I’m sure the writers tried making Frey a reluctant protagonist. But she’s not. She’s more of an annoyed protagonist. From how she acts in the story to all her mid-gameplay conversations with Cuff, she doesn’t let the player forget she HATES everything she’s doing. She gets less motivated to fight the Tantas as the game goes on to the point the last one needs to drag her into a trap to keep the story going. In the ending, it doesn’t feel like there’s any character growth. She just thinks she has from the rush of power in becoming the inheritor of all the Tantas. And even after saying that, I really want to see a sequel. I need to know what the developers wanted to follow up this dumpster fire with. There’s a lot of story potential like her contracting Tanta-madness since she bound Cuff to her arm and she starts confronting the darker aspects of herself. Or she deals with the kingdom that made cuff while learning about her dad.

I'm not sure why someone would want to see a sequel to such a dumpster fire as Forspoken. The game is uninspired, the dialogue is absolute cringe and the story is godawful, why would we need a continuation of something that's been proven to be terrible on so many levels? It honestly sounds like these people are having a buyer's remorse effect after realizing they've dropped $60 on a yet another terrible AAA release. I don't even see any potential in any of it's gameplay, combat and world design. Forspoken can be summarized as a third person shooter with magical pellets instead of guns and bullets with a large, barren and pointless world to run around from point A to point B in and shallow game-play mechanics which all in the end when combined result in an awful mess that actively makes you want to stop playing it and go play actual good games instead. Whatever redeemable qualities this game might have had were already realized years and years ago from far better games, so there's no point in trying to push a block figure into a circle hole when that clearly doesn't work out well at all.

Forspoken will be forgotten by the time the next year comes around, similar to how everyone has already forgotten about the train wreck that was the awful Saints Row reboot, and a few years before that Balan Wonderworld. 32:47 Sin #119 I actually like the idea that, in a fantasy world, using magic has drawbacks. Olas draining herself to death to maintain a fantasy world is interesting, and they could have dealt with that more -- foreshadowing, perhaps. But the main character seems to be able to use magic just as strong, just as often, _without training_, and never even gets a headache. So either the rules are inconsistent (sin) or she's just so instincitively good it feeds into the Mary Sue savior worship (sin). Maybe the fact that glimmers of a good story poking out, only to be painted over with boring tropes and bad writing, is worse than if there'd never been any hope of redemption at all.
@chrisdaughen5257 Жыл бұрын
I think the devs ran out of time to make an Olas fight and had her die to avoid it. It really sucks because the ads gave the impression Frey was going to fight all the Tantas and the story only has the player fight half of them (the dragon doesn't count). It's like if a Final Fantasy game decided to go into the endgame after you get the fire and water crystals. The expected experience is literally cut in half.

I don’t know what the writers wanted players to like about her. Like Chloe, her defining characteristic is that she’s headstrong. But for that trait to work, the setting needs to be overwhelmingly antagonistic and morally ambiguous to justify it. I would've added two additional sins at the ending. One, during the "premature ending" sequence, Frey could've gone back to New York for Homer, but simply chose not to, which is very odd considering how hard the game tries to convey how he's the only one in her life. Two, Frey's "letter" to Homer falls flat from the get go when you realize that he *is* alone; sure, it seems he's in the judge's care now, but Frey outright dropped him off at her doorstep, chose not to come back for him and even now is actively choosing not to do anything to bring him with her. That's two potentially emotional messages that fall flat even before they start.

When his stupidness was met with a surge of intelligence by being put in as the main computer, it contradicted everything he was initially programmed into being and completely made him go batshit with both literal and figurative corruption. When he was forced out, he went back to his original programming the ‘task’ that he set for himself, which was why he wanted to apologize at the end for going crazy. Portal did amazing with making these robotic aspects seem so natural to the point where seeing the patterns is like finding an easter egg and not just having the robots be your typical ‘beep boop protocol protocol all your base now belong to us’. Y’know what this game’s story kind of reminds me of? The John Carter movie. With several differences of course, but it’s still the same story of ‘MC gets launched into another world after touching magic object and is at first arrested and/or belittled by everyone until they use their fancy powers nobody else has to fix everything and become the savior-leader of a world they barely know’. Except Frey is infinitely more aggravating to listen to than anyone else in that movie

@@Jeezes718 "ruined is a major overstatement." Not even close. "Hack and slash games existed before dmc, calling every game that uses that model a rip off is a bit much." I never did anything of the sort. I never said that about Darksiders, I never said that about Nioh, or many, many other games that fit within that genre. "As much as I love turn-based rpg's they are far too restrictive with what they want to put into ff games nowadays." 'What they want to put into ff games' has already been ruining Final Fantasy. You don't jettison core concepts of your flagship IP, completely rewrite the mechanics of your game, and expect to keep your core audience. "And this is by far not the first game square has made that uses that sort of gameplay and they have been doing fine." They did fine for a few games from a spin-off series. Kingdom Hearts was great, but Kingdom Hearts isn't Final Fantasy, and more importantly, _Final Fantasy isn't Devil May Cry_ , nor should it be made to in any way resemble that or any other hack-and-slash games. The last great Final Fantasy that Square-Enix produced, was Final Fantasy X. Every game after has been a mark of downward progress for the quality of the main franchise as a whole.
@Jeezes718 Жыл бұрын
Stupid Anon a problem with your argument is that you aren't giving examples. You say 'what they are putting in games is ruining ff', like what? My biggest gripe as of late has been the writing, which has no baring on gameplay. So what is it that's ruining it? Also, what I meant about 'what they want to put into the game' is that as the series continues, graphics improve, and game engines become capable of more and more things gameplay wise, but, as I said turn based gameplay is restrictive, with everything games have been shown to be capable of there is no demand for a gameplay style that literally has everyone waiting their turn and selecting from a menu. The mmo style of 11 and 14 might be a better alternative, but that would reach a limited audience. Your statement that they 'jettison a core concept' fails to take into consideration the harsh truth that gamers being who they are today wouldn't buy a turn based rpg of final fantasy's scale. They made 10 main games and numerous spin off using that particular style. If they continue to do the same thing over and over indefinitely, people will grow tired of the lack of individuality and innovation. Regardless of how Final Fantasy started, Square has to make changes in order to actually sell their product because, at the end of the day, they are still a company. If no one buys their games, they don't make money. If they don't make money, they can't afford to make games. And then, instead of getting something different, you get nothing. In regards to your statement about 'the last great ff game they made' being ffx, I would disagree, ffxiv has been doing quite well, although I imagine your probably one of those people that saysbit doesn't count because it's and mmo, correct? This is not the first ff game to use this system. Just because it does doesn't mean it's becoming Devil may cry, but they still operate noticeably differently. Other ff games that use this sort of gameplay, with the exception of ffxv, have received positive reception from gamers, so your statement of them losing their core players is very much an overexaggeration. The harsh reality is fewer, and fewer games are able to successfully pull off turn based rpg gameplay, and as much as I'd like to see more if for no reason other than nostalgia, that's not happening. But that's the harsh reality. We can either accept it or be mad all the time.

My ideas are mostly story based, but why not lean into her being an actually shitty person or make it more like she's on the fence. Let her do shitty things in game and cuff softly encourages the actions. He could be written so they he comes across wanting her to 'do the right thing' but quietly encouraging her to go nuts. You also forgot to sin that frey's mom, who can open portals at will, didn't offer to save anyone else. She also tossed her baby with a fair amount of force through that portal. Finally, she had to have an idea of what was waiting for frey in our world as an orphan. Not even accounting for knowledge of our world, being an orphan in magic land likely still sucked shit. Give her to a friend in magic land or drop her in new york as an orphan. Honestly, it's just a question how you would like her raised. With a good friend with notes how to open portals or at the mercy of the system here. I dislike the 'toss the kid and hope for the best' stick Worst is naruto How in the ever loving hell did he go 15 F@CKING YEARS without a single person explaining "Your parents were cool, they loved you." is still mind boggling.

3:20 About that. I think the reverse also happened and Star Wars ripped off Square Enix's game, Kingdom Hearts BBS, when making the new trilogy. At least in terms of characters. Kylo Ren is Terra in how he's manipulated by an evil bald man who has clones of himself (Xehnaort/Snoke). They both end up putting on iconic armor and a cape. They even fight their masters when they "fall to darkness", who are BOTH played by Mark Hamill. Rei is Aqua in that she needs to deal with everyone's issues and is generally seen as the most competent. They even fight evil-mirrored reflections of themselves. Aqua did that in KH 0.2 in 2017, Rei did it 2 years later. Even Ventus has a weird correlation with Finn in how they were used as pawns by the bad guys when they were young. And even more so when they both have a rival with a fancy reflective helmet (Vanitas/female Trooper Officer).

Another thing odd about this game is the setup. Frey is basically Ella Balinska, and both are 5'11", well-spoken, young women who are an 8 or an 8.5 in looks. So just by genetics alone, they're already luckier than most people. But then you add in their supposed intelligence and people-skills as well, and they're already doing better than 95% of the population. Her race is even irrelevant, considering Frey lives in New York City, and not West Virginia or something. If they wanted us to relate to the protagonist more, they would've made them a 5'8" overweight unattractive white male, aka "the average gamer," because casting Ella Balinska, a literal 6' model with beauty most people can never obtain, as "a down-on-her-luck lower-class protagonist" is as out-of-touch as casting Chris Evans as a stalker-incel who follows a woman to Europe after one date in "Ghosted." If this was the real world, Frey would be making $2 million a month with a safe-for-work OnlyFans and another $1 million a month on Twitch. This game fails even with setting up its protagonist.

27:47 - sure, I’ll give it a shot at a fair defence: JRPGs have always been tropey nonsense with mad characters. Listen to any megalomaniacal maniac or dictator in Earth’s history give a speech and it’ll reek of the same insanity and ignorance. If an alien was Isekai-ed into our world and suddenly had to experience a different culture and all the degrees of insanity that humankind suffers from, then they’d have to experience just as much weird and cringey nonsense as this. The problem is familiarity. So when a game struggles to introduce you to their world properly, it’s really jarring, uncomfortable and feels unnatural. It’s not the game being bad, as so much other media is guilty of the exact same stuff. The difference is how well they get the consumer to engage with the content and fiction they’re putting forward. Like why is Dungeons & Dragons so popular? It’s a bunch of nerds often dressing up and using made up words in a make believe world. The difference is your involvement if you enjoy it, and how good of a job the DM does in connecting you. Forspoken doesn’t have bad characters or world design. It’s just communicated in such a jarring way, that it feels alien and people can’t take it seriously. I don’t have any defense for that, but I will insist that it’s not a bad game. People are being way too harsh because they don’t want to connect to this world, it’s much funnier to laugh at it and take pleasure in a big studio getting shut down instead.
