I clicked so fast! 🤣 For context Delta was undergoing chemo at the time and wasn’t allowed to perform so Darren flew back to Australia and did this for her. She’s in the crowd crying listening to it. A huge moment in our musical history. 💜

Nick, you gotta realise that Darren did this as a personal favour to Delta when she was recovering from cancer treatment and was unable to perform at the ARIA awards. It was a herculean effort for him to get up for that performance. It wasn't even his song but he learned it for this event, and performed it in exactly the spirit she would have wanted to do it herself. I remember that night very well, and it had a gravity and solemnness you wouldn't believe. The whole room was under a spell. For that reason, I think this performance is even more powerful than any of Delta's performances of the same song - simply because of the circumstances of that night, Delta's health, and Darren himself, who had been suffering from crippling depression, hadn't been singing for ages, and managed to drag himself onto the stage and do this. It was a very big deal that this happened at all. Just thought you should know that this wasn't a simple night or performance.

Didn't know that Darren was battling depression at the time and some how found the strength to put in such a powerful performance. I remember this too and how emotional Delta was watching in the audience.

Didnt know that about Darren either. I salute Darren for that too. 👍

I watched the Arias that night too. I was blown away by his performance- just phenomenal. Always gives me goosebumps. Better version than Delta’s imo

In a recent interview with darren hayes he mentioned that he dragged himself out of a very depressive state to do this for delta...they seem to have a pretty solid friendship

Context here - in Australia, Delta was the country’s sweetheart who’s debut album, at 17, was a smash with 5-6 hit singles and tonnes of airplay. She was struck with cancer and was taking chemo at the time she was nominated for all the major ARIA awards. She was too weak to sing at the Arias, but attended (wearing wig because of chemo). Was a very scary time for her and her fans. Darren flew in from UK to perform this song as tribute to her, not as a cover, or to make it is own. Given the context of the song, the delivery was so emotional and magical. Everyone in the audience was in tears and it is one of the most memorable performance from Arias or any award ceremony for that matter. Delta was so touched she broke down in tears during the song.

Darren is so under rated...he voice can be absolutely magical, it transports you to another realm when he's on 🔥. I realise that magical is not a "musical term" lol but it's the only way I can describe it !

I think your comments show that Darren delivered exactly what he was supposed to. He wasn't trying to make the song his own and was only singing it because Delta physically couldn't. Delta won 7 awards that year so the fact he sang and all you could appreciate was Delta, without feeling like he didn't the song justice is perfect.

They did it as a duet a bit later as well. That is pure joy.

Funnily enough, he's already reacted to that duet you mention. He must've forgotten.

How is that not the same version I've seen? I remember them showing Delta in the audience in tears. Apparently Darren learnt the words on his flight back to Australia just for this performance.

I've seen an slightly extended version of this clip and they flash to Delta during the applause at the end. This video ends just before that.

Darren meant every word he sang that night- as many people said - Delta couldn't perform this award night as she was having chemo still..... she was a blubbering mess in the audience.... and I'm sure that at that stage nobody knew how she was going to come out of the other side of her treatment......We loved Darren before hand....but I for one loved him even more after this ..... good friends and he apparently didn't get a rehearsal as he flew in that day after 24hrs in the air from London..... top bloke !

Darren did a great vocal and stayed true to the original. He wasn't trying to make it his own and did this as a tribute to Delta who was unable to perform due to her health issues at the time. I remember watching this and Delta, who was in the audience, was emotionally moved by this performance. They didn’t show that part in this video.

Darren is an amazing vocalist and songwriter, he is also one of Deltas best mates thats why he stood in for her whilst she was having her treatment as she wasnt healthy enough to do this performance.

I remember watching this and when the cameras went to Delta watching him perform it was absolutely beautiful moment. Every eye was glued and dead quiet to Darren performing this it touched everyone so much. And you could see his eyes locked and singing it directly to Delta. You could see how unwell Delta was aswell. 😢❤
@Teagirl0092 жыл бұрын
As others have said he sang this for Delta at the Arias because she wasnt well enough to perform it herself. Delta actually asked him to as she was fan of his. I honestly love Darren's version even more than Deltas. Not just vocally but the emotion and connection to the song and lyrics. I just felt it more. Delta didn't have the same emotional maturity imo to connect to the song when it first came out. She was only 18. He was a lot older. Of course now it's different. There's also a great version of them performing it together about a year or so after this. Which I think you already reacted to. This video didn't show it but the camera panned to Delta and she was crying afterwards . She loved it.

One of the great performances. I've heard it 50x and it's still stirring all these yrs later. Gotta remember that in 2003 Delta was just hitting her strides, but these days she's a certified legend, so it can seem like one is biting off more than they can chew.

He did this for Delta as at the time as others have told you Delta’s was dealing with her cancer treatment and wasn’t allowed to perform, she was in the audience watching, she clean up that night with winning a lot of awards. she a huge fan of Savage Garden. Darren had everyone captivated singing this and had Delta in tears and most of us at home watching it. Was a amazing moment in Australia’s music industry.. 🧐🇦🇺😊

The first version you hear of a song, influences your opinion of the best version. Darren's ARIA performance is the first time I heard "Lost Without You", and I consider it the best. The second version I heard was the amazing Darren Hayes and Delta Goodrem duet version. After those two, Delta's was OK, but it seemed to be lacking in emotion.
