Das Boot is one of the greatest war movies ever made. It's not about how many ships they sink or people they kill (watch the scene with the burning tanker and the crew are distraught that the Royal navy isn't rescuing the survivors nor can they do anything for them themselves) but it's ultimately about survival and it's a great tribute to the U-boat men. Let's face it quite a few of them never returned from patrol. The cast were all perfect in their roles and the characters were wonderful in every way. Jurgen Prochnow was incredible and if I was a U-boat man then I'd want him as my commander.
@Koshiro2k32 жыл бұрын
In a way it is incidental because the movie was based on Buchheim's book: But for a movie it is just genius to have the rookie war correspondent character aboard since it provides an organic opportunity to explain concepts (e.g. wolf pack tactics) to that character and thus, the audience.
@Ah012 жыл бұрын

The best submarine drama ever made because it's entirely believable, based on how it actually was for U-boat men and for that matter other submariners too. I love the music too. They may be enemy submariners but you're actually rooting for them to survive and I think that's because of the wonderful cast, the characters are brilliant. Jurgen Prochnow's Captain is undoubtedly one of the greatest movie characters; that's how most U-boat commanders were - they weren't bloodthirsty pirates but human beings who cared.

Today's actors guilds would never allow a movie made like this. These actors here were standing on big models moved around by hydraulics, and the water isn't production assistants throwing buckets of water, it's a machine capable of throwing a whole ton of water at once. There were several accidents during filming, for example one time an actor got washed off the thing - because some safety harness snapped. The movie is a good candidate for a "production hell" kind of documentary. 😂
