As German and Wagner fan for 35 years I enjoy this version much. Alas, German Opera houses mostly have ugly and depressing stagings. I love that China made such a vivid and enjoyable to watch production. Most singers have also a quite good diction, and as a German currently learning Mandarin, I have all the respect for any non native trying to sing German. Not all singers get is equally well, but many quite good. Also good voices. I enjoy watching this Rheingold time and again. :)

After WWII, Wagner's grandson, Wieland, in an attempt to free his grandfather's work from the appropriation it had suffered by the Nazis, stopped using the traditional stagings, going heavily symbolic, illuminating Wagner's acknowledged sub-text(s). There were about 70 years of traditional stagings before the war, and now we have had 70 years of Regietheater. I, for one, think we are ready to go back to the traditional/faithful stagings. Wagner abhorred totalitarianism, and militarism. He fearfully predicted future wars of mass annihilation. The world cannot allow Nazi seizure of some of the greatest music ever composed.
@artguy04085 жыл бұрын
Regietheater is not just about denazificstion. It's the German understanding of theatre as a form of art that always has to be connected with our time. And also for me this is the true form of art. The traditional productions look nicer but that's it.

@Anon Inconnu I agree. Contrary to popular belief this generation isn't interested in the modern stuff. With all the obsession over the years with movies like Lord of the Rings andHarry Potter people are obsessed with period sets. Yes people are ready for tradition again.

If Wagner saw this Produktion he would have freaked out about the really Bad Bad Bad german. I am shocked how many people obviously look more at staging and dress. I dont like modern Interpretation as lately in Bayreuth. But dont you hear that they dont get the character of the music? And they dont even try to speak the words in german. Its nuisance german and almost every line has mistake. To my german ear and knowing the Text it is so sad to hear. And there are really good nongerman Wagner Singers! Look at Fura les Baus Valencia Rheingold. Hear matti Salminen (Fasolt) and Juha Uusitalo (Wotan) sing so wonderful and every german word is correct it is important as Wagner regarded himself as Poet too, and put much effort in the Sound of the words to Match the Orchestra.

gillan5 Yes, as a matter of fact we do. Wagner happened to not be an idiot and left stage instructions in his libretto. I’d hope that if you’re not smart enough to realize this that you are at least smart enough to go and read the libretto for us if for no other reason than to spare us postmodern revisionism. Acknowledge when authorial intent is being respected and when it isn’t; if you’re going to violate that authorial intent at least have the honesty to stand by your disregard for what Wagner wanted.
@Edwards-Videos4 жыл бұрын
@@themajor2072 I have seen productions where the director hasn't even read the libretto. For example, the Valkyries all showing up during Wotan's Farewell despite Wotan clearly stating in the libretto that they are not supposed to return or they would share Brunnhilde's fate.
@themajor20724 жыл бұрын
@@Edwards-Videos In all honesty libretto violation has been pretty par for the course. I myself consider any explicit violation of the libretto, which includes details of the scene (or, at least, the details that Wagner explicitly mentions in the libretto), to fall into this category. Of course, once you account for the scenery and costumes, basically every production of the 21st century does this. With Wagner it is particularly bad, I speculate it's because Wagner is inherently a lot, for lack of a better word, "smarter" than most opera. I mean that in the sense that Wagner took so much meticulous care in every aspect of his works and he loaded so much meaning into everything he did that Parsifal or Meistersinger are inevitably a far more complicated subject of discussion when compared to, say, Offenbach or Donizetti. Consequently, a theatre director who went to college and wants everyone to know it will take every possible opportunity to provide a 21st century perspective on the rather old hat sensibilities of opera. This might mean removing Lohengrin from any semblance of Germany to "recontextualize" the meanings of certain dramatic themes (the forbidden question for instance), or it could mean creating a production such that it inherently challenges Wagner's aesthetic and his perspective on the world (there is no better example than the most recent Meistersinger to come out of Bayreuth). To these directors, nothing is sacred, and so they will profit on a production of "Wagner" that Wagner himself would have absolutely never have wanted. It's not about the transgressions, or any deeper discussion on "Death of the Author"; my problem is that they will sell the production to the public as "Wagner's Der Ring Des Nibelungen" as though they were merely faithful re-interpreters instead of uncreative hacks who find success not in their own work but by selling their bootleg reinterpretation of someone else's work as the genuine article.
@paulhoffmann34053 жыл бұрын
@@themajor2072 Well Wagner diverged from his own libretto for his staging of the "Ring"... and was dissatisfied by his own staging. He wanted to reduce the stage design and the effects, saying he wanted to create an "invisible theatre". Sounds pretty modern to me.

Bravo... Europe and the States have to learn. For the last 30 years only Robert Lepage Met's production can rival with this. Then when you listen to Parsifal, you'll freak out.
China has a centuries old tradition of their own opera. It's nothing new to them. Watch their facial expressions, it is a carefully choreographed part of Chinese opera and they are using it in this, also the way they stand in poses, a hallmark in Chinese opera. This production is fabulous. Excellent Wagner with a woman conductor.and a great cast. Probably all veterans of The Beijing Opera.
@Delinae5 жыл бұрын
Chinese and Western opera are completely different kind of theatre, and no professional performers never specialize in both. Chinese opera (Beijing opera is just one regional version) uses different vocalizations and also involves different linguistic study. It's like different embrouchure for different instruments. Also the poses and gestures in Chinese operas are highly coded, to make up for the lack of set designing and special effects (eg certain hand gestures mean it's raining). Frankly as a Chinese person it weirds me out sometimes to see Chinese performers in Western opera because the stage gestures and expressions are so dramatic and irl Chinese people are mostly pretty reserved lol.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. After suffering through all the available video versions of The Ring with ludicrous staging, this staging (despite being clearly Chinese) was such a relief. The orchestra and singing were not the best available IMHO but certainly good enough to enjoy. Not knowing German, but having watched many productions with English subtitles, I know what is going on when, so I don't care if this cast's German is ideal or even good, it sounds like German to me. I would like to see the entire Ring from this group. My ideal versions of The Ring are concert ones without distracting staging focused on the music, especially Barenboim's 2013 Proms and Grgich's Verbier Festival Valkyrie.

The curtain calls were beautifully handled and choreographed. I was wonderful seeing the singers applauding for each other. It seems like all involved functioned like a family. I hope you they are planning on a complete cycle.

I can't top the superlatives above and below (while I agree with you all!). So let me just say that after watching this delicious production I was left GLOWING with happiness, and hoping for more Wagner from the same company. Many, many thanks Ye Chen for putting this up.

Thank you so much for this production. It has quite stunning visual effects, excellent singing and very good orchestral performances. The story is told as written, but I think with less silly gimmicks than the Met's old production. Quite good use of vertical space. My only quibble would be some of the direction but it's very minor. Bravo.

Gran puesta en escena, con discreto estilo oriental que enmarca bien el digno reparto de cantantes y orquesta muy bien dirigidos por su directora. Gracias por compartir tan loable trabajo.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful production. A very good cast from top to bottom. I would love to see this Wotan in Die Walkure. The diction must be very challenging but the singing was superb. I personally don't care for the comparisons to Europe and America, it does little justice to the unique staging and use of stage done here. It's a different fresh approach to anything I've seen before. Excellent use of video.

I agree the German diction is indeed a challenge, especially for the Chinese singers. The singers attempt at proper German diction is good, not great. I have a problem with the singers themselves. The voices don't quite have the visceral quality required to perform Wagner as the Germans do. I guess I've been spoiled by the performances at Bayreuth. I have to admit the Chinese singers are good!

Proof, if proof were needed, that Wagner's music speaks to us all.
