Via a very German composer Schumann a Middle Eastern metaphysical spirit forms myth(“ the Peri “) is the central character in this work. All from a part of a large poem ( “Lalla Rookh”) by a famous Irish poet (Thomas Moore) that was itself inspired by exotic, colourful tales taken from Persian mythology, “Das Paradies und die Peri” was created in the backdrop of the mid 19th-century craze for all thing “Oriental” in Germany. This work is bizarre, less of an oratorio but more like a “fantasia opera”. Some of the music is r rather romantic, rambling, ecstatic, sepharic and rather courtly. It was a huge hit all through the composers lifetime played everywhere in Europe. Now it is a rare thing. It is a great backdrop soundtrack to a summer outside classical garden party especially early evening. The music filling the warm air to great effect. A magical work.
