I've just found out about this part of my family history. Ernie Abbott was my great uncle. I was never told about him and tris tragedy!

There's not many songs that can genuinely make me break down and cry. You've got one with this song.

This avoidable tragedy was stoked by inflammatory language from the right wing. We can only hope we don't have more of this horrible shit like this with what's happening again right now.

What a song most of us outside NZ never heard of him before but thanks to you the story of this man is alive today.

Wow, this is heaps powerful all around: lyrics, voice, playing, and an entirely appropriate clip to match. Great casting, acting, and editing, for sure. This is excellent, and, added to that, the huge weight of each beat is quite right for the depth of the challenge which the lyrics and clip present.

I couldn't agree more... been a blues player for 40 years but never much into acoustic stuff. BUT this song and its presentation is very powerful & evocative - it is also sung with great delivery and conviction. Thank you for making this clip / vid available. I love it. All the best for the future to Darren Watson.

Thanks Steve. Recorded essentially live in my lounge - just the organ during the solo, the backing vocals at the end. and a little extra percussion added later. So the performance is real.

Great slide playing, love the story telling and video. Your song made me do some research on the 1984 anti-union terrorist attack on Wellington’s Trades Hall in New Zealand, where Ernie Abbott the caretaker was murdered👍🎸🇨🇦
