Me too... It really did take on a new significance that I don't think anyone including George Lucas would have predicted. But it's true. He really did become afraid. Afraid of the dark side, just like Master Yoda and Mace Windu before him, and in doing so, helped strengthen the dark side. Though in a much more direct way. I truly do love his story aec. It was was really amazing. And his acting in the Last Jedi is FAR above anything he ever did as Luke before. Such a nuanced performance. Truly masterful.
@Luis-vy9bm5 жыл бұрын
Now I understand, Fear really fuels the darkside.
@spencer83885 жыл бұрын
The only thing is that he was afraid of Vader, of palpatine and of the empire, he was afraid of losing his friends and then afraid of Vader’s threat to turn Leia. He has faced the darkest of fears when he began to strike down Vader in anger and cut off his hand. And saw his own future if he didn’t stop himself then. And then he boldly fearlessly turned around and threw away his lightsaber in the face of the emperor.he already conquered these things. Not to say he would never have fears again but even in Kylo, he wasn’t as strong as Vader or palpatine or at least not at the time he was going to kill him. So that would’ve been a rehash of his fears for himself or facing Vader yet he helped save anakin and stopped himself from going to the dark. To make a re-arch of this was not right. Or better yet explain why and how. Besides a “possibility”, he had no reason to turn on his family. In empire he already acted brashly to go save Han and Leia and he suffered the consequences of trying to run too quickly headlong into something like that. Again he already learned this lesson. And for Yoda to say he didn’t listen made no sense because he did. He began a new Jedi academy. He began a new generation of Jedi. He strongly declared “I am a Jedi , like my father before me.” Episode 6 was the RETURN of the Jedi. I agree his acting and doing his best was amazing. And yes the Jedi before became arrogant after 1000 years. But again he would’ve gathered and learned this lesson from obi- wan and Yoda. In what is now considered legends eu, when his nephew jacen became Darth Caedus, he didn’t want to kill him or become fearful again and then shut down. He helped eventually turn him back even though jacen would be forever scarred, it was his choice,. Kylo/ Ben also had a choice. It wasn’t Luke’s fault. Again Something similar was explored in the books, when Kyp Durron came under the powerful dark side influence from a holocron of the ancient with lord Exar Kun. He then took the sun crusher and destroyed solar systems and killed tons of people and yet he was still redeemed with help from Luke. I don’t get last Jedi at all. And as sentimental as this tries to make it and as much as this tries to help make it better by making some sort of sense of it, it doesn’t make sense. At least to me.

Yoda may or may not have been going off premonition, but it was true either way. The Force and conflict between the dark and light side has led to scary consequences from all who were involved, from killing children, your best friend, or your student. The Force is terrifying in a way simply because of how quickly it can ruin lives, despite its potential for good. Luke is right when he says the Force never belonged to the Jedi, they simply learned the most about it and in a way, feared it more than anyone else.

@rickblaine96705 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that’s also what the saga was teaching before the Sequels even existed. Luke refused to kill his father as everyone wanted, and he tried to help him instead. There’s a reason he says “like my father before me” when he proclaims himself a Jedi. He’s proudly accepting both his father’s greatness and his failure, recognizing the importance of it in order to learn how NOT to fail. So TLJ’s message of learning from the past is good and all, but it was already a core part of the saga (if not THE core part) a long time ago.

Oh my god I just realized a beautiful irony: Luke's looking to the horizon, saved Vader. Luke refused to accept the present of Vader being a machine only capable of evil and kept looking ahead where he turned him back into Anakin. The irony is that Luke's looking ahead with Ben is what turned him into Ren. Luke's looking ahead and only seeing how he could further fail and screw things up more is what stopped him from going back out there. That was Luke's failure. Always looking to the horizon and never being here and now. When Luke realized this, he found the best way to help the future was by saving the present. So he did. He saved Leia, whom he knew would be the one to save Ben.

Even Mark Hamill was unhappy about how Luke turned in "The Last Jedi", because Luke's main characteristic is that he doesn't give up, he never loses faith, that's why he saved Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi, and that's why he wouldn't have quit after one failure, or would have need years to learn from that mistake. I know where they were going, or more like where they wanted to go. The problem is, they forced the characters to be there, instead of letting the characters write the story. If they wanted Luke out of the scene so Kylo Ren could turn into what he became, it would had been better if he had been searching for a way to save him, instead of having Old Luke just giving up and needing Rey to remind him of who he really is (and she didn't even manage that, Yoda was the one who did it). It certainly would have pissed less fans, and actors, about how Luke was for most of that movie.

I think a lot of people miss in TLJ that Luke’s final point is understanding his failures don’t negate the good of the Jedi or himself in the past, and that he should pass on the Jedi Order and not let it die.

Failure is this movie's theme. Poe's failure, Luke's failure, even Kylo's failure to an extent is present in this film. It gives a depth that’s missing in the movie. It, to me, brings into focus the choice Rian made. But the rest of us, you know who LOVE the Star Wars stories can take a quick look and see the horrible inconsistencies, the lack of character depth, and overall breaking of original canon lore. If the only reason you have for liking this movie is a three minute Luke/Yoda scene that means you only love it for a pure nostalgia high. I mean wouldn’t call you an idiot but definitely not a die hard Star Wars fan because by looking at almost every plot point in this new stage, one can see how horrible flawed it is. But if you can be entertained by it, good for you! I wish I could be. But I cannot forget how Disney betrayed George Lucas by tricking him into buying his ST treatments and then saying they never planned to use them. George NEVER would have written a movie like the last Jedi. Disney may have taken the bare minimum from his treatments regarding Luke and his island, but it would NEVER have been as badly written as this.

“And for the briefest moment of pure instinct, I thought I could stop it.”.. the way Mark delivers that line, it always wells me up inside. Luke was a different person when we saw him in The Last Jedi, affected by a returning darkness he once thought was gone.. losing his apprentices to his own nephew and watching everything he swore to protect crumble right in front of him, failing Han and Leia.. believing in his own legend. The Luke we saw experienced failure, just like Kenobi and Yoda did. The Last Jedi may have had its problems but it showed us fans a different side to Luke, life isn’t all happiness and rainbows.
@yolobewackins97154 жыл бұрын
Well put. I always thought TLJ showed Luke as he would be, a human. Humans aren’t perfect and they make mistakes. People think it’s weird he tried to save Vader but quit on Kylo, but it’s easy to believe in your dad when you didn’t firsthand witness his atrocities like Obi-Wan. He actually saw the evil things Kylo did and changed his opinion on him like it would any real person. After all Luke in TLJ and Obi wan In a new hope are on pretty similar arcs and nobody was mad at Obi wan for hiding after being a great Jedi.
@jacobclark_1374 жыл бұрын
Luke still suffered a lot on the OT though. Who said the Original Trilogy was about happiness and rainbows? Luke finds and his aunt and uncle charred to a crisp in his own house and has to go on a journey he doesn’t want to go on. Then he watches Obi wan die right in front of him and that’s just on the first movie... how is any of that happy happy rainbows? What the original trilogy taught me that the sequels fail to is that even though there maybe very difficult times and sometimes things aren’t the way you once thought they were, you don’t have walk around hanging your head about it all the time and hide away and live like a hermit loathing yourself for the rest of your life. Put you faith in the good that still exists in people and never give up on that. You never know when someone might have a turn of heart. Fight for the light and thirst for the righteous day that darkness will be vanquished forever and hold onto the good friends that fight with you through it all, because everyone could just hid in a cave and mope around for the rest of their life... but no, there’s a fine fight that must be fought, so never give up on the good in people, whoever it is.

@@jacobclark_137 I agree, but I'd say its unrealistic for anybody to hold onto that hope their entire life. There will always come a time where someone feels hopeless and Luke did that realizing his fear had become a reality and it was to a degree his fault. No ones perfect and its impossible to live your entire life to your best ability and I think that the movie made it clear that Luke wasn't the perfect Jedi that we all saw him as. (Also Side tangent.) Luke basically felt nothing about his aunt and uncle dying. I always thought it was weird how they were never mentioned again and had no real emotional effect on Luke other then being a reason to leave and sort of an excuse on the story writers part as now they don't have to have Luke's guardians getting in the way of him leaving.

You have to give Ryan Johnson that. The last thing Luke looked at, was the horizon, trolling Yoda.
@CritStanley3 жыл бұрын
Maybe Trolling. :P (That is hilarious btw XD) But then, even if always looking ahead was a flaw, it was also a strength. Being in the here and now at the time of ep6, would have led Luke in agreeing with Obiwan and killing Vader. Luke's insistence to looking ahead is what saved Vader. Ironically, Luke looking ahead was how he lost Ben. At the end of ep 8 Luke finally found the best middle ground and saved Leia whom would save Ben in the future. Luke died in the present, looking to the horizon. ^_^

kevin rodriguez First of all, thank you. Sorry I took so long to respond.Now to your question: Look, this might not please you, and might not be the answer you’re hoping for. I really did like TLJ. Quite a lot actually. Up to a point on where I’d put as my 4th of the saga (behind the OT). But it’s a really flawed movie, one would have to be blind not to see it’s flaws. I don’t like every single part of it either. But the part that matters to me I think it was very well done. Luke, Rey and Kylo. That’s it. Here’s the movie for me, and honestly their arcs only were enough for me to enjoy the thing. I did like some Poe as well, but not all of it. And than there’s the Finn-Rose liberation thing which I hated honestly. But I love what this movie did for Rey and Kylo. It really gave them character. The way their relationship got constructed, it’s tense, it’s uncertain. Really dig it. Luke has always been my favorite character ever, in anything really. And I loved how he was treated in this movie. Thought it made him human, relatable. Didn’t find it uncharacteristic at all. And the way he saves everyone in the end still gives me chills. So yeah. TLJ definitely not a great movie. One could argue it’s at least good. But I really liked it.
