I don't understand why a burned area without active fire is "closed" unless the trail is obliterated by erosion? I once hiked a "closed road" due to landslide in Zion National Park with Ranger caveat that if it looked too dangerous I was to return and report the condition. There huge fissures in the road surface and massive strips of subsidence for about a mile and a dicey part where the roadway was completely absent and a 50%-60% grade peppered with loose rocks and mostly loose dusty talus was the going for about 200 yards. I spent about 30 minutes kicking footholds and kept going.

Take it easy. I know what happens from Instagram, but I'll say it anyway, take it easy and don't burn yourself out/injure yourself. Lots of late snow in the Sierra means that late May is pushing it for hiking the Sierra. I really appreciate and admire your dedication to hiking the PCT not yellow blazing around chunks of open trail.

I think it is really great that you get to hike alone at times, but also have a few people to meet up with as well. It is good to know that if some one were to start this hike alone, they would meet a few companions along the way. Beautiful video, thank you!

@5:57 Thanks for this bit, especially coming back down the mountain (to live another day for hiking.) That one bit, which I watched the night before hiking in Rocky Mountain National on a trail I'd never been on, kept me from ascending a not-safe peak by myself and turned back before something could go wrong. (That being a broken leg/ankle/knee/hip from post-holing in the fast-melting snow.) "If Darwin was smart, you will be too." Suffice to say, thanks for the wisdom and I'll chase that vista and goal for the next time. It's not going anywhere.

I always dream of hiking these trails one day but my life in the military has kept me from doing anything quite as advance and long as your trips. Often thought going with a team of 4 would be great. Each person would have a talent to offer such as 1 person an EMS, another is a Trail Cook, another is an LMT and the last one perhaps a psychologist or counselor.

Love to hear your comparisons between the PCT AT and CDT. Observations etc. So glad you got to see and stay at White Water. One of my favorite places in the Coachella Valley area. I do adore it there. And so easy to get to the PCT for day and section hikes too.

I've had the same umbrella issue! Big wind, and snap. The Montbell sun umbrella does much better in wind, and isn't so rigid. Won't snap and break! If you're looking to replace, its about 2oz lighter too ;)

G’day, Darwin. Greetings from Australia! I’m new to your channel having only just discovered the crazy concept of thru-hiking. (Up until now, I thought a 10 day hike was epic!!!) I must tell you that the difference in your persona lately from your earlier videos is huge. Your earlier post-trail depression was evident in your eyes, and it is truly wonderful to see how much happier you are now with the life decisions you have made. I applaud your courage and am so pleased for you. In one of your previous videos, you talk of caring for your feet and trying to dry them out each night. (I think you have stopped taking a light pair of camp shoes to change into at night.) Admittedly my idea of a long hike is considerably different from yours, but I still like to minimise load weight, so I use the EVA (a very lightweight polymer) Birkenstocks when I finish my day’s hiking and want to rest my feet. My US size 10 pair weigh 9.8 oz, are completely waterproof (I actually use them in the ocean during post long run recovery wading to protect myself from stingrays), and, being Birkenstocks, have very good arch support which is important to me with my susceptibility to plantar fasciitis. Also, because they have belt-like buckles, you can easily attach them to the outside of your pack. Perhaps best of all, they’re much cheaper than the normal heavy cork and leather Birkenstocks. I don’t know if this is useful to you, but just wanted to let you know. Perhaps during her next Trail Angel role, Snuggles could arrange to get you a pair...!!!Anyway, keep on charging through those miles. All of you thru-hikers are amazing! Stay happy!!

love your videos I would love to oneday be able to do some hikes like this the AT or PCT. I haven't even had time to get out at all this year. I have however been able to do plenty of day hikes and I also purchased a fifth wheel so I can at least go new places and do different day hikes. my dream one day is to live in a truck camper and backpack all the time. my current girlfriend isn't into the minimalist lifestyle or roughing it (hens the fifth wheel and day hikes) but I love her so compromises are made so I can't complain I do what I can, but thank you for your videos just watching them at my desk at work helps pass the time when nothing is going on and lets me live vicariously through you lol

I seem to recall in a video from way back where you said you packed your gear by stuffing rather than rolling to prevent creasing your tent in the same spot repeatedly and causing stress and wear in the same spot. Don't feel too bad about the burns...It used to be nature's way of rejuvenating the forest and the low ground growth will feed alot of animals...It may look rough now but go back into an area a few years after a burn and everything will be very green and fertile...Maybe not so much in the desert but I would guess it would apply there to a degree..

I tried explaining thaat to some tourists by Reds Meadow in Yosemite, but they were just so sad about all of the trees that were gone. There were grasses, flowers, and brush everywhere with young trees starting to rise above it. I guarantee you that the birds and insects were enjoying all of the food provided by the grasses with the trees gone.
