I love this scene. Being on such a dangerous machine in such a hostile environment, these giant metal beasts cutting through each wave. And then, through the spray and fog... Another U-boat.. another group of men doing the exact same thing as you, friends in the same boat but not.

I like it in the fact that it highlights that a naval crew during a major war has more dangers than being discovered or killed by the enemy. You have boredom that can drive one mad. You could still sink by natural disasters, or be swept off of your boat. Even the strongest swimmer would never survive that.

It was the exact opposite. The captain got filled with a felling of dread and uncertainty, as with only 12 u-boats on patrol they should NEVER see another U-boat. That means something has gone terribly wrong and somone has made a huge mistake. As well it allows for the English to get through more easily, meaning th at they are failing at their very mission.

It is about submarine crews who were sent into dangerous missions by the High Command regardless of their dire situation.. even there was a criticism on Nazi in this film. These crews just did their job, but not for the Nazi cause.. even they mocked a Nazi radio speech and switched into a British song broadcast. Troy too is an anti war story. Remember that two nations basically at war & civilian life perished just because a prince carelessly abducted away the other kingdom's princess.. thus, it was used as justification for the other kingdom to declare war at his kingdom.

I do understand why many see Das Boot as strictly an anti-war movie but the way I see it the film is simply honest about what it means to fight in a war. It clearly displays the terror and hardship but it also isn't silent about things like the courage, energetic excitement of battle and comradship. Also the criticism of big shot politicians who are running their mouths while the crew do the hard and dangerous work or the military leadership whose errors are putting their lives at risk wasn't really against the "Nazi cause". The war clearly wasn't a black/white conflict and it's naive to see it through such a modern lens. So even if it was anti-Nazi (which it isn't) that doesn't equal anti-war. Troy on the other hand is an adventure film based on an ancient epic. I'm pretty sure you won't find a single movie magazine that classifies it as a war or anti-war film. ;)

I hate the fact that even a century later, we are still demonizing one side of this terrible conflict, when they were just... people. Just people, doing their job and their duty, most of them following their dreams. Many, sadly, being manipulated or even pressured, but still, many heroes, leaders, and visionaries. Overall, however, most of them were just regular people like you and me, who never committed any attrocities. We need more movies like Das Boot, in my opinion. That's usually the third act, the low point, when a crew member is killed and everyone is depressed, before they find new confidence in the fourth act and overcome adversity in the fifth act. Which is exactly what happens in this movie. Anti-war movies show the suffering of the other side; the victims of your attacks. And yes, I know that there is that scene when U96 sinks a ship hours after the first attack and realise that there were still seaman aboard. But we don't really see those poor souls, just shadows through binoculars, and we hear the KaLeu complain about it. Sorry, but nothing about this movie is anti-war. This movie is what soldiers watch in the barracks in the evening, just like Full Metal Jacket. _

And in Full Metal Jacket, we do not get to see the suffering of the Vietnamese people at all, except in that very last scene when the sniper turns out to be that very young girl. Again: There is a reason why soldiers watch those movies in their barracks. They are war movies. They are darker than the war movies from the 60s and 70s, but war movies nonetheless. _

Useless wishful thinking. It is just as saying that if Germany had 100k tanks in 1940 they would have won the war. Even if Germany decided to completely abandon the idea of building their surface fleet they it is doubtful if they could be able to build 500 UBoots until 1940. And even if they managed to achieve that, they would still lose a land war to the Soviets. Let alone the fact that the germans would not be able to operate this many UBoots in 1940 due to insufficient amount of trained crews. It should also be noted that in only two months of the war the german navy and luftwaffe were able to sink more merchant ships than the UK produced in this same month. Meaning that Germany never even came remotely close to winning the battle of the Atlantic. When US joined the war their new required goal of merchant ships to sink was unachievable. Allies would still be able to counter UBoots (seeing how they would not need to build a surface fleet to challenge the german fleet) and could concentrate on escort ships they were badly lacking. Either way in 1943 again the allies would be sinking more UBoots than germans would be sinking merchant ships, so Germany would lose the way anyway :)
