were getting canned early and had to rush to their finales, meaning that certain character redemption arcs were rushed or that several seasons' worth of story got crammed into one shorter-than-planned season. I think it's still better than ending on a cliffhanger like a lot of shows in the past have, such as the 1990s classic "ReBoot" (which ironically has never gotten rebooted) and various others, or shows that run so long that they lose track of their story and run themselves into the ground, but it is unfortunate to see. DuckTales isn't the only Disney show to suffer this fate either, such as with The Ghost and Molly McGee not getting its planned third season and having to wind up its story early, or The Owl House getting cut short not due to ratings but "controversy" (openly gay characters). Unfortunately this is the way it's been going for a while now and creative teams do their best with the restrictions they have.

I would have had Huey be the first to find out about FOWL earlier than LGD. I would have him solely be caught in a major conspiracy of FOWL and their involvement in the Woodchucks and Isabella Finch and the mysteries. His first major clue would have been seeing the robot mosquito in the opening episode. Then he would have caught the Launchpad's strange ramblings in a British accent in his sleep about 'conspiracy out to get them. I would have him go with Beakley and Webby and trade places with Louies in the harp episode. Then Huey tries to tell Beakley and Scrooge but they don't believe him- Scrooge because he believes FOWL is long gone and his ego- and Beakley is lying and doesn't want Huey to worry and get involved as she takes any suspicious details seriously and is investigating for more information before acting. Then we have Huey getting impatient (more of the Duke sides showing) and going into FOWL alone hoping to confirm his suspicions, only to get captured. Then from there, he has to escape without using the guidebook and learn to trust his self and channel his anger into strength like in the sword episode. Then from there he and the family find out about Bradford. That would have made the season feel more like Hueys in my rewrite.

I feel like we should have had this, or we could have had a Huey arc where he was captured by Fowl but Bradford actually manipulated him into helping them, and the rest of the agents pretended they were noble and just wanted to safely catalogue stuff. They would all validate Huey and his efforts and make him truly feel confident in his abilities, which would leave him on Fowl's side, and hed return to steal the journal from scrooge. Then I think he would end up having fights against his family, especially with his brothers (Fowl's resources and his genius would surely give him some kind of weapons/powers) with him being rational and mad at them for embarking on dangerous quests without realizing the consequences (similar to how he went off on Scrooge during Mt neverrest) or maybe black herin would find a way to make the duke of destruction a factor in huey's power? and with hueys help Fowl would end up getting all the missing mysteries, but he finds himself facing inner conflict, where he should feel happy for gathering together all the treasures to protect them, but feels like he wronged his family by helping their enemies. He then would have a some sort of identity crisis and possibly more arguments with his family, who still isnt able to convince him to leave fowl... thiugh they are unable to, so huey leave only to go back to Fowl hq and realize Bradford's plans to endanger his family. Huey would then realize the truth and realize Fowl only used him like a little pawn, which would lead him to unleash his Duke of destruction and fight off Bradford, only to lose. Fowl then succeeds in capturing the rest of his family, and it would beup to huey to save them... realizing his true self along the way. Idk... they definitely could have taken this route and manipulated Huey into helping them, because Bradford is a dark foil to huey in so many ways.... and the could have done so much with this if they made it huey season... but nevertheless... they did the best they could with what they had for the finale. (Despite a lot of unneeded focus on May and June for one episode!!! Like.., those two took away screen time from Webby, Lena, and Violet!!! The three girls were a trio that were a group with good chemistry that was lacking screentime to begin with, so taking it away from them in favor of two new one-off characters was a poor choice)

It is honestly very difficult to think how'd they write everything they planned into one single 3rd season. Huey, Webby, Daisy, June and May, the love plot, Boyd- that's just so much that'd need some sort cohesive tie-in that relates to the character development of both Webby and Huey. They would have needed to either cut most of it out or had to write it all well-interwined together.

Season 3 was supposed to be a Huey season, with a superhero theme, so that's why there were episodes like the Darkwing Duck special, Astro-Bot, and more and Season 4 was supposed to be a Webby season, which followed her and the entire FOWL storyline with May and June. i honestly really wish this happened, or the darkwing duck spin-off with DW and Launchpad.

The weak thing about season 3 is... Fowl feels incredibly weak. Magica was building up as a very cunning and terrifying threat, in the finale she ALONE conquered entire city and was so strong that only scrooge could defeat her because of his experience with her (and if you look at Lunaris board she was one of bigger threatsto his plans, statinghow powerfulshe is). Season two was building up to the Moon army, in one-two days they had entire planet captured and Lunaris was so intelligent he predicted every possible scenario that scrooge might have come up with. Amd Fowl? They appeared in some episodes being beaten up and in the finale they were defeated one by one by few characters each

It seemed like they were building up the Darkwing universe which is unfair because it was supposed to get its own show so it sacrificed too much of the original Ducktales characters and villains. Same thing with Donald. He's technically the original adventurer from the Carl Barks comics (with Scrooge being created four years later!) But at least in Season 1, he's stated to be cautious of adventure because of what happened to Della and by the Season 1 finale has accepted adventure. But then they un-do that to make him cautious of adventure again by Season 3 and with the same Don Cheadle voice he once used to rally them?! Huh??? They also give him one of the dumbest fighting styles (when again, in canon he doesn't fight like that). This show was so infuriatingly inconsistent with Donald, the times they chose to even use him...

I'm hoping it's just because they didn't have enough time to wrap things up after not getting a season 4.

All the finale had to do was give Huey his own character arc. In fact, Season 3 had 3 possibilities of making that happen. 1. Huey wanting to be a Senior Woodchuck. 2. Huey's friendship with B.O.Y.D. and his "robotic" behavior. 3. Huey's inner struggle with "The Duke of Making a Mess". That was a theory among some fans in the earlier days. There were also some fans who thought she _was_ Della after an accident with The Spear turned her back into a kid. Even after finding out what The Spear truly was, the show was still making multiple comparisons between the two characters. (Ex: "Coot", the Duck Cousin reunion in "Moonvasion") While there would still be issues like the whole...shipping disaster, severing the relations Webby/April, May & June originally had and completely glossing over the father reveal that people were ACTUALLY ANTICIPATING FROM THIS SHOW...I think I would have been more open to Webby being Della's clone. She'd still be an heir and related to the family...but I still wouldn't be able to get past the fact that the family already accepted her as an honorary member in both the reboot and the original. 😕 An adoptive heir could have worked... I've been thinking about how there could have been the _intention_ to clone Scrooge, but a mix-up causes Webby to be someone else's clone instead. Like Beakley's...or Pepper's, because why did they make them greet each other in "Fight" like that without giving her a deeper connection to Webby? 😭

Okay, so a few things. It's very fair to say season 3 is a hot mess and that it wants to be two separate seasons. One about Webby finally asking about her own past (she's at this point the last mystery of the McDuck family tree in her room), and one about Huey marshalling logic and reason with instinct and gut reaction (accepting his inner Donald Duck rage monster). It's also fair to say the finale is doing too much in a lot of the same ways season 3 of The Owl House is trying to do too much for its runtime. I object to characterizing Webby's reveal as not being in line with found family. For a few key points. First of which is that while Bradford is Isabella Finch's grandson, he's clearly not family as he has missed every important lesson she has about life. This is subtler than the other and easier to miss, but Ludwig's commentary is meant to show Bradford fails at being family. As well as everyone's shocked utterances to this information, since he's the most antithetical character to what we know of Finch. The more important one is that May and June couldn't collect the Papyrus of Binding. If family were just blood, just direct relation, the Papyrus should have appeared to May and June, who are just Webby. So the exceedingly literal pro-cheesy sentimentality Papyrus rejected the other two. But it didn't reject Webby, who cares more about the McDuck family legacy than basically anyone. Proof that somewhere between Webby's admiration of Scrooge, or Scrooge's care for the kids, that is a factor in the Papyrus's rules for how it reappeared. Equally, Bradford wasn't family to May and June, they turned on him because the closest thing they considered to family was Black Heron. Who Bradford killed in front of them. So their turning sides and accepting Webby's speech was pretty straightforward. The twins are also a good way to compare who Webby is now to who Webby was at the start of the series, which is another thematic part of the comparison. They are Webby without all the growth. And that's relevant to how Webby is handled in the ending, how Webby giving the family speech matters because S1E1 Webby could not give that speech. The other element is, much like the Season 1 Della mystery, Webby's set-up in the show creates a problem. A character with no parents, that's an open question. And the showrunners are pretty keen on looking for less linear answers to those sorts of questions. Hence Della being trapped on the moon for a decade. That's not the typical answer to a missing mom of protagonists, you usually just have them be dead and move on. (Another thing that would work better if we saw more Webby looking into her own parents and finding answers that didn't make sense. If there was a Season 4.) I'm not entirely sure what a fixed version of Seasons 3+4 would look like. Bradford is plot-integral to Webby's side of things, but more thematic to Huey. Maybe something where the Silego Circuit plot and obliterating the Missing Mysteries was meant for S3 and Huey, then S4 was meant to be Bradford deciding a more drastic answer was needed, and we came back to the Papyrus of Binding? (Also First Adventure being an episode in say Season 2 when the focus was more on Della and Donald as a separated pair would have probably also helped. But this is super nitpicky.)
@ThePaganSun3 ай бұрын
A BIG issue of mine is that whole "Found Family" thing came at the expense of actual canonical established families and thus the implication that they are less important. Webby meets Scrooge's parents TWICE while _Donald, who's their canonical grandson_ (and the show even incorrectly misidentifies him as their "great-nephew) never even gets to meet them once but is indirectly made fun of when Launchoad imitates him. That was low for the show. For the show to elevate some semi newbie at the expense of the Duck who actually inspired the Carl Barks comics and thus Ducktales into existence? And then tried to mesh April Duck and Webby when they're two completely different characters? It's just not good...

The finale didn't even do Bradford justice. It looked like he was going to be a sympathetic villain. One that makes a good point of adventuring being too dangerous under the Duck family. But nope, he thinks mass genocide is the answer with no redeeming qualities. Even the way he's taken out is pretty weak. Season 1 had 4 kids fighting an evil sorceress in the Money Bin, Season 2 had an epic space battle, Season 3 had the villain taken out by legal loopholes. Shouldn't the Papyrus have been destroyed when Black Heron wrote "Scrooge's sidekicks will perish?"

I really love(ed) Ducktales, but yes the finale did make things odd and a lot of it (Webby) wasn't really set up at all in a meaningful way. The third season really should have been about Huey. And yes I know the "Duke" thing didn't make a ton of sense in the grand scheme of things, but I saw it as Huey being a mini version of his uncle Donald who is also known to have anger issues (to the point where he goes to therapy for it). To that end I wish the reason had been a Huey and Donald focused. In s1 it was Scrooge and Dewy, s2 it was Louie and Della, so thanks season should have been Huey and his Uncle. For all purposes Donald raised his nephews and when Della came back she kind of just took over that role with Scrooge. Huey knows what it is like to get ignored within the family (no one understands his love the woodchucks and his need of order) and unless it's team thing, he isn't always included in the adventures in the same way as Louie and Dewy are. So I think it would make a lot of sense if Huey and his uncle/Dad really could bond and connect in a season long storyline. And I know the joke is no one can understand Donald and even Huey said as much in s1, but I think it would have been really nice if uncle and nephew had a scene on their own where Huey does understand Donald the best out of the triplets. And I agree with you the "heir" thing at the end would have worked better with Huey with the words and knowledge getting lost. It ust fits Huey way more than Webby. Getting back Webby, I agree with everything you said. I felt more emotion in the story Beckly told Webby about her parents and what was left unsaid about it than the "twist" reveal. In you wanted to go the Webby was connected to Scrooge daughter angle (I don't agree with it, but if you're going that route) don't bring clones into it. Have it be Goldie had a kid (Webby) didn't want her or FOWL (knowing it's Scrooge's kid) kidnapped the baby leading Goldie to think she's dead and doesn't want to burden Scrooge with that knowledge and Beckly finds her as she does in the show. It's not perfect, but we we can peace together Goldie and Scrooge had some physical relationship in the past so a kid wouldn't be that pit of the realm of possibility. Just something other than a CLONE, which doesn't make sense given the gender stuff. Ig you want to being the girl triplets in, fine, but do it as kind of a joke with Daisy introducing her three nieces to the boys. Anywa this was a great video and thank you for it :). You mentioned how science-fiction doesn't seem to be a good fit for the Disney Duck universe, but there have been some excellent sci-fi romps with our favorite ducks in the comics - my favorite among them being "The Universal Solvent" in which Gyro invents a liquid that destroys all matter (or rather compresses it into hyper-dense atomic dust) except for diamonds. It's got the kind of existential dread you need in a good science fiction story. The April, May and June reveal might've worked better in Europe where duck comics are still massively popular. They haven't had much relevance in the US since the 60's however. The most clever the show got with incorporating comics lore into the show was using Duke Baloni as Glomgold's alter-ego.
@historiaestmagistravitae.70516 ай бұрын
April, May, and June are Daisy's nieces, not Scrooge's daughters, and that they are heavily represented in European comics, especially Dutch ones. No, the problem is how they wanted to present those characters, since they couldn't before because The Legend of The Three Caballeros series already had them and really made them awesome. Daisy was already introduced in the third season and was only in three episodes, and May and June were introduced at the end, as Webby's sisters, since Webby April allegedly due to the Dutch mistranslation of the dubbing in OG Ducktales called her Lizzy which is April in Dutch. However, the problem is not that they are clones, but that they are presented as Scrooge's daughters, so that Scrooge somehow becomes a "father", which in my opinion is wrong and totally contradicts Scrooge's character in earlier cartoons and comics. I'll be honest though, May and June in Ducktales didn't turn out bad, and they should have been introduced earlier and there would have been more focus on them. They turned out well for me, but I still prefer April, May and June in Dutch comics.

This video essay is SO fascinating to me. Because I loved DuckTales when it came out. But my perception was so different! I always felt like Dewey was getting way more spotlight than the other kids, with Webby being a close second and then Huey and Louie being left in the dust. And for me, that through line was in all 3 seasons. Being a Louie enthusiast, I mourned that he almost never got to shine, he felt almost like a side character who got to lead in a handful of episodes and was otherwise ignored. I remember when the "all angles" conversation happened and being so excited that finally he'd get a more prominent role on par with the others. And then nothing changed. To me, at least. But way, way, funnier than that is that I had completely forgotten about May and June. I straight up forgot they or the heir plottwist existed. That's how poorly executed it was.
@DarkMasterofCupcakes6 ай бұрын
I honestly always found the twist about Webby being Scrooge's clone/daughter to be annoying from a mix of a lack of any sort of foreshadowing and the fact that in order to have Webby be able to find the Papyrus, they had to effectively retcon what Scrooge wrote? Because they establish in the episode introducing the Papyrus that it's usually very literal, to the point where Bradford was against using it because he considered the possibility that any wishes they made on it could be deadly if not worded perfectly. And in the episode introducing it, Scrooge says that only his heir can find it, but in the finale, they change it to "descendant". Because the two are not the same thing. Your heir is just someone who you choose to have inherit what you have after you die - both physical possessions and wealth, as well as titles in some cases. They don't have to be related to you at all. So with the original phrasing, it'd honestly be much more likely that Donald, Della, or any of the triplets would find the Papyrus, because Donald and Della are his immediate/explicit heirs, and HDL are likely also considered heirs of Scrooge via being Della and Donald's "heirs" by default (assuming Donald did legally adopt them during the time he raised them alone). And without it being established that Webby was declared/considered an heir, she'd actually be the least likely to be able to find it. So they had to change it to "descendant" to justify her being able to find it because she's Scrooge's daughter.
@idizzle22866 ай бұрын
I personally have always viewed it as Scrooge said his heir, so Bradford's very literal mind could only think of it as a literal descendant. But, like someone else in the comments pointed out, that's why it didn't work for May and June. They're descendants, but Scrooge doesn't know them. They're not his heirs. He originally did this to get Donald and Della out of danger, meaning he considered them to be his heirs. My interpretation is that literally any of the kids could have gotten it because Scrooge considered them his family and legacy (like how he was gonna have Webby take over for him in Rumble for Ragnarok).
@TitanLuzan6 ай бұрын
To be fair it WAS actually foreshadowed that Webby was related to Scrooge. For example the “From the Confidential Casefiles of Agent 22!” showcased the similarities between Webby and Young Scrooge, like both of them shouting out a battle cry before entering the cave. Also at the end of that same episode, in the same camera frame, Mrs. Beakly is smiling when Scrooge and Webby hug. Which I like to think is a subtle hint that she’s very glad that Webby and Scrooge were able to bond like a father and daughter. Another instance is when Webby starts acting like Scrooge in episode “The Forbidden Fountain of the Everglades” even tho she didn’t drink the water at all. I honestly really loved the twist imo and honestly wished there was more scenes showing that father/daughter dynamic between them.

Also, in the agent 22 flashback episode I mentioned, before the end credits roll the camera dramatically zooms in at the bouncing juice in Webbys pocket which only comes back up in one of the finale three episodes of season 3 when June drinks it while Webby and her are fighting.
@greglynas526 ай бұрын
This is because the show was supposed to have a season 4 that would focus on webby’s character. Meaning we would have most likely seen many references to her similarities with Scrooge, and seen her questioning where she came from. Though they did go into season 3 knowing there wouldn’t be another season, it would be very difficult to mix the season about Huey and webby together, meaning the season was largely undirected, had maybe 2 or 3 episodes about Huey, and the final arc of the season as webbies finale.

I honestly prefer it ending at season 3, it felt like everything was tied up rather nicely and adding a season 4 would just seem like them trying to stretch it out more than they needed to.

My thoughts about DuckTales... 1. They went completely overboard with the power of friendship being magic. Lena becoming sailor moon like that felt kind of cheap. 2. While the characterisation of the triplets was fantastic, the ones of Scrooge and Gyro in particular fell flat. We should always (until the series finale maybe) ask ourselves if Scrooge values his family or his money first. Hes not a good person and as a kid that was the whole reason I loved cheering for him. That trial episode in the last season was just a slap in the face for me. 3. The finale sucked. Making Webby a clone just defeats the whole "found family" thing she had going on. And "family is the greatest adventure of all" is just so unbelievably cheesy, I couldnt believe they were playing it straight as the way to defeat the final villain who would have had to know all these cheesy lines by working for decades for Scrooge.
@Soracayo5 ай бұрын
To add to your third point, I believe I once read a leaked pitch for the show where they explicitly stated that phrases like family being the greatest adventure would always be treated as gags (like in the pilot) so the show didn't come off as too cheesy about its message. Then they went ahead and did it.

@@ayanellezooman685 There's no doubt that the cancellation had an effect on the crew's decision making, but like...what was stopping them from keeping S3 Huey focused and saving all the Webby origins stuff for S4 in case that got greenlit later? Couldn't they modify the original S3 ending to make it fit better? Or did they not have enough time for that? The backup plan twist they came up with was destructive, random and completely unneeded. I can understand where the April, May and June connection comes from; they were the inspiration for Webby's character in the original series. But what deep Disney Duck lore does the "Scrooge's clone daughter" concept come from? Their clothes being similar?? Webby always wanted to be the fourth triplet and Scrooge accepted her as an honorary niece and that was fine. If they wanted to do something with Scrooge having a daughter, there's a whole storyline with Goldie's daughter and granddaughter from the European comics canon they could have pulled from. It's not confirmed whether Scrooge is the father here, but at least it makes sense and would have given him a greater incentive to rekindle with his love interest... Exploring Webby's family could have been a cool story arc for this show, but now, I wish they never bothered. 😔 If the reboot ever does come back in some important way, I hope they'll do something to revoke this and give us the father reveal most fans were actually anticipating. 🤷🏾♀️ In turn, I was hoping that there was the _intention_ of cloning Scrooge, but a mix-up makes her a clone of someone else. Like Beakley, so they can stay related. Or even better: weave Donna Duck, AMJ's mother and Daisy's sister, in here. Reveal this as Pepper's true identity. Tell us she was kidnapped and brainwashed into becoming an Egghead. Maybe even make her Beakley's niece as another way of keeping her related to Webby. And with Daisy having the potential to be Donald's wife, Webby can be integrated into The McDuck family in a more natural way. The lost niece / lost sister thing even matches a big element in the show! There were much better ways to do this...

The finale ruins so much of this show. The whole found family message? Gone, only blood matters. Hell they literally had to IGNORE their own plot to make it make sense. Scrooge wrote on the papyrus that only his heir would find it, NOT his blood relative. A better finale would be the Bradford made clones of all the kids. April, May, June, and Phooey, each one taking the trait of one of the kids and being better. April is smarter than Huey but lacks his common sense. May is tougher than Dewie but lacks his empathy. June is sharper than Louie but lacks his ambition. Phooey has Scrooge's spirit like Webby but the worst parts of it, the greed. And in the end HDLW find the Papyrus and the clones are allowed to live their own lives.
@jharmond38746 ай бұрын
to me the clones didnt take away from the message at all as May and June are also blood related but weren't considered family. Webby was family because she was taken in by Beakley (who was never blood related) and raised in the manor. There are also characters like Boyd, Lena, Violet, Fenton, Launchpad, Gos, Drake etc. that aren't related but can be considered family. However I do think its a little disappointing that Webby would be the heir when it should also include the triplets like you suggested. But it could have to do with the papyrus as Scrooge only specified 'heir' and not 'heirs'. as in one person. I also agree that clones taking the traits of the kids would have been great.

Family would do anything to keep you safe, and sacrifice everything to love you, no matter who or what you are. Like Scrooge. Like, my granny." @Footballfansblue6 ай бұрын
Good stuff! First, I just wanted to say I like how you changed outfits to match the characters for each season haha. You even have Webby's friendship bracelet. I love Ducktales(2017), it's my favorite show ever. The way each character's personality traits are always so prominent and how they circumvent tropes are really great. And the whole family is super cute and I love seeing all their interactions with each other. I like how you spent the time to talk about some of that and just how good the show was leading up to the finale. Della is personally my favorite but honestly all of the major characters are a ton of fun. I always had some problems with the finale, but I could never quite put my finger on why exactly that was. I liked plenty of things about it, especially Huey's arc. It was setting him up for something super interested but then it just got thrown away. I wish they could have had a fourth season because you're right, they really needed more time for him and for Webby. Webby's arc, oh boy, her learning to feel a part of the family is the first season is super sweet and I love seeing the bonds she makes between each of the different family members. So the finale changing the entire dynamic was just so off to me. The entire time the show builds up how she is part of the found family, and we see that with many other characters like Lena, and Gosalyn in the show too. It's one of the core messages of the show, you can say that Scrooge's interactions with almost everyone of the kids is really a found family idea. Making the big reveal at the end that Webby is Scrooge's daughter is just kinda baffling. It's clever, but like you said, I feel like the writers were trying to be too clever. It doesn't really make sense tonally. Throwing that in doesn't change her dynamic with the cast too much, but it does change her dynamic with Scrooge. Scrooge has shown that he cares deeply about Webby, but not any more than he cares about the rest of the kids. And if she's his daughter, I feel like he's supposed to have a bigger bond with her now than with them? And it doesn't really feel like a satisfying way to tie up his relationship with the kids at all. May and June are both kinda annoying, I agree. They just don't have much character or character development. Maybe they could've been interesting, but they just didn't have enough time. And it changes everything about the show like you said. They weren't a part of the characters we had grown to love and root for. It's such a weird decision to add to new characters who change the entire family dynamic in the series finale. I guess having Donald and Daisy adopt them kinda takes them away from the main cast, but like, that just means Donald is having to be thrown off to the side again and he was great in his appearances in the show. And Donald finally wanted some time to himself and with his girlfriend, why would he adopt two more kids? I don't doubt that he'd want them to be happy but it just seems awkward. He's been having to spend all his time raising three boys alone already so I feel like he would want a break, and that's even what he said he wanted, but then it gets ignored so that May and June aren't a loose end. Last Crash of the Sunchaser might just be my favorite episode of a show I have ever watched. It's legitimately that good. Everything there was built up to and it was sad and satisfying at the same time. The Moonvasion was also really nice. Like you said, it seemed much more like a series finale then the actual series finale did. It got all the characters involved and they defeated a big threat with not only their family but their ability to work together with some many others. And that's right in-line with the theming of the show. The Last Adventure, on the other hand, feels more like most of the cast was just tossed in there for cameos and it just didn't stick that well. It does have some scenes I love though. Donald telling Scrooge to not sign the contract even when he knows he's about to be killed because he believes in Scrooge to find a loophole is so good and it's a great message on how strained there relationship was but how much they care about each other. And Scrooge instantly signs it anyway because he could never let anything happen to Donald or any of his family. Also, the moment of Huey being found by Dewey and Louie using the junior woodchuck guidebook is pretty amazingly wholesome, lol. I love this show so much, I could talk about it for hours, but I think I've made my points here. I still highly recommend this to anyone, it's legitimately some of the best writing I have seen in a show(There are some flaws, but nothing is perfect), and the characters and family are so much fun together. Honestly, I've always kinda ignored the finale lol. Whenever I think about what happened after the show, I just don't think about May or June because they just didn't leave much of an impression.

Yeah, I feel like suddenly making Webby related is like revealing Gosalyn was actually related to Drake Mallard all along (lol ignoring that Darkwing content was barely in Ducktales, you know what I mean.) 98% of the time it won't leave a good impact on their relationship; it would take a lot more time and effort to make it palatable which they didn't have within a two-part finale so I agree they should've dropped that, given Huey his big moment, and let Webby remain full of so much potential that people keep making fan content of her. If they had a chance, maybe a spin-off for that. I realize they probably didn't have the option since it seems like Disney wasn't invested in any of their cartoons. (Edit: I realize they intended a fourth season but I mean, since they knew it wasn't renewed, maybe pitch this idea for a spin-off.) Introducing May and June also just... ruins what her grandma told her, makes Donald and Daisy's lives more complicated, and keeps them at a distance from Webby, Mrs. Beakley, and Scrooge. I think April should've been her own character and SHE ended up switching with Webby if they were going to try and pull that off, then she goes rogue and tries to free her sisters once she's felt what having a family is like. That keeps those three together and makes more sense, especially if Lena and Violet and the boys suspect something is off about Webby but the adults are distracted so they don't listen for a little bit, just long enough for them to realize the imposter needs their help and stop trying to tell on her so they can rescue Webby, May, and June (with Webby not just sitting idly by either ofc.) Webby could also still be adopted, I don't mind that, but I'm not a fan of making it so she was lied to this whole time. I think it'd be more interesting if they weren't clones, just really good dopplegangers because that happens in real life.
@cerberus015 ай бұрын
I don't know the fact that Beakley seemed to be training Webby for something from the get-go. Then you have Webby's obsession over Scrooge. The fact that Beakley was so easily willing to allow Webby to adventure with Scrooge. Not to mention when did Beakley have a chance to have any kids of her own with her being Shush's top agent and not having any relationships eluded to. To me it made more sense that Webby was in some ways more related to Scrooge than Beakley. Plus, the idea that it tarnished the message of "it's the family you choose" is sort of eh because, while a genetic copy, she is still an experiment by FOWL and not Scrooge's natural child.
@sainttan6 ай бұрын
I think the reason why May and Jun where the same as Webby was to emphasize the they are her clones. To also rob Webby of her own character, and questions herself who she really is if both her sisters are basically just like her. Or what if she never met the boys, Scrooge and Ms. Beakley. Its also a way to show us what it would have been like if Huey, Dewey, and Louie were in there old Duck Tales incarnation. Note: Them getting individuality happened first in Quack Pack. As well as having there own voice like Daisy and Scrooge. "In Quack Pack, the boys were given more distinct personalities, with Huey being something of a ladies' man, Dewey as a computer whiz and Louie as a comic book geek." ----- Wikia I feel like if the series continued, pretty sure the show will explore who May and June really are. Finding out that despite basically similar to their sister, they each have something that the others don't have, that makes them who they are. They never got to be individuals, because of the evil organization that raised them, which was the point, to use them as back up to get to Scrooge's loop hole. And them being easily accepted by the girls by the end, shows how much both Lena and Violet both grew as a character, mostly thanks to Webby and the boys. They both know each other having history with Lena De Spell; as well as Lena was initially distrustful of Violet's friendship with Webby; by the end reconciling and becoming true sisters. So the two of them can relate by being different, that they hurt Webby in some moments, as well as how they love Webby in there own ways. Out of all the kids, it makes perfect sense that those two would be there for them, they didn't alienate them for what they did, but instead accepted them as Webby's sisters and that they are not alone in this world. Some of the lessons I learned in the entire series was forgiveness, friends and family. The ending credits sums it up, but wish this was expanded upon.

Definitely think that the story they intended to tell was designed for four seasons, and they had to cram it all together. Scrooge has a line before the finale along the lines of "If F.O.W.L. thinks they can stop us from adventuring, we are just going to adventure even harder" then we get a couple filler episodes before the finale. I think Season 3 was supposed to deliver on the Huey Woodchuck plot with Bradford at the end being the Original Woodchuck (Bradford getting outclassed, and loosing his half of the Diary, but escaping, injured). Cliffhanger would be them discovering May and June. Season 4 would have been the Webby Season, giving the clone plot a lot more room to breathe, and focusing on the relationship between Webby and Beakly, and all of the cover up. Think the Finale would have played out in much the same way, but it would have felt much more like a proper ending to all of the stories, instead of a way to wrap everything up quickly. We went from "Were going to adventure even more!!" to "ok, shows over" in about 3 episodes, sadly another show becomes a victim of Disney shifting time slots to deliberately drive a shows numbers down. Let alone the Darkwing spin off that got tanked in the process, that could have sparked reboots of the entire classic Disney Afternoon lineup of the same quality. Disney dropped the ball on this one.

I do think it’s the weakest of the three regarding how they carry it out throughout the whole season. Dewey’s and Louie’s have a more natural progression, while Huey’s seems more like a string of episodes sharing some themes toward his arc. As for the series finale, I was satisfied with it and thought it was pretty good for the most part. The twist always did feel kinda off to me. I'm someone who wanted Webby to be found family for the Mcducks so I explain why I didn't see Webby and the boys in a romantic way (though I agree she should of been adopted and it being ealier would have helped everyone): 1. While Scrooge Mcducks calls every family Webby felt like it could be found family plot to me,Webby didn't really have anyone growing up,so Mcducks where escapism for her. For Webby to delevop this wholesome bond with them and to take her in would of been sweet (not to dismiss Ms.Beckley) Also Scrooge during the plane episode out of anger when Webby tries to say he was bad for how he handled Della says she isn't family and that hurt her, so I'm confused why people would ship her romantically at that point. 2. Webby's interactions read as a sibling more than love interest (I knew people would ship them btw I just prefer the idea of them being siblings) again because of point one I thought it makes sense that her being emotional with them could be them subverting expectations and Webby would be there sister instead though I'll admit I have a basis because I wanted that. Also the way she interacted with them seemed similar to how the brothers interact,the Louie and Webby episode is the best I can explain it,they have silly interactions,annoy each other but emotionally support and love each other,like the brothers do though you could read Webby's interactions at the time as romantic I guess? Dont mind me, just gonna go on a little rant here. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who thought that the ending was strange and kinda bad. It doesn't ruin the show for me, but it definitely took me a bit to adjust. If I had a choice in making the show, I would actually have Webby be this secondary focus throughout all the seasons. Because in the entire season up until 3, she's literally been the same. Nothing really changes except her friendship with Lena and Violet. I think it would've been more interesting seeing her trying to figure out HER past while helping Dewey find out about his Mom's past. Of course, it wouldn't be the main focus, but it would be shown that she definitely wants to figure it out. I feel like it would've been cool if she and Mrs. Beakly had a moment like Dewey and Scrooge had at the spear of selene episode. I'm not making it the exact same, but it is a parallel of the ending of the first season. It could've been slowburn, but it's development nonetheless. I would much rather have her arc be slow than have it be splashed in my face in the span of like 2 episodes (including some very minor hints). Another thing I wished they did at the finale was everyone getting together to fight. The finale was so Webby focused that it was kinda hard for me to understand that THIS was the finale. It honestly didn't feel like it, and it just felt like an episode that's just focused on Webby's past. I mean, I don't think the ending was that terrible, but it just felt very underwhelming. Because when the credits started to roll, I was both happy, but also asking myself if what I saw really just happened. Everything just felt so out of nowhere, and it's still a little bit of hard to comprehend to this day. But when it all comes down to it, at the very least, the writers did care A LOT about this reboot. And they definitely did not deserve to be canceled. I am glad that they did try their best, but they certainly could've been done a lot better.

Seeing her name in the credits took me out for a second and I had to double check that, despite the severe unlikelihood it was anyone else, that it was THE Emmy Cicierega who, along with her brother Neil, created one of the most well-known pieces of fan media for, I would argue, any fandom- the Potter Puppet Pals. I love how she just consistently creates things I love, and how she went from like, a teenager animating goofy little hand puppets to... one of the greatest reboots of all time?? Shoutout to her. I know that this may not be like... important or even valid because what I knew her best for is tied to a franchise we aren't suppose to say anything remotely nice about anymore, but I just remember feeling like, impressed at how far she's come from those flash animated puppets from lifetimes ago.

I think a main issue I have with Ducktales season 3 as a whole is that it just kind of feels like more Ducktales and that's it. That's not to say there aren't any good episodes in that season it's just that it feels like season 2 is more of a satisfying ending for the series overall and season 3 just doesn't really hook you as much because the Della Duck plotline was already wrapped up nicely in season 2. Of course they did have a plan for season 3 but I think they made the mistake of assuming they would just get a season 4 to help their new overarching plot which they did not get so it just leads to season 3 feeling disconnected from the rest of the series.

This is a great video that encapsulates a lot of the mixed thoughts I think most people have on the legacy of the show. I haven't disconnected as much and watch the first two seasons relatively regularly, but I rarely ever watch some of the later episodes in season three. Great job!

I can't believe they went with the dutch Donald duck comics explanation for della's missing status
@fangirl_ktee5 ай бұрын
She didn't have much else going on with her background. 😅 She dropped her kids off at Donald's and left. She held her brother's hand as a child and then we never see her again. It seems like the Dutch canon is the only source that gives something more significant to build off of.

i think its likely that a lot of the events of the finale were meant to be like...dispersed around a hypothetical 4th season. its annoying that they got cancelled too soon.

If I had a nickel for every great serialized children's TV show that got canceled after its third season so it crammed its entire fourth season into the last few episodes leading to a mixed reception, I'd have two nickels. It isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

As a very old now 90’s kid I love and appreciated all the references to Disney afternoon Shows. This show was great and show how Reboots can work when you have love for the source material. But yeah didn’t quite stick the landing. like many old Cartoon shows it fell to the same curse of Ending either unresolved or unsatisfying. Great Video Stella unriddling 👏💕 Edit: love your outfits inspired by the characters ❤️💚💙

Finale’s are very weird, because they’re the taste that’s left in the viewer’s mouth. If the finale is just as good as the rest of the show, then everyone will remember the show for being great. If the finale is better than the rest of the show, then the show will be remembered for being amazing and having an awesome send off. If a finale is significantly worse than the rest of the show, people are more likely to remember the botched ending than they are to remember the exciting journey. Even though 2/3 of this show is great, and most of season 3 is also pretty good, I still can’t help but look back at this show in disappointment just because of how much they messed up the finale. So basically, if you have to choose between a big but clumsy finale or a contained but still good finale, you should choose the smaller one, because it won’t poison the memory of the journey even if people wish it ended on a more exciting note.

They really fumbled it on Huey. He was my favorite and I related to him the most, so I had been really excited for the "Huey season" and to see his issues explored, but then he only got a few unrelated side episodes. It's so sad because there was so much potential there that they just...dropped.

I sat down to binge the entire show a few years back, but I apparently repressed the entire finale, I do not recall a single thing from it
