Rather than revealing his alibi, and hurt his best friend, he and the best friends wife kept silent about the fact they were sleeping together when the crime occurred. Heard this song for years around the campfire. I’ve noticed men favour it. The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia is another song with a twist.Originally recorded by Vicky Lawrence from The Carol Burnett Show.

Don, this song is amazing! It was actually written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkins in 1959. It's said that some of the inspiration for the song is the mysterious woman who, wearing a black veil, repeatedly visited the grave of Rudolph Valentino on the anniversary of his death in addition to the murder of a New Jersey priest. Marijohn actually plays the piano in the original recording that Lefty Frizell did!

The person who was killed is not important to the story. The singer was mistaken for the killer and is charged with the murder. He was with his best friend’s wife. He remains silent about where he was rather than exposing his lover. His secret was where he was when the murder occurred. She stood in the crowd and let them hang him rather than speak up and save him, thereby saving her marriage. Now she walks the hills in a long black vail mourning his death, and hopefully regretting not speaking up.

It's only about the third or fourth one that was blocked in the seven months that I've been doing videos, and I was so bummed I can't even tell you. I appreciate the dissection of the songs that you do, but when it comes to Daryle Singletary…it’s his voice. Every true Traditional Country music fan puts Daryle on the same level as George Jones and Keith Whitley. Daryle could sing the back of a cereal box and make people stop and listen because of his exceptional vocal control. This song, along with many of his others, is great, but his vocals are 110% why he drew the crowds that he did.

You might infer that it was his best friend who was killed but there is nothing in the song that says this. It just says, "a man was killed" and witnesses said the man who ran from the scene of the murder looked a lot like him and he was having an affair with his best friend's wife so he couldn't provide an alibi, so he was executed. She was unable to grieve at his execution because she couldn't let anyone know she was involved with him but late at night she puts on a long black veil to conceal her identity and visits his grave to "cry o'er his bones". I like Daryle but I much prefer the version of this that was done by Lefty Frizzell.

Yet another powerful, poignant story song. Frizell's voice has more gravel in it, reflecting the tough situation the narrator was in. One quibble tho: in the refrain, the "dead singer" laments "... nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me." Well, the wife of his best friend is still alive and was party to the transgression. Sorry to hear that Mr. Singletary left this "mortal coil" at a young age.
