I'd argue that doing it for your family IS selfish. It was his attachment that was the problem - he could never let go! His attachment is a selfish thing. He and Padme clung to each other during the war for mutual support, using each other. He was witnessing losing Luke just like he lost Padme and stepped in to stop it. Right through his entire life, he couldn't let go of his attachments.

I was impressed with the choreography and reimagining- but I think that remake duel does NOT fit the film at all. The original film is a fun space adventure before the intense lore kicked in - the tone would be all over the place. The fact is that the Jedi failed Anakin. I've thought about it every which way and while he made the choices he made and wore them, he was failed by a shortsighted and entrenched Jedi council that was more afraid of losing its legitimacy in the republic than doing the right thing. This is why church and state are separated. The Jedi were never meant to be warriors as Anakin said. They're keepers of the peace and the Clone Wars forcing the Jedi into the role of Commanders and Generals was ultimately what cost the Jedi and the republic its soul. Ultimately the very thing that Anakin gave all of his youth and really his whole life to protect, turned against and feared him. They were happy for him to be a useful tool, but feared what he represented within the Jedi as a paradigm shift. I'm deeply sad for the tragedy of Darth Vader. Even now it sits badly with me.

"Have you ever heard the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, The Chosen One?"
I love how while most good guys who turn villain do it because of jealousy or vengeance or wanting more power etc, Anakin's fall was the simple yet in him extremely powerful fear of losing the ones he loved and the desperation to do anything he could to prevent that. The difference in his mentality versus others is also expertly shown as he always tries to tempt his loved ones to join him as he genuinely yearns to be with them always, such as asking Padmé to join him or proposing to Luke the idea of ruling the galaxy together as father and son. Sidious never had such emotional foundations for his darkness; he was just a megalomaniac, albeit a supremely terrifying one.

As cool and memeable Sidious is, this alone makes you show that he is the most evil movie villain in history. He used a boy who alway had a terrible live as a puppet, asides all of his Empires multible genocides, this alone makes his death in the return of the Jedi (the true ending of Star Wars) one of the most, if not the most satisfying death in cinema history. I just wished they made it more personal by having Anakin stab him with his lightsaber.
