Part 3 is pretty much wheels, wheels, wheels and then some more wheels.. I also do some work on a few other bits around the back end, with a total change to the build sequence to ease the process. If you would like to contribute to the channel.. please look here.. / nigelsmodellingbench

I used a medium grit sanding drum mounted in a battery-powered Dremel tool to sand the inside circumference of those tires. Five complete rotations did the trick. I found it to be much faster than the sandpaper method.

Re mold draft angles…the out side diameter or external geometries require about half the draft compared to the inside. This is because as the plastic shrinks as it cools it naturally separates from the cavity but tightens around inside geometries of the mold. Not important, I know.

I commented about not being able to paint the tires separately on your first video but after hearing you mention it here I checked my references and you are right- the rubber actually has a slight ridge to it. The Ryton Sturmgeschutz book has some crystal clear photos of a museum restoration and some of the sharper period photos appear to show the same thing.

I lived next to the army base for a while, I can confirm soldiers spend like 90% of their time washing and polishing their tanks. I find tanks "caked in mud" highly unrealistic :)

That may be the case today, but i should imagine in WW2 there was no time for cleaning?

@@NigelsModellingBench I have the feeling that even during WW2 tanks spend most of their lifetime parked on some field in front of the factory or on the ship/train than in actual combat mud. Their survival rate was like what, few weeks? :)
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
I guess you could be right? Though I think in Russia they certainly did get caked? I certainly won't be caking this in Mud. I think I mentioned in the video, something that annoys me intensely is when modellers cake their tanks in mud but give no consideration to the fact that suspension moves and wheels turn.

Another great video Nigel. I do think you do go overboard with checking gaps lol. I didn't do much gap filling on mine. As far as painting goes. I am not the typical armour modeller that builds it all, then paints. EG I painted the tyres Rubber Black before fitting to painted wheels. Andy from Andys Hobby HQ, fully build his before painting. I would ask him "how do you paint all the fiddly bits etc?". I do a lot of painting as I go. I followed the instructions when building up the back end. Didn't have any problems with those idler wheel adjusters. I did paint and rust up my exhausts, painted most of the lower hull up. Then fitted the exhausts. I have updated my Scalemates project today with my build. I have just finished doing the radios and internal parts. The instructions for the Mini Art Stug kit say to paint the radios Black. But I did some research, and most of them were Grey, not Black, so I painted mine in German Grey. I have used artistic license with painting details on the radios. With White panels and Black dials & knobs. I could not find pictures of radios that looked exactly like the ones in the kit. I also built up the fenders. I have left off most of the tools for now. The main casemate has been done on mine. But not glued to the lower hull yet. Not done any weathering to the internals yet. Will leave that for later. Just look up me on Scalemates. Looking forward to the next one Nigel.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
I saw a reference that showed the radios as a grey green colour? Without wishing to be rude Andrew, If I needed advice on a modelling related subject, I wouldn't ask Andy lol. Modellers do things "their way", and my way is by no means the only way, having said that, a guy commented that he followed the instructions and couldn't get the PE to fit? The idlers were only left off so I didn't damage them when I was working on the rear end. I think this post will probably get deleted as you have an external link in it.. YT don't like links.

@@NigelsModellingBench Yeah, if you Google German ww2 tank radios, loads come up. Some are a green colour, some are grey, some are black. I've seen pics of the double radio, where 1 side was green and other was black. I bet eventually Eduard will bring out colour PE ones. But I ain't going to wait lol. Oh and I wasn't offering Andy up to give you advice lol. I just said he built his fully before painting any of it. I have posted comments with links before without problems. But I will edit it, and remove the link. I didn't have problems fitting my PE grill though.
