Two points to note: 1) Benazir said she didn't know about Pakistan Nuclear program while it was her Dad who committed to build a nuclear bomb for Pakistan even if Pakistanis had to eat grass. So either BB made the fool out of America or this gentleman was to naive to understand her sarcasm. 2) That distinguished gentleman failed to mention the US administration before Bush senior. They were the one who fed milk to this snake and walk away when their objectives were met. Historically USA has always been supportive of Army govs but whenever democracy returns to Pakistan instead of helping her it imposes economic sanctions.

The US new all along about their nuclear programmer but opted to ignore it.The US's main objective at that time was to undermine india's development by arming pakistan to the hilt. Least one has forgotten the US 7th fleet sailing towards Dacca while the British aircraft carrier was sailing towards Bombay in support of Pakistan against India's liberation of Bangladesh.

The Afghan army was poorly trained and by the end of US involvement in Afghanistan, they weren't being paid. Additionally, he made this claim in 2014, when the Afghan army was successfully carrying out operations however they did so with air, recon, tech & comms support from the US Army. When the US army had to leave they took these facilities with them. Afghan army was simply unwiling (and unable) to fight. Its not exactly a poor assesment considering he said this some 8 years prior to the end of US involvement.

@@adityajoshi1586 40:20 This discussion took place in 2014, and Riedel's reply is in reference to 2015. Way too many factors have changed from 2014 to 2021 when the US literally abandoned everything in a matter of days. The way the US decided to withdraw played a crucial role in what followed - how the Taliban as well as the Afghan State assessed the situation, and acted.

Systematic rape was one of the chief weapons of the atrocity campaign. Any-where from 200,000 to 400,000 women were raped. Susan Brownmiller (1975), who published one of the earliest analyses of the event in her pioneering work on the politics of sexual violence, reported the following: “Rape in Bangladesh had hardly been restricted to beauty. Girls of eight and grandmothers of seventy-fi ve had been sexually assaulted during the nine-month repression. Pakistani soldiers had not only violated Bengali women on the spot; they abducted tens of hundreds and held them by force in their military barracks for nightly use. The women were kept naked to prevent their escape” (p. 82)." (Plight and Fate of Women During and Following, Routledge, Page 49)

Thanks for putting up this talk by Mr. Riedel. While admitting that India never had any desire to invade and annex Pakistan, Mr. Riedel neglected to make it clear to his audience that it is actually Pakistan that has always dreamed of conquering India and completing the "unfinished business" of the Islamization of the Indian subcontinent. During the Cold War, the US connived in Pakistan's nuclear pilferage (before they got to the stage of proliferation). Perhaps the US drank the Pakistani koolaid about a "threat from India", and felt that their own balance-of-power strategy to pin India down in the subcontinent would be better served if Pakistan was nuclear armed. Now the US says they just want out of the area, as if to claim no responsibility for shielding Pakistan from the consequences of its own grandiose and genocidal misadventures. I think there is great potential for cooperation between the US and India, but this cannot materialize so long as the US does not discard the cold warrior and distorted British colonial lens on how to deal with the Indian subcontinent.

Rajender Your information lacks depth and its one sided. Pakistan was developing nuclear weapon and US sort of knew about it but they couldn't do anything about it bcoz Pakistan won a war for the US in Afghanistan by beating the red Army nuclear program and that war went side by side; Bruce Riedel said in one of his speeches that if any war had the most bang for the buck USA spent was Zia Ul Haq's war in Afghanistan against the Soviet union and the events that followed led to the collapse of USSR. Pakistan is the one who brought China and USA together, you may want to read about Henry Kissinger's secret visit to china to meet Mou arranged and facilitated by Pakistan.

At 49:00, the question is asked about what went wrong in Pakistan. It is absurd to exclude the Soviet-Afghan War and the modern Afghanistan War from this list. These events, led by the United States, have had irreparable damage on the country. They displaced peoples, spurred further radicalization, and inflated the military's stronghold, to mention just a few. While most of what is presented here is well-informed, Reidel's omission of these basic truths reveals much about his biases.

Did he admit it was a mistake to attack Afghanistan? Most Afghans didn't even know where the World Trade Center was. Then after clearing Afghanistan of Al-Qaida within one year, what was the point of continuing the war for another 20? Eventually the whole country was handed back to the Taliban, and now all they do is to criticize the Taliban.

The Taliban, as a school of thought, were created before (mid 1970s) the US-Russia proxy war (early 1980s) in a halfwitted attempt to create 'strategic depth' vis a vis India... but the Pakistani textbooks and media will say whatever is preferable to legitimize the all pervasive role of its army in de facto running state affairs since the country's inception in 1974. The Taliban and other Deobandi Jihadi groups were born in what was then called the North West Frontier Province and were utilized against India since the first war over Kashmir. Since independence Pakistan's Army/Government (same thing) has been playing this dangerous game of using unconventional warfare which did not cease even when the country achieved military superiority over its neighbor as a consequence of US support in the 80s (which was subsequently squandered by excessive military spending of incompetent military dictators) and attained nuclear weapons. A country with a chip on its shoulder due to 'unfair' separation which serves as a deeply ingrained victim-narrative that is poisoning the minds of the vast majority of even the civil population, because it serves as a raison d'etre for the Army's leadership role, causing many to call it an 'army with a state' rather than a 'state with an army'

@@satyaprasad9774 The US outsourced everything to Zia-ul-Haq. Saudi was asked to provide the funds and Pakistan made all decisions on the ground. Haq chose the 2 most militant and extremist groups out of the 7 present among the Afghan refugees in FATA (because the other 5 wanted to reinstate the Afghan Shah, who had attempted to do-away with the durand line), to serve a dual purpose. Firstly, he had experience with the Anti-India Lashkars already (Pakistan used since inception in 1947), and secondly he wanted to turn these militias around to target India in Kashmir (which happened as of the late 80s).Moreover, Pakistan was looking to avoid border clashes at the durand line and had a nascent insurgency problem in the 'Pashtunistan' movemen, which both could be solved by sending and paying these same people to fight in Afghanistan. The US wanted a proxy war with deniability, Gen. Haq wanted a Jihad. So, actually US equipment was provided for Pakistans Jihad, not the other way around.

So true. Unbelievable how much rubbish he's talking. "Pakistani Taliban control 40% of Karachi and the largest port". What rubbish. He's brain-washing those poor kids with Anti-Pakistani sentiment because Pakistan is becoming more of an economic threat to the US due to it's massive contracts with China and less dependence on the US. If you look at this from an economic perspective, you see that whenever the US had strong ties with Pakistan, it was because Pakistan was dancing to it's tunes. Now that it isn't, and China is protecting Pakistan, the US wants to consider them as enemies. Such Bastards. And he keeps boasting on the amount of aid given, he doesn't mention that most of that aid was actually the cost that Pakistan itself spent, and this was just compensation

From the last 12 years, Pakistan has learned a lot from its past mistakes, is undoing its mistakes, and on the path of prosperity and development. It does not mean everything is rosy, yes there are challenges, but the direction is right now. The hope and aspiration for a better future are instilled, in everyone. And we have a success story to share with World about our victory against terrorism. Now, one thing which can be fruitful for all in South Asia is good relations between two nuclear states of South Asia. From the last 24 months our new prime minister, who has a track record of serving humanity, has offered many times to its Indian counterpart that let's start dialogs and solve our outstanding issues. As a goodwill gesture, he released the captured Indian pilot, opened the border for religious pilgrims to Sikhs, which even the UN secretary-general has appraised. Unfortunately, the Indian counterpart is not responding positively to these efforts because he has a track record of massacring minorities and has taken the great nation of India to the path of Fascism, following the ideology of RSS which is the killer of Gandhi. I hope our sane Indian friends will make their leadership realize that Pakistan is a reality on their eastern border and it is not going to go anywhere, so it's better to accept it as a reality and start good relationships with it.

The US Pakistan encomium is part of a larger network. China and India are peer competitors, and have gone to war already. As long as US money and arms flow to Pakistan, it fills a bucket that could be filled by China. China's interests converge with Pakistan's more than the US's interests do. The largest issue is nuclear. A nuclear exchange between Pakistan and India would be the greatest human disaster since WWII. Given ecological ramifications, it could be far worse. Terrorism is a blip in comparison, except for one thing. Pakistan's vast, unorganized arsenal is a terrorist gold mine. India has its non-alignment roots. Perhaps there's more. By not aligning with the US, India permits the US to maintain a fiction of not aligning with them. In turn, the US and Pakistan have a bizarre relationship, but a relationship all the same. The most important element of this US - Pakistan relationship is US knowledge of Pakistani nukes. The US gov't, defense, CIA, etc, have no reason to publicize their knowledge. But Riedel's story of Gates informing Bhutto that her country had nukes suggests the US knows some. Whether the US can tell if a Pakistani nuke has been hijacked is another story. But without the US relationship with the Pakistani military, it's hard to see any other way of knowing. To maintain this knowledge the US needs to stay in the dysfunctional relationship. India needs it the most, since the Chinese would replace the US on their doorstep. Just to put a fine point on it, the US turned a blind eye to Pakistan's terror in Bangladesh because they were Nixon's only conduit to China. If Pakistan rolls its nukes into position, all bets are off. The US and India may hesitate, but if they can destroy the nukes with cruise or other missiles, they probably will. For good reason.

The same people created Ind*a too, as both countries came into existence in August 1947, there was no country called Ind*a prior to that time, what there was was the British Ind*an Empire or a landmass called South Asia which was in the form of many states and kingdoms when the British first arrived in the region in Bengal in the early 1700’s, there was no one country, therefore the claim that somebody created Pakistan is nonsensical because it supposes that the British who found the region as many different independent kingdoms, amalgamated or cobbled together the vastly differing and disparate regions of South Asia into the artificially crafted political construct and entity called the British Ind*an Empire should have left South Asia as one “country” or entity constitutionally speaking when they wound up their empire, but the question is why should they have done when there was no country as Ind*a in the past, except may be the odd short lived empire thousands of years ago and also when those same Brits didn’t find the place as ONE. If the accusation is that tge British created Pakistan then the british practically created half the countries in the world including Ind*a when they decolonised their former colonies and the other half of countries were created by the other European colonial powers when they decolonised, almost everybody that wasn’t a colonial or imperial power was a colony of these powers and hence were created, may be except fir Nepal out of the hundreds of countries, lol, anyway nice try, snd yes it was our right to have our own country as native peoples of these lands that make up Pakistan regardless of what the British it the present day ind*ans wanted, after all the jabs belongs to its people, this land called Pakistan sure as hell never belonged to any Gujju, bhaiya, bihari, Bengali, Maratha, Dakhan or Tamil but belonged to and always rightly will to the people of these lands who are the a Sindhis, Baluch, Pakhtuns and Punjabis etc, you nor any Bharat matta type have no claim, it is a matter of self determination and the right of every people to collectively organise themselves as a state, unless of course you are against independence, freedom and sovereignty! @madeehasaeed786

I’d say Malaysia Zindabad and UK Zindabad too because all countries have the right to exist and continue as independent countries. Nobody needs to concern themselves with Pakistan as every country at some point goes through difficult times, we will come through this. The remarkable thing here is that all you could do was focus on the slogan at the end which is basically generic for all countries, you are neither able to show the validity of the initial comment in which it’s mentioned people or whatever who allegedly created Pakistan when the reality is that this country and its land belongs and belonged to the people of these lands, not to any Indian, there is no reason why South Asia should have been left as one entity at the end of the colonial period, it never was one and especially was never a country, if we go by the logic of that original comment then those people or forces who allegedly created Pakistan also created India in August 1947 as it too didn’t exist prior to that as it was also part of the British Indian Empire, not to forget a hundred other countries that came into existence when the European colonial powers including the British all wound down their respective empires after WW2 but for some unfathomable reason the only objection seems to be towards Pakistan coming into existence, then it’s some sort of conspiracy, lol, there is something called self determination you know, nor are you able to prove wrong or refute anything I said in my first comment, so no, won’t be running anywhere. Next time show the concepts of self determination and the fact that these lands belong to us to be wrong, prove that this land belongs to some bhaiya or Bihari or Dakhan and not to the people of Pakistan rather than the tired old propaganda of Pakistan being created by some nefarious forces or being a conspiracy of the British to divide Bharat matta, what a silly argument. Again Pakistan Zindabaad

His views on ISI and Punjab's role in Pakistan are misleading because Zardari Government in Islamabad was not represented by Punjab. He as Baluch President representing Sindh sacrificed his Punjabi Minister from Punjab Yusuf Reza Gillani just to cover up his corruption by disallowing him to write to Swiss courts for opening the case of corruption against AAZ indulging in contempt of court and consequently disqualifying to remain Prime Minister. The federal government does not exercise any authority on provinces and the only unifying factor is a federally centralized highly disciplined armed forces of Pakistan strictly controlling both foreign affairs and nuclear button because the both the ruling families of PML-N and PPP-ZG are morally vulnerable state security risk due to globally reported cases of corruption in and outside Pakistan. He is so ignorant that he doesn't know that Benazir, a Sindhi and daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, was twice elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. Bruce Riedel's and CIA's problem is that ISI and present Army Chief have drawn a State Security Line which they do not allow CIA and Americans to cross with the help of their ruling facilitators in Pakistan. After failing in their attempts now they are using Modi to violate Pakistan's borders provoking Pakistan to engage in traditional war. Pak Army has cautiously responded to that challenge by behaving responsibly and exposing India. There are other factors also which can not be discussed here which Bruce has intentionally and dishonestly not mentioned in his speech.

+Moe Kazi are you kidding? Bruce was & is still one of the biggest supporters of the Pakistani pople,. He highlights problems that are genuine & for the betterment of the Pakistani people. Its a fact the military of Pakistan & large part the political parties (upper elite) have made the country where it is today. Being a smaller country , with more natural resources than india per hectare of land, it should have been the richer with higher standard of living & eduction than india too. It had Lahore, the then knowledge capital of the old world. More tolerant (though being predominantly Muslim) of all races & faith; with the most learned people in the world in the city, with culture that was far more vibrant than any other Asian country. BUT look where its reached, mostly due to the military dictatorship, particularly during the time of Zia-ul haq, his encouragement & bringing of the Saudi sponsored wahabi Muslim thoughts & sects just shattered the cultural fabric of Pakistan. The original Sufi Islam which was the root of faith in Pakistan was much more vibrant & more beautiful islamic faith. which was the reason a Muslim dynasty like the mughuls ruled the sub-continent with such peace & ease. for ages. There are other factors too, (cant type it all here) but Pakistan should go back to its roots , & it will be a marque democratic county, envy of the Asian region. So stop saying he is against Pakistan just because u don't want to hear criticism, When the people of Pakistan can accept there drawbacks in their country, nothing will be able to stop them, from rising & making this country to its former glory.

Fortunately the Indian Air Force attack was a dud causing damage to only a few trees. Pakistan carried out a proportionate response by striking near Indian installations.

Anubhav Mishra If you read the entire sentence, you would've seen that I implied that, because the US is moving away from it's political alliance with Pakistan that it previously had, and China is becoming a staunch ally with Pakistan, he's talking rubbish and demonising Pakistan. I didn't imply that Pakistan was an economic threat to the US in terms of GDP value. Read my statement again if you don't understand my point. And "Hats off to your outlook and knowledge".. I won't take as a sarcastic insult because I have a Bachelors in Commerce and extensive knowledge of economics.

Moe Kazi My point was that Pakistan was never a lucrative investment destination for US. As far as I am aware of, Pakistan used to get aids from US (free money) and not investment. So even if US moves away from Pakistan, it is not a return on investment that US is going to get but rather some years down the line, it might just have to do away with aids saving itself some billions which it has unnecessarily donated. I won't consider it an unnecessary donation though as US got a free pass to have military operations inside your country, some of which might have killed terrorists and others which might have killed innocents. Basically US, by its aids, bought military operational freedom inside Pakistan's territory for which it won't be held accountable to anyone. Considering that US had substantial infrastructure and power investment in pakistan out of which it would have gained huge returns, your opinion might hold true. But I doubt how much has US actually invested (not aided) in Pakistan.

Anubhav Mishra You right when you say that the US didn't invest that much in Pak, however, of the little that they did invest, it was a lucrative, as the US is still receiving profits from the infrastructure, energy etc projects that it set up. And with the aid given to Pakistan, the US did get a free pass to have military operations inside Pak, hence I don't see how you think of any of the money given, either in investment or aid was a waste. But nevertheless, seems like we're on a similar page on these issues, but this wasn't my focus in my initial comment.. but anyway..

Pak means pure, and stan means place. PAK for Punjab, etc is a concocted story to justify claim on Kashmir. Now our experts not getting this simple fact is shocking. Pakistan is a nice name and it is not nice to make fun of it. BTW I am not a Pakistani but I do have deep respect for Jinha. In 1920 he was very secular and would been Prime Minister of undivided India if British were to give India independence as they had promised at the beginning if world War I. His travel from secularism to religious zealot is mysterious.
