Fantastic video, me being a long time drywaller my self. your method is correct and that patch should last for many years. The only thing I will add is this tip I learned years ago. after your final coat of mud it dried, I use a flashlight or a droplight angled while you do the final sand, the light enhances any imperfections on the surface. The light will show you exactly what needs to be sanded for a perfectly sooth surface everytime

If you size your fix right and the joints are very small you can get away without using the tape. Also, when putting in screws make small pilot holes first, will help you get the screws in easier and ensure they go in straight. Otherwise, decent fix 👍🏻

Sounds like you've done a lot of drywall Bernie. Blowout patches are great if you have a lot of experience but I find they are more likely to fail if you are new to drywall. You have to get your mud just right and that takes experience. I like the tape method because it's crack resistant, strong and reliable. I don't want anyone to have to redo their work. Thanks for taking sharing your thoughts and tips!

I just want to say that I LOVE that you’re a feminine woman who not only does her own repairs, but also actually knows what she’s doing! It is very encouraging. I do so much of my own repairs, from car repairs to electronic and home repairs. Anytime a guy hears I’m going to repair something it’s always the same panicked reaction that I’m going to mess it up. Why? Because I’m a female? I know more about home and car repairs than every man I’ve ever dated and its solely because I choose to seek out the knowledge to perform each task. Thanks to people like you, there is very little one cannot learn to diy via Google and KZbin.

Soooo…we’ve had a hole in the ceiling of our study for probably about 10 years due to a leak in our master bathroom shower. My hubby works long hours during the week, he’s worn out on the weekends (but not gonna lie, he could have found the time to repair it in 10 years!). We have popcorn ceilings in the room that I’m going to remove when I repair that hole as a surprise for him. What order should I make those repairs in? Should I remove the popcorn, repair the hole, then paint the ceiling? Is there a better order to do the repair? I’m 60, retired, and think I can do everything! Is this going to kick my rear end? I’m actually pretty competent…

Don’t recommend sanding between coats, just use trowel to knock off peaks. If you do choose to sand then after brushing dust off, use a damp sponge to remove dust or next coat adhesion will be compromised. To get a good paint finish you also need to build up some roller texture over repair area to match surrounding paint roller texture.

I use a good quality primer on the patch and feather it out. Then I paint the patch only and lightly feather the paint with a roller into the existing paint. It should blend well if you have the same ceiling paint to cover the patch. I spot prime and paint often without issue. If your ceiling was painted a long time ago it may show faintly. Awesome, *highly* detailed video. I haven't used this technique before because I've only ever Spackled small, dime-sized holes before. When I did those, I'd sand the Spackle down to where I'd be causing slight paint abrasion then I'd touch up the paint to cover. I noticed that if I left more Spackle than that on the wall, it never looked right (it would look like a mound of Spackled on the wall). With the technique in the video, if I sanded down to where paint abrasion started, wouldn't that also be damaging the drywall tape? Does the larger surface area of the patch job allow for more dispersion of the drywall compound, to where it wouldn't look like a mound of compound on the ceiling. Hopefully this long question makes sense? Thanks!

It's a good result in the end, but WAY TOO MUCH WORK for what started out as a 5cm diameter hole . . . If instead you'd used a 5cm round gyprock (drywall) piece to patch the hole, a small piece of timber or drywall above it, you could have done the repair in a quarter of the time. Time saved = time or money earnt.

You can fix it with no tape and it won't be proud of the ceiling. It's called "back-blocking" Insert a piece of gyprock through the hole which has a long screw through it use plaster to butter up both pieces and the back of the ceiling around the hole ...use the screw to pull your patch towards the back of the ceiling and bring it all together on the plaster ...let it dry..... Push the screw up into the ceiling cavity then plaster up the remaining 10mm void left on the front of the patch that you can see Never crack no tape needed

Instead of making more work for yourself by cutting out a hole in the ceiling that's already there just use a Dremel on a new piece of drywall. If you don't have one of those still make your square cut and just cut off the corners. Then a little fine-tuning and you're good to go.

This is excellent, straightforward and easy to understand. I appreciated all the comments and will read through all of them before I attempt this project. We took down a ceiling fan (bigger hole) and added a can light....what do you recommend to add the dry with a smaller circle - two halves or one square with the round hole for the can light?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 2 ай бұрын
You could stencil out a circle on drywall and patch that if you want. I did square in the video because it’s easy to tape it. Both are good.

Hi, Thank you for this video! It's the best one I have found. I have a 2 inch hole in my ceiling. I tried to used putty and a patch but gravity took over and it was a big Fail. I assume it was because I didn't secure it with the wood. I don't have a drill so I'll have to buy one. Should I just go to lowes for the wood and drill? What is that tape called please? I will show lowes this video. I am very handy once I know what I'm doing.

Good on you for learning how to do this! We learn the most from our mistakes, I did too. You can borrow a drill or buy one including lumber. The tape and tools used are linked in the description. The more you patch the better you get. Thanks Melanie

Just use a bigger piece of drywall instead of wood to secure. Bond the fitted piece to the bigger piece and drop it in from the attic and use bond to secure against the existing drywall board.

@@DaruDhillon I think I didn't patch the drywall as good as I wanted to. I only cut out and patch an area where I poked a hole into but not matching rest of sagging ceiling from previous water damage which caused cieling to drop a bit .because I didn't want to Dig myself deeper in the rabbit hole. Now, it looks uneven. I hope when the mud is dry and go over again with joint compound , trying to make it look flushing as possible and perhaps when I paint the ceiling white, it would blend in a bit. What you think?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 2 жыл бұрын
@@fh3486 have patience with your work and give yourself time to get the result you need. Patching takes three coats of mud with sanding in between to get it to even up. If your ceiling is uneven use your hand to feel your ceiling to fill any low spots with mud and sand down any areas that are higher. Even professionals use three coats of mud with sanding because it takes time to get it to blend. Have patience with yourself. My first patch wasn’t the best, but I got better and you can too.

Hi. Nice work 👏 , but l wonder why you do one job twice ? To avoid cracks, you put mesh tape on top of existing ceiling and because of that you need to add bit more and to loose the bump you do bigger area after. Is simple to avoid add more. What you have to do before you add mesh on that existing ceiling ( not the middle part ) is mark about 3cm around , cut around with knife about 2mm deep and remove 2mm of existing plaster, so when you put mesh - will be at same level with new square plasterbord . Then you put the filler only one time and is flat . Do you understand ?

Hi Mario. Here it’s customary to do 3 coats on drywall for an ultra smooth finish. Thanks for the tips.
@creativemario101
@creativemario101 Жыл бұрын
@@DaruDhillon try the tip and customary will become one coat. After cut around use chisel to remove the 2mm plaster around, make it wet or pva. The all point is flat ceiling. To achieve that - nothing at all should be add on existing ceiling. Try. Make it video as new method and see . People will like it. 👋😁
