I think this song is about someone who's not used to having a relationship that lasts in a stable way, and is worried about making it last longer. After they met his "heart becomes a metronome", he's stable in his feelings of love in this relationship, where before his feelings for others would change randomly. He's clearly unsure of what turns her on, so it's a fairly new relationship, she's maybe difficult to get real answers from because she finds it hard to trust. "Say before your lips become predictable" and "magic isn't magic if it lasts, but you change me from a solid, to a liquid, to a gas" indicate that he's had relationships with people he's considered the worlds best kisser before, and the passion has fizzled out - "maybe love is orbital decay" - but by saying "BUT you change me from a solid..." that means this relationship is still going unexpectedly well. It's a v good song!
