I have known Pete for quite some time, i was honored and thankful that he mentored me on my UGA International program. Pete has always been kind as well as open and honest about his past. He is a great man filled with a world of information and many fantastic stories. This is a true man of the world who deserves a world of respect. Pete has done so much in life to include his body building titles, owning Gold’s Gym for 20 years and turning it in to a world wide conglomerate, drag racing funny cars / dragsters, as well as being the first Sponsor of the 1st three UFC events. Pete trained in Jiu-Jitsu with the original founders of the UFC and now takes his children to train in MMA at the Universal Grappling Academy. Now in his early 70’s Pete still works out 3 - 5 days per week and enjoys raising his 2 wonderful children in Southern California. Thanks Nick for your videos that keep the legends alive.

I've been training since 71 and I remember the Grym, definitely one of the mass monsters similar to Casey Viator. He did a skit on the Red Foxx show where he and Foxx did a pose off. It was entertaining, but the Grym wowed the audience with his size and muscularity.

For those who don't know the names of the guys in the photo at 2:23 I will do my best. Back row left to right: Don't recognize the first or second, next is Jusup Wilkoz, Steve Davis, Bill Grant, Ken Waller. Next row down right to left we have Mike Mentzer, Tom Platz, Kent Kune [last name not spelled correctly but that is how it is pronounced], not recognizing the next guy, looks to be Samir Bannout in black jacket, don't know the next two. Bottom row left to right , first guy don't know, then there is Pete Grymkowski, Danny Padilla, Ed Corney, and last might be Larry Jackson... maybe. Photo at 3:46 right to left is Pete Grymkowski, Danny Padilla, Robbie Robinson, Roy Callander, Mohammid Mackaway, Boyer Coe, and possibly Larry Jackson.....maybe. All worthy of videos.

Nick, I remember him from some of my old bodybuilding books, not the mags; and it went along with "owner of Gold's Gym" ...Thanks for the vid. It's funny, I don't remember those shots in the mags and those photos, most may be the first time for me I started in around '80. You look back down the line at Boyer Coe, who I always thought was a good bodybuilder and it's like Pete's size is 10 years ahead of it's time. I just have to add for the comment below, don't do drugs. It's now a "thing" in your life you have to deal with in some way. Will you stop at one cycle? You will be so much happier in the latter portion of life, as you "improve" into your 60's, when you lift smart, eat smart and stay natural. -CD

Do they still have other major title competitions like Mr. America, Mr. USA, Mr. Universe, Mr. World, Mr. Galaxy, and even those by state names, like yours truly's state, Mr. Texas? If not on any of these, they should resurrect them, as I agree with Pete, that these should be revised as not all can compete at Mr. Olympia, especially where it seems to be a broken record of the same outcome, year after year, there. At least this gives a chance for others to shine without so much limitations, even if the $$$ amount doesn't match up. Thank's Nick, for sharing, brother.

I was a freshman in college just beginning to weight lift, I wanted to go to Golds Gym, where it all began. I was on a flight and I sat next to Pete, I did not know who he was, but he was massive, cut off sleeves, muscular and cut. He had long pant legs but his quads as he sat were thick, I compared my knees to his, and I looked like a child sitting next to a beast. Being naïve I asked him how he was able to get so muscular and he explained to me that his diet with protein shakes allowed him to obtain his size. I of course believed him, why not he was sincere and was kind enough to carry on a conversation with me, and I had only just heard of steroids the year before in time magazine. The flight landed and he paid for the taxi ride and took me to Golds Gym and made sure I was welcomed not allowing me to pay for my workouts. I never saw him again and found out later who he was.

He was runner-up to Casey Viator at the 1971 Mr. America, the contest at which Viator became the youngest ever winner thereof and routed the competition by taking not only the title but also every best bodypart category except best abdominals! Also, and I am not trying to criticize or disparage Pete Grymkowski, but his post steroid physique was totally unrecognizable from his competitive one. I remember re-reading the caption on the photo (circa 1980) because I simply could not believe it was the same guy. He was wearing tennis clothes, and I was thinking that he might be a pro tennis player with co-incidentally the same name. Ultimately, his accomplishments in bodybuilding deserve our respect (as does his honesty) but I can't understand how he (or anyone else) can endure the emaciating post steroid metamorphosis.

One strange thing though is that he always looked his best when he was standing relaxed compared to when he posed. I wish there were more photos of him taken and published back then. Nick, you got this one right on the money. I can't figure out how he never won the Olympia.

From what I remember, Pete bought the original Gold's Gym from Joe Gold. Part of the deal was that Joe Gold couldn't use his name in connection with a gym any longer. Pete went on to franchise the Gold's Gym to almost everywhere. Joe Gold later decided he didn't like being out of the Gym business and created "World Gym". I also remember that one of his contests that he placed second in, he was rather smooth. Ray Mentzer came in third and was quoted as saying, "Do I have to come in here as fat as Grymkowski to win one of these?" Ahhh... The politics of bodybuilding. The best physique didn't wasn't always the winner.
