All these idiots on here saying you shouldn't have given your name 'after' you were arrested are taking rubbish. The whole point of an audit is to see if the police over step the mark and abuse their powers and to educate if possible. Once they've got you into custody the idea is to get out asap and start a complaint of wrongful arrest. By still not giving your name it only prolongs the time you stay in custody, especially if you happen to have your pet dog also locked up and frightened. Idiots passing judgment on you, you did a great job Matt. 👍🏼

This is not a waste of time if it demonstrates to the general public how the police abuse their position which is to serve and protect the public. Some may say that his look and demeanor was that of your archetypal terrorist. They may even be so extremely astute that when they smugly point out to someone (who they perceive to have a lower level of intelligence than themselves) 'has nobody noticed that the terrorist had a pet with him at all times, this was obviously an exploding dog!

mat12128 was treated with respect at least, he cooperated as much as he needed to, the sergeant got funny with him when he started pressing and quizzing the arresting officer about ID laws, mat was entitled to speak his mind on the matter and i think it touched a nerve with the sergeant as he probably didn't like his fellow colleague being shown up with some home truths. Mat showed a great level of calmness but he is a very chilled out sort of guy anyway, if i had been in that custody booking in room i would of given all those officers a really hard time of it, been as incompliant as possible, not answered any of their questions and refused to sign anything.

One of the 'necessities of arrest' that allows officers to affect an arrest, is to obtain details, so it is no surprise that the officer states this, and it is not an 'admission' of anything other than following section 24 of PACE. If you listen, he also states a second reason for the arrest. 'To allow the prompt and effective investigation of the offence or of the conduct of the person in question;'. These things are REQUIRED to affect an arrest (there are actually 10 'reasons' which officer can use to make an arrest without a warrant, once he has reasonable grounds for suspecting an offence). What is relevant here is whether the officer did have genuine reasonable grounds to suspect Matt of the offence. That is what would make the arrest unlawful. IMO, the officer did not have grounds for the arrest.

It's amazing, after watching the initial arrest, how things had suddenly changed once in the custody suite. It is quite clear from the original video that the arrest was made to 'obtain details' before any suspicion of an actual offence was articulated. Then, once in the custody suite, they suddenly had a offence under which the arrest was deemed necessary. A complete failure to adhere to the provisions in the Code G Code of Practice. The two elements required for a section 24 arrest were clearly not met at the time of the arrest.

@@simonsmith6394 but s58, ss3A para (b) item i) SPECIFICALLY allows for the defence of working as a journalist. So, the policeman admitting that he knew he was a journalist with a solid defence in law had no reasonable grounds to suspect a crime was being committed. Don’t you see how dumb you look when you make your comment without considering s58, 3A (b) i TA? He has a slam dunk defence. Furthermore, had the policeman known the law (which, we’re supposed to do) he shouldn’t have arrested him in the first place making the handcuffing assault and battery.

I always admired the Police but the more of this you see I feel very disappointed at the failings and total lack of basic common sense. The Sarg let you down badly. You expect with experience he would have stopped the detainment. They know fine well about auditors and instead of being polite and friendly and bridging the gap then let their ego's take over. Long term they are damaging people confidence in them but pretend they are protecting the public. It was a little scary when they had to look upon on a mobile phone what street their own Police station was based on.
