Darning Socks: Join the Yarn Lab Mend Along With Me

Hello there fibre friends! In this video I discuss my yarn long Mend Along project and invite you to join in with me. I also briefly show how I went about mending my first pair of socks. It's not really a tutorial (as I don't consider myself an expert yet), but you may find it helpful to see that you can just give it a try, because imperfect is still plenty good enough!

Inspiring idea! I have several pairs of hand knitted socks that need mending. When my daughter visited over the holidays, she brought me her pair of thick hand knitted slipper socks to mend. I was amazed to find scraps from the right skeins and the whole process was very satisfying. You look great and this was fun! Thanks, Sarah.

Thanks for the comment! I also recently mended a pair of my slipper socks, and I've got the one pair in my brown bags to mend for this year as well. I should probably knit a few more pairs, they are so cozy for around the house in winter!

Oh I wear most of what I knit. I have some shawls that don't get worn much, and a few sweaters that just plain don't fit. But everything else gets some hard wearing! Thanks for the comment!!

Sarah, what a wonderful idea. I cannot knit, but I believe I can use your instructions and mend my wool socks, which I have held onto. I am quite elderly and we still have snow on our side roads where I live in Tn. As soon as it clears some, I am on my way to finding me some pretty yarn. What fun it will be.I enjoy looking at ur videos so much.

Rebecca, I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. I'm also very glad you'll give sock mending a try, there are certainly lots of much better tutorials than I showed in this video. But I included my process just to demonstrate that you can dive right in and give it a try, and that imperfect is still absolutely good enough and wearable. Sarah, I just organized two of my ikea squares of sock yarn and I gathered all my Paton's Kroy left overs and make a pair using helical knitting and matched them.... I love the way they are turning out and my hubby said they're the nicest pair I knit!! I'll post a photo tonight to my Ravelry and call it Paton's Scrappy, I'm Netty062 on Ravelry as well. Also last year I mended at least 8 pairs of socks and continue to work at that pile.... I think I will join you on that MAL Mend-A-Long.

It is kind of an enjoyable process, plus it almost feels like I have a new pair of socks to wear, with only a fraction of the time it would take to knit a pair!

This is a good idea - I might try something similar with mending and other bits of crafting like sewing in ends or labels etc.

Oh sewing in ends, I always seem to have a project or two that need ends sewn in, just sitting there waiting for me. Maybe I should add that to my plans this month as well!

i like to just use the lid of a jar instead a darning mushroom. wrapping a scrap of yarn around the gathered sock underneath lets me use the sock itself as the handle... and i always have jar lids in any size i need.

Oooh a jar lid is a great idea as well! I suppose any flat surface of the right size would work just fine!
