Ah Petra.... You are lovely. Nothing beats camping with your canine pal. Their presence makes me feel safe. Yes, you're right that we're the scariest thing out there... But even a hedgehog sniffing outside my tent sounded scary in the middle of the night! My dog can never wait for the tent to go up at the end of a long hike so he can get cosy! I was going to ask how you keep Petra in 'her part' of the tent when the preference will always be to snuggle up next to you and share your bedding😅

Really like these videos as someone who likes to walk the ancient trackways the bit of historical inspiration are great. This reminded me of ten tours preparation with the ATC back in the 80s woefully under-equipped for what I was taking on and getting very cold thanks to a wet sleeping bag, kept my mind going by repeating times tables. The moor also did its worst on us the weather closed in and we see nothing the dead reckoning skills of the RAF regiment guys accompanying us saved us from a second night out. I look at the quality of kit I have now compared to the 20-year-old ATC tent a roll mat and 80s Argos sleeping bag and wonder how I made is off those hills. This is close to TV quality production, thanks.
@outdoorsinspiration92844 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊 Thank you very much indeed. WRT the ATC in the 80s - Tell me about it 😂 It sounds like the ATC were better equipped than the RAF. I did the 55 mile twice while I was at RAF Locking, in this days Locking, Cosford, Halton and St Athen all took part. Our store issued kit consisted of cotton fly F10 tents, smelly old Trangias, service issued sleeping bags and PU coated camouflage waterproofs .... that was 1986 and 87 👍

Once again, so interesting. Your knowledge knows no bounds: Welsh, as well l as local history and nature! Foxtor mire is legendary..... Even the name sends shivers down my spine. It was a lovely night on the Tor, Kate. It’s great little wild camp spot. It feels ‘lofty’, but (I’m sure you know) if you look back from atop Ter Hill, Fox Tor seems nestled very low in the landscape.

@outdoorsinspiration92844 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, it’s a Vaude Taurus Ultralight - it’s a palace for one but probably a bit tight for 2. It’s a very decent tent, there is a tendency for the tail of the tent to ‘flip’ in strong winds - can’t explain it - but I’ve made a simple modification to prevent this 😊

How difficult and how dangerous is it to cross the fox tor mire ? Just starting to discover Dartmoor. Have come across a couple of bogs and had difficulty navigating out of them
@outdoorsinspiration92844 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, there are routes through, but if you’re not sure then go around to be honest. I’ve been out on Fox Tor Mire recording a short audio for local BBC this evening - much of it is dry and the you find a wallowing grey wet bit.

Those bogs can be treacherous, I heard a story once that a couple of shepards found a well-to-do gentleman in one of them up to his neck. They pulled and pulled but couldn't free him. One of them went to fetch a few local farmers to help, but they still couldn't get him out. Eventually they apologised and said they just couldn't help him. He looked up at them and replied, 'Would it help if I took my feet out the stirrups?'

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 I told this joke to a local lass here and she said she had nearly lost her pony in a bog on the flanks of Pumlumon, which is our county top and was famously described by George Burrows as the most dangerous mountain in Wales due to it's deep bogs. Many times I've stopped suddenly because I've heard the sound of a fairly loud stream, but with none in sight, only to realise that the turf I'm standing on is covering it.

@outdoorsinspiration92844 жыл бұрын
That's very true, Steve. I do like it, but like all tents and shelters it needs a bit of 'working out' - With the Anjan there is a ton of space - the Soulo needs to be organised - its a fantastic tent for one person but with a German Shepherd I need to take a moment to sort it out.
@stevesdaysoff27594 жыл бұрын
Yes that's what I was saying. It's a good one man tent but tight with a dog. I have a little Patterdale terrier so it must be hard with Petra.
@outdoorsinspiration92844 жыл бұрын
@@stevesdaysoff2759 I can make it work - she can actually fit in the inside with me believe it or not. She's a good dog, just happy to be there, she gets her head down for the night and stays there until I'm ready in the morning. The Anjan and the Akto both have more room to be fair - but Ineed something for when the weather turns bad in winter for some stormy wild camps - depending on severity, she may not come on those.
